The problem with Epcot's "updating" in the late '90s is that it also focused too much on the present and not enough on the timelessly futuristic feel of postmodern architecture.
The outdated '80s Communicore was replaced by the '90s Innoventions; the '80s color schemes were replaced by '90s earthtones; the retro-cool EPCOT Center logo was replaced by a bland, sans-serif "Epcot" (although it has been replaced again, it's still on the parking toll booths). All the pavilion logos, which were not outdated at all (except for WoL), were simply removed. In their places, we got a graveyard and a wand.
With the SSE refurb, Disney seems to finally be realizing that "updating Epcot" doesn't mean "making it look exactly like today so that it's outdated again in five years."
