I’ve said something along these lines before, but Zegler’s comments are perfectly consistent with what many young women her age would say. I wonder whether some of the posters here who’ve torn her apart would feel quite so strongly if they heard similar words about the film from a cousin, niece, or daughter. I somehow doubt it.

It does feel odd…. That most of the people offended by her words are middle age men

Fairytales have their own logic and are best enjoyed on their own terms. Stalking seems an ill-fitting way to describe the dynamic under discussion here. Still, it’s just an opinion, and nothing worth making a fuss over.

It was a lighthearted, offhand, exaggerated comment. That’s all.

Certain other actresses wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow with that comment. See: Chris Evans vs. Anthony Mackie making the same comment.

My best advice is to just ignore these people until their time expires, which it will.

I understood the original post and am honestly confused by your criticism of it.

I mean, by that standard, Ariel too is a stalker, spying on Eric and developing a fixation on him without his knowledge. Only recently have Disney films moved away from a fairytale notion of romance in which the protagonists—often teenagers—basically fall in love at first sight. In that regard, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is consistent with a much longer tradition that continued into the ’90s.

I think it’s this more than anything, the comments come off as a slight on our generation, we grew up on Disney, grew up on love at first sight, grew up on true love being the ultimate power… and then a kid calls it weird and says the Prince is a stalker because he falls in love with her at first sight, it just rubs the wrong way.

Not that different from kids calling people boomers because they think their beliefs are “outdated”. Insulting people, even if unintentional, is not a great way to get them to buy your product.

I’m your generation (or just a few years behind), and I didn’t take it as a slight at all. As I asked in a subsequent post, do the grown adults (mostly men, it seems) who are apparently so affronted by her words respond this strongly when the young people in their lives express similar sentiments about things they view as old-fashioned? I would hope and expect not. I find the whole thing extremely strange and frankly unsettling. The supposed adults in the room should have more self-control.

And you know all that noise online from her casting, many of them were likely never going to watch it, and the ones who did probably ate crow, silently, and never course corrected.

Speaking of the Oscars, we completed the death race a week ago, so I'd already heard all of the nominees for Best Original Song within their respective movies, but I just sat down to listen to them in isolation and woof. It's such a weak field this year. I have no idea why the big songs from Moana 2 or Mufasa didn't make it as nominees. They were both on the shortlist, but didn't make it to the final five.

That was my comment…. And it was not meant to be a slight…. As I am a middle age man who grew up on Disney… we sometimes need to see other perspectives then just view it through our lens
