We've been back from Hawaii for a few days now after the trip back from hell. I haven't made it to the gym yet. My aunt came in yesterday from SC, so we did our cookout today instead of Monday, and I was extremely jet lagged on Thursday and Friday and didn't make it to the gym. I have a swim reservation for tomorrow afternoon. I'm planning on sleeping late, going to the gym, and then spending the rest of the day on homework. Fun stuff.

I think I may have accidentally gotten my knee better. Right before my trip, I had a sinus infection. I went to urgent care (copay is the same for urgent care as primary care, and I actually don't have a primary care doctor right now) and they gave me an antibiotic, and since I was having asthma symptoms, I asked for Prednisone. I took it for about a week. Well, I didn't put it together, but my knee has been better. My parents were even commenting on how much walking I was doing. Then today, a family friend mentioned they put her on it for her rotator cuff and it helped her post surgery, and the lightbulb went off all of the sudden. So...I have PT this week, but I'm thinking of having them grab my doctor and asking about maybe doing a cortisone shot in a few weeks, depending on how it does. I still have trouble on uneven surfaces. Sand in Hawaii was terrible. But I'm not having nearly the daily pain anymore.

A cortisone shot may be something to look into. (Sometimes only, those can be tricky, in that the physician has to hit the exact spot with accuracy. I had one years ago in my knee area. Took days for it to do anything at all, and after that, I gave it about a 50% approval rating. And my rheumatologist back then, was the chief of service at a major hospital.) Also, a guy I knew also had a shot in his leg, and it didn't "take" at all.

Yet, some other people have had good results. So it's a bit of a carp shoot, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it.

I ended up not making it to the gym. Jet lag plus a migraine. I'll try again either tomorrow or Tuesday at lunch.

I had one years ago in my left ankle. It did help. That's the ankle I barely have any problems with after PT plus the cortisone shot. My right one... that's the one that I'll probably need to get surgically fixed at some point, but I've had enough of surgeries for now.

My mother couldn't walk and went to ER. From there she was transferred to sub acute rehab facility where the first doctor she saw was three days later after living there in shared room. Doctor advised she needed to be there at least a month for meds and rehab. My family pulled my mother against the wishes of the doctor and RNs. Mom went to a pain doctor, got a cortisone shot and was walking again afterwards. Some medical facilities just take advantage of patients and their insurance companies.

Yeah, I'm not terribly worried about it with this group. They treat athlete's, including the Orioles and Ravens, which is why I went to them, but sometimes doctors just don't think of things. I think this was one of those cases. Lord knows they've gotten enough money from me and my insurance company since they also treated my broken finger (albeit a different doctor; a hand specialist) which I got in the same accident that tore my PCL.

Good news! The Yellowstone North loop is already reopening on Saturday, AND they are ditching the Alternating license plate system, so we can get into the park whenever we want to, AND we can still see Mammoth! So I changed my reservations all back to what they were when the flooding first happened. I don't think you can get to Gardiner, so I left that one out and stuck with 2 nights in West Yellowstone, but it's sooooo much closer than Dubois, and we had really wanted to eat at this 50s diner in West Yellowstone and were disappointed that we wouldn't be able to, unless we did lunch. Now it won't matter when we go.

My brother picked up his daughter from girl scout camp in Montana this morning and he said when they were driving up there last night, the sign said you could get to Gardiner, but not south of there, but the north loop was opening on Saturday. I thought he must be mistaken because they kept saying the North loop would be closed the whole season, but I looked it up and sure enough, it's opening already. AND, I found my ring I got for our first anniversary that I've been looking for for like a year. I had taken it off to get in the shower because it's pearl and pearls are very sensitive. When I came back, it was gone. I looked all over on top of my night stand, in all the drawers, around the nightstand, under the bed...couldn't find it. But I was looking for some documents I'll need for our trip, I picked up a stack of papers, and there was my ring. So excited.

it sounds like things are looking up. Hopefully, your flights will fall into place and you'll all be good to go.

That's awesome about the ring. Everything is lining up for you!

Hello-

Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🧨

I've been keeping up with my six week challenge, but I decided to keep doing the six week challenge. I was able to choose a different program in six week challenge, so I started that program today. I liked it better than what I was doing I felt challenged and I was spent when I was done. It was a lower body strength and cardio workout.

We didn't go up to Jersey City today. We decided to stay down here. I have nice back yard and I am not sure there is a place to grill at my husband's building. Even if there was, it's probably going to be popular all day! lol So, we're going up tomorrow. My husband moved up most of his stuff on Friday. I'll go with him tomorrow to bring up the smaller stuff and we'll go exploring there.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe day.

Oh, uh. Was it a bad flight or something else?
It was just one thing after another. Our connection in Houston to BWI got cancelled, so we were in Hawaii an extra day; the airline put us up a night. Then we were supposed to go through LAX; then the flight to BWI from LA got cancelled at 3 am Hawaii time, so we were on the phone with United in the middle of the night. Then we booked flights through Dulles just to get back. I ended up being able to go through BWI to get the car, but my parents had to go Houston, Nashville, Dulles. So I had to get off my flight at BWI, grab the car, grabbed Jimmy John's so I wouldn't pass out from hunger, and drove down to Dulles.

