But first let's figure out how much of EPCOT Center was dated...
first off is the architecture, it's post modern, you can't change that, and EPCOT's future was full of a blend between water, trees, and pavilions. Also the pavilions has various color schemes that are not part of the heavily tan and pinks and purples that now dot future world.
With the exception of a few pieces of architecture i.e. the very dated blue black and orange color patters at the bottom of SSE, I can't see how future world's architecture needed to change that much. They would have saved themselves alot of money.
Imagination? All the original ride needed was a technology upgrade, and new technology in the imageworks and a 3d film.
The land? How was kitchen kabaret dated? It was more fresh, more classic than the dated food rocks. Symbiosis was very dated, and was changed, but did it really need a character infestation from the lion king? Listen to the Land, wasn't too dated, and suprisingly much of it has survived when it became living with the land.
The Seas...I have to admit the blue exterior color is so much better than the tan and white color. Did the post modern mural really have to change? Or couldn't they have built a mural next to the stroller parking and where you can have your picture taken with nemo and friends. What about the hydrolators, that was pretty futuristic, as was seabase alpha...to an extent. IMO they spent more money then they had to on the seas, and ended up turning into a pixarfest.
Communicore, with a doubt needed a face lift, but even the original Innoventions (1994-1998) followed in its place with similar concepts and ideas, and even the plaza was nearly intact before the ghastly 1999 remodel.
Universe of Energy did need to be updated, but why did so much technology i.e. radok screens, and effects i.e. smells, and mirrored walls have to be sacrificed for a show that relied on them and could have allowed them to continue for use.
Wonders, became dated in a matter of years, too bad , but hopefully something fresh and new will come out of it.
Horizons, as much as I loved this ride, it relied too much on the future, and without a sponsor was too expensive to update every scene.
World of Motion, honestly all that ride needed was some new endings with the projector screens. It could have easily stayed on the second floor with a new queue, and test track on the first floor with both rides exiting into a remodeled transcenter.
World Showcase films? Need updating. China was good. Let's see what they do with Canada's.
For me, while things must change, I think it comes down to, what really needs to change, and must one really have to spend alot of money on it.
The cosmetics of future world, and its architecture were changed for odd reasons in my opinion, it took a welcome area i.e. the main entrance, and innoventions plaza, and turned it into too many different patterns, textures, and bland and "hot" color schemes.
Then you have the "winners" like project tomorrow, which once again uses the entire area of the former earth station, has nice and simple color schemes and patterns, somewhat futureistic, but still sleek, bold, and simple.
Not flashy, over-the-top!
