DHS Monster Inc Land Coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios

The announcement says the permit for work was filed earlier this week so they would have known the timeline for Muppets closing. Unless the work is just to remove the structure or it’s being reused somehow during construction.

If so, then there’s a very good chance the permit and work are not related to the Monstropolis project and is work that was just already scheduled to occur. Buena Vista Construction Company is Disney’s in-house construction company and it has been a long time since they have been tasked with a project on the scale of a new land. New attractions and lands are generally contracted to large general contractors. It’s possible they’ve decide to make a big change regarding Buena Vista Construction Company but I think we’d need more evidence to come to that conclusion.

Moth has hinted that Simpsons is in the running for AC. But if by some chance Disney gets the full Marvel rights back for WDW, that is probably what they'll gravitate towards for the spot.

If we are talking pie in the sky stuff with little hope of happening, I’d say if Disney got the Marvel rights back they would be the anchor for the 5th gate. The park would have a good vs evil theme. Half the park dedicated to all heroes with Marvel characters, incredibles, etc while the 2nd half would be dedicated to Villians (since we’re dreaming the Vikkians land in MK can become something else). Each half could have sub lands within for various IPs (think Islands of Adventure style) and the sides could be divided by some body of water where they could have shows that would be battles with good vs evil on opposite sides.

Now back to reality…..Disney could still use AC for a hero land. It just can’t use the restricted Marvel characters. So Black Panther, Guardians, Dr Strange as well as Incredibles, Baymax, Ralph and other cartoon characters. Instead of being a land where you are transported into the set of a movie like SW or Toy Story it would be more of a Fantasyland style land with various rides and attractions themed to various heroes with just a coherent architecture. They could then work in a mix of dark rides, flat rides, meet and greets, a stage show and dining/shopping. It’s exactly what DHS needs. More attractions without height restrictions that would greatly increase capacity.

This makes sense as a possible explanation. I can’t see how they would possibly use that structure once construction starts so it’s probably the case.

The last thing WDW needs is a 5th gate...They already have 4 theme parks that need more capacity...an underbuilt built 5th gate would be terrible IMO. They need to flash out EPCOT, World Showcase needs a new Pavilion or two complete with attractions, DHS needs a lot of additional attractions, and there are many areras of the MK that need work especially Tomorrowland. All of that is more than they have plans on doing....Why begin another huge expnse, ground-up Theme park when they can't even finish and maintain the mount they currently have?

I agree, they cant even properly maintain their existing parks -
Multiple sewer backups in MK
The sewer smell is still in EPCOT even after the "successful" (renovation?) of future world
They will never get the ground lighting to work reliably in the failed World Celebration area.
Tiana is still having issues
And who can forget the failed retile job at the Morocco.

Besides that, they will be busy destroying and replacing ROA, destroying and replacing Muppets, destroying and replacing DinoLand USA etc.

The permit also doesn't have an expiration date so it's likely for something small.

There won't be a wide plaza there. They're likely using the narrowness of the avenue to hide the gravity building without having to resort to as much industrial clutter as you see in the AC concept.

It will be interesting if they need to block views or camouflage it from SWGE or if they even care anymore about sightlines from SW.

Would be pretty cool if they tried to disguise it as a star wars building on one side.

Based on the layout of the newer concept art, I don't think they need to worry about sightlines. Most of the rockwork covering the ROTR showbuilding is in the way.

I fully agree. Each of the Florida parks feels like a half-day park. The only exception is Epcot. The removal and lack of pretzel-style darkrides in the Florida parks is criminal. Its D/E tickets or flat rides for the majority of the parks.

MK needs work but it definitely isn't a half-day park. There is more to do there than any other Orlando park. In fact, the only park I think that has more than it is DL.

But growing up with Disneyland as a full day park, MK very much feels like a half day park. I went with a first time visitor in late Summer and by 1 PM we had done just about everything. True, Big Thunder was down for maintenance and Tron wasn't open by our visit, but we did just about everything else. Including the Belle storytelling experience and the clones of Disneyland attractions. 4 hours to complete the park. Another 2-3 to re-ride the top attractions. 6-7 hours does not a full day park make.

I think that is a highly unusual experience. Most people need at least a day to experience MK. If MK isn't a full day park, very few parks in the world are. And that holds whether you break it down by total attractions or just major attractions.

DL is exceptional, but even there, if Cars and Villains happens, MK will be about even with DL.

I'm an advocate for capacity expansions, but MK is not lacking attraction capacity.

You could be entirely right, but there's no way you did the entire park in 4 hours. Carousel of Progress (~25 mins) + Tiki Room (~10 mins) + Hall of Presidents (~25 mins) + Philarmagic (~10 mins) + Country Bear (~10 mins) alone is roughly 90 minutes of experiences if you run across the park and get to the attraction at showtime.

If you've managed to do the entire park in 4-6 hours, sell your touring plan.
