Tiger King was also just before studios were all in on streaming…I stand by my statement… I don’t think we will have a water cooler show on the level of a Game of Thorns or Seinfeld ever again…, perhaps water cooler moments… As I would argue…. Mandalorian was a popular show but not to that level as a series overall… but the baby Yoda moment was
Was Game of “Thorns” a spinoff of Game of Thrones?

Squid Game was a year after Tiger King, and also achieved watercooler status.

What does this mean… I was referring to Game of Thorns… if you are referring to House of Dragon… that is not a Water Cooler show

IMO Squid Game was a popular show, but not a water cooler show… I only know a couple of people who watched Squid Game in real life…. A water cooler show transcends people who watch a lot of content and make it appontment television for just about everyone

There is no show called Game of Thorns. That’s what I meant. :)

I define “watercooler show” as one that suddenly everyone is talking about, especially if I start hearing about it from many people at my workplace.

Re: appointment television, totally agree. That’s a thing of the past. Replaced by “oh crap, I’d better binge that show this weekend so I know what people are talking about.”

Ahhh… yeah I got you… stupid auto correct

I work with a bunch of Star wars fans… who still make appointment television for the Disney plus shows… but I don’t consider any of those as Water cooler shows… even the Mandalorian… none of them to my knowledge watched Squid Game… I do know a couple of people outside of work who do… but it does not feel like a show I could not escape from hearing about like Seinfeld, Game of Thrones (better), or the first few seasons of The Walkkng Dead

Its a typo and you know it. Stop teasing.

In order for something to become a "water cooler" show in my opinion it has to transcend the show itself to a point where it becomes a part of pop culture. There are very few shows in the modern streaming era that do this, not even Squid Games.

Hi gang! Thursday box office is out, previewing how this weekend will look with a few new films debuting.

Inside Out 2 continues to be strong nearly a month after its opening. But it looks like the two new movies are getting a tepid-at-best response from the box office this weekend.

And now that it's mid July, I think we can just about put to bed the box office financials on Planet Of The Apes 9. Here's how it did compared to its two predecessors, adjusted for inflation. I doubt we'll see another Apes movie, if I were to guess. 🧐

Apes 9: Production $160, Marketing $80, Domestic B.O. Take $102, Overseas B.O. Take $90 = $48 Million Loss

Also, just before the July 4th holiday weekend, the Garfield movie bested Wish at the global box office. Garfield hasn't yet opened in a few European countries, nor in Japan, but the results are already in when you compare it to the last WDAS release Wish and the last Pixar release Inside Out 2.

Now you are just ignoring me. :(

Also not presented, but for clarity of comparison, is the 190-244 inflation adjusted budget of War for the Planet of the Apes. The numbers amount appears to be on the lower end of the actual suspected range.

Longlegs could be the surprise of the year for me… I had no sense of that kind of buzz… especially with horror underperforming this year… huge win for Neon

It was very good. Cage has been acting his behind off as of late. This and Maxxxine were very entertaining movies.
I did enjoy Maxxxine….I have not been able to check out Longlegs… I had prior commitments this weekend… I hope to do so in the next week…. The reviews have been stellar

Ugh, Longlegs — I’m sick of the giant creepy red ad for it on this site.

Not a horror fan. I can handle one horror movie every 2 years. But I read the synopsis so I at least know what the popular ones are about.

Great news about Inside Out 2, though!

Really looking forward to this one. Maika Monroe was fantastic in Watcher (a bit of a twist on Rear Window) from a couple years back.

But I have a lot of catching up to do before we get there. After a long hiatus from the theater, we just saw Kinds of Kindness and The Fall Guy today. I can see why KoK isn't Searchlight's awards play this year. Not the most offbeat Lanthimos has ever done, but far from broadly accessible.

Twisters appears to be doing ok after all. Not because its opening weekend is coming above estimates, but actually because the production budget was over-called. At 155m, its comp is now actually Apes. So opening like Apes is less worrying than I thought it was going to be.

Though international may be underperforming Apes.
