The bear wouldn't stand a chance against my boys
The guys have decided to grill on Monday and have a london broil, a couple of pounds of burgers, a nice sized piece of pork loin cut into chops, 2 different types of marinated chicken and a couple of types of hot dogs in the fridge for that, of course there will be several sides to go with that. I had better not have to cook for at least 2 days after that!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely! None of us have ever made that much (50k) in a year. My dad made 20k a year working as a security guard, my mom had her own business cleaning houses and we lived below the poverty line. (they were divoced and we lived with mom) I think my brother makes around 35-40k at the University, but he and his husband and their family also own a restaruant. And my husband makes around 40k now, and the cost of living here is WAY more expensive than it is in Wyoming. Granted I work half time now, but for years I only worked 12 hours a week. But in Wyoming, 40k is more than a comfortable living. My starting teacher's salary when I was in Wyoming was 21k a year, back in 2001. The mines back in the day paid over 50k a year for driving truck...no idea what they pay now. And if you were in one of the more responsible positions, like a supervisor or electrician, you were really raking in the bucks. When the average salary is about 25k and you're making 3 times that, you're golden. Teachers, nurses, and apparently security guards are underpaid. You almost HAVE to have 2 incomes anymore....roommate, or a relationship where both people work. I really don't know how my mom made our money stretch so far....she was an EXCELLENT money manager.
Yeah, North Dakota is the 2nd coldest state in the US (Alaska is coldest). Wyoming comes in at number 4 (Minnesota is 3rd). We always covered windows with plastic tarp in the winter, and if a storm was coming, we hung blankets over windows and doors for insolation. In our cars, we keep jugs of water, and a coffee can with non-perishables like candy bars, crackers, etc in case we get stranded during a storm, as well as a sleeping back or extra coats and hats and gloves. We're taught how to survive if we're out in a blizzard. I remember my mom teaching us how to carve out a niche in the snow to block wind when I was probably only 3 or 4. And when my husband came to visit before we were married, I remember my mom chewing him up one side and down the other because it was a beautiful day and we had run up to the mall (it hardly deserved to be called a mall) with her and he didn't bring a jacket with him. She impressed upon him how the weather could changed QUICKLY and you never wanted to be without a coat, so even if it was summer and really warm, you brought a coat because you didn't want to be caught in a freak snow storm without a coat. One year, the 4th of July parade apparently got snowed out? It snowed the week before our September wedding, so my in-laws repacked all their stuff and brought cold-weather stuff, and then it was 80 degrees on our wedding day. The first time my husband came to visit, his watch stopped working because it was so cold. As soon as he got back to the Netherlands, it started working again. I still have a down-filled coat in storage that I will probably never need here, but used all winter there. You learn to live with it.
The petite lady from Japan , Miki Sudo won the Nathans July 4 contest eating 48 hot dogs in 10 minutes. That's incredible. She could take on the bear.

One just has to find a way to make it work but that requires retuning your mindset. My first jobs out of school, I brownbagged my lunches, cooked food at home and budgeted per every dollar where my expenses would go to. At the same time I purposely lived below my means and invested monthly in mutual funds when back in the day that was not a thing to do. Time magazine wrote an article on The Death of Equities. How so wrong was that article. Equity investing long term is pretty much your money is working harder than you do. The books, The Tightwad Gazette and The Millionaire Next Door was my go to reading material and it still is when I refer to some information. I give credit to my parents who taught me to account for spending and budgeting and the power of dollar cost averaging in investing in the markets for over 30 years.
