I liked Maelstrom, but it was dated and got boring after numerous visits. I've only done FEA once, so it seemed OK but I'll wait for a few more passes before forming an opinion. What would have been interesting to me is to redo Maelstrom with a different (less dark) perspective of Norway.
I agree, just because its dated doesn't mean its automatically required to be replaced. It can be updated. Although I really liked the dark atmosphere of the ride.

I felt Maelstrom was different, but certainly not something that would make people get off the ride and jump a plane to Norway. That is really what World Showcase was about. It tried to emulate a Worlds Fair in which different nations built pavilions to sell tourist on making a trip there. Sort if a pre-Travel Channel.

Maelstrom did not do that and when it didn't Norway stopped sponsorship. And there was Disney with an IP that fit in the mood if not the actual country. Since the majority of any Disney Park relies heavily on the "suspension of disbelief" that people cannot get past that and realize that based on the fact that people were not spending any time or money in the Norway pavilion it wasn't a draw it was just an expense. It doesn't matter one iota if Frozen isn't actually Norway, Neither are trolls other than legend and required that same suspension to enjoy. I don't know of a single tourist that went to Norway to see an oil rig. I'm the first to say that a lot of change has been bad, but they only thing that kept what remained of the Norway Pavilion from being boarded up was the coincidence that all of a sudden Frozen became popular and fit in well enough to save the place and also helped Epcot to fill some seats..

Okay, this needs to be said. I'm so tired of valid criticisms of the direction of the Disney parks being brushed aside by people saying "oh you just don't like change." It really has to stop.

Fair enough. And I am equally as tired of people constantly whining and crying about every single change that ever happens, as if WDW has to remain frozen in time as it was in the 70s and 80s. There’s a really simple solution here. If someone detests the direction in which WDW is headed, go ahead and vacation somewhere else. Last time I checked, in half a century, not a single person has ever been forced to visit WDW.
I thought when the pandemic was over, this reservation stuff would stop and things would go back to normal!

I honestly don’t know why it hasn’t already. I don’t hate all the changes that have been made at WDW (like a lot of people here do), but I certainly don’t like this one. I get why it might have been necessary at first, but still???
We still have severe labor and supply shortages in the area where I live. Almost every hospitality business is hiring “for all positions.” I can’t imagine things are back to normal at WDW especially given the number of employees they need.

And they are not giving an inch on wages. They are going to ride this out.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but there is a difference between "whining and crying" and pointing out failures of WDW to produce attractions similar to their original standards. Sure, "just don't go" is an answer if you don't like it, but many of us still love Disney and don't want to stop going because the direction of the parks isn't what we'd like. There are still many good things they haven't destroyed, but the last 20 years has proven to have quite a few "bad" attempts at change/expansion.

Bad
  • Genie+
  • Maintenance at Disney has been poor for almost 20 years.
  • Toy Story Land isn't good enough, built on the cheap. All outside in the Florida heat? Lack of restaurants, indoor queues, poor attractions, etc.
  • Frozen is a travesty, done on the cheap to pander to fans of the movie.
  • 7DMT is way too short and underwhelming.
  • Smuggler's Run is underwhelming
  • 2 rides per new land are not enough (Star Wars, Pandora, Toy Story)
Good
  • Star Wars RotR
  • Flight of Passage
  • Guardians Cosmic Rewind
  • Good hotel, restaurant options
  • Skyliner
  • Fireworks

I have stopped going to Disneyland many years ago due to sever health and financial problems. Right before the pandemic I said to myself I would really like to see it one more time. I have not made it and as time goes on the less, I want to try! I used to be premium annual pass holder going weekly. All I hear about is overpriced overcrowded unmaintained parks. Then all of a sudden, the war on racism hit Disney and the new vision seems to be get rid of the old Disney and rebuild a new one completely! They seem to find a racial problem with every single attraction! All I see is history being destroyed. Walt's vision was an all-inclusive clean family park all can enjoy. He envisioned adding and expanding but NOT removing and changing is my opinion.

I think everyone should be free to state their opinion, critical or not.

This is all in fun and will make no difference because NO MATTER WHAT IS SAID ON THESE FORUMS, DISNEY IS GONNA DO WHAT DISNEY IS GONNA DO!

We just gotta take what we get.
Sadly I feel the same way and too old and tired to do much these days!

Disney should absolutely stay out of the business of politics. Whatever side you're on, it seems bad for the stock and business. If they pander to one side, the other side is upset and the news appears very detrimental to the share price.

Managing public opinion and promoting the Disney story have been two of Chapek's many failures.

Great post. And all fair points raised by you. My only point is that what is “good” and “bad” is obviously subjective. For example, I don’t agree with several things on your list, although I certainly respect your right to feel the way that you do.