I was up in United Premier Plus (basically a lower tier first class) for Honolulu to Houston, but my parents and brother were in Economy Plus. My brother ate bad Chinese in Honolulu and got food poisoning on the flight. There was also a screaming baby in their section to top it all off. Then on my flight from Houston to BWI, I had a baby behind me who was kicking my seat to the point that I finally had to say something to the mother. Then of course the baby screamed at random points; I just tried to watch my movie. Then the landing was rough and I ended up airsick, in part because I was in the middle seat; so I ended up having to get off and just sit with my head between my legs for a while before I went to get my bags.

It was just not a fun trip back, and I missed a day of work that I didn't intend to miss (my boss was very understanding; but I ended up having to work late because of all the stuff that had to get done because the next day was the 30th and there was stuff that absolutely had to get in). Next time, I think I'll tell my parents that we should just go through Dulles if we're going to fly United. They have way more flights in and out of Dulles than in and out of BWI. It's further, but we would have gotten home. I almost said this time that we should just go through Dulles, and now I'm kind of kicking myself. My dad for some reason didn't want me driving down by Dulles...nevermind that I've been a licensed driver for 10 years now, I once drove from Anaheim to San Diego with no problem when I was 21, and I regularly drive 83 in PA...but somehow driving around Dulles scared him. And I ended up driving it anyway, so there's that.

Hope the rest of the move goes smoothly for the both of you. (At least you'll both get a workout from moving boxes, etc. ) And luckily, you're not moving an entire house full of things. So that should help a bit.

Wow, that sounds absolutely awful. Your poor brother! I know they say "pack your patience," but that is beyond ridiculous. That was definitely a confluence of bad travel juju . All of your future travels will be frictionless from here on out! I know parents traveling with small parents get tired, but it's not fair to let your baby kick someone's seat. I can handle the crying/screaming somewhat, because I just put my music on, but the seat kicking is hard to ignore.

This is the second summer this has happened with all of these cancellations. I think the airlines were too hasty in offering early retirement to their older pilots. They thought they were clever buying them out in the thick of the pandemic, but that was false economy, because these airlines (and mostly the customers) are paying the price for it.

Hello-

Checking in with an upper body strength+cardio workout. I liked it. I struggled with a move called a "push jerk." I couldn't get the move right, so I just used lighter weights and that helped me get the move down.

Other than that, I have been helping my husband put together flatpack furniture this afternoon. I thought we could go for a walk afterwards, but it's raining. Maybe I'll go when/if it stops. There is a gym here, but only 4 people at a time can be in it and you have to book online use it. I'll have a look at it later and see what they have, otherwise I might sleep in tomorrow.

I listened to a recent interview with one of the retired pilots. According to him, they were practically "forced out" -- his words.

I was wondering if this would make a visit to YNP possible for you guys. We popped into WY last Tuesday. Of course, just the south loop was open at that time, but all of the signage on I25 and the visitor center were indicating that the north loop was going to be reopening by the weekend. I think we saw an official news article confirming it a day or two later. I had been trying to convince the family to drive up there, but it was about a 7-8 hour drive one way. So nobody was on board with my crazy plan. I've heard they have started working on a new road for access from Gardiner, since they are already using an old dirt supply road to get employees and deliveries in and out for Mammoth, but it likely won't be ready this season.

Which 50s diner were you looking at? Wondering if it's where we ate last summer. I think it was the Canyon Street Grill.

Yes, that's the one....the Canyon Street Grill. It looks really cute! And there's something all of us will eat there, which is rare.

I'm trying to get all the loose ends tied up before we go. We're going to take a taxi to Amsterdam this time. It's 211 euros for a van that will fit all of us and our luggage, but it seems like the best option. We can't fit 2 suitcases into our car, and we DEFINITELY can't fit 2 suitcases plus all our carry-ons and such, and we COULD go by train, but we'd have to make 2 trips to get all the luggage to the train station, and then we'd have to leave the car there for a month. So it's worth the 200 bucks to have service from our house to the airport so we don't have to worry about it.

It's dicey, though. We've got, on the one hand, the fact that there's a shortage of workers at the airport, so they are canceling 30% of flights....we've still heard NOTHING about ours, so hopefully that's not one being canceled. On the other hand, there's an environmental bill being debated in our government about environmental protection and one of the things is that they want to limit the number of cows, pigs, etc farmers can have because it contributes to greenhouse gasses that damage the Ozone. But the farmers are really mad about it and have been protesting by blocking high traffic areas, or important services, like distribution centers for grocery stores....a lot of shelves are empty because the stores can't get their regular shipments in because the farmers are blocking them with their tractors. And they are apparently also looking at blocking off the airports so people can't get into or out of the airports. We've decided to go a day early and stay at an airport hotel so we won't have to worry about it, hopefully....we'll be close and can just take a shuttle. But if it's not one thing, it's 10.

It was pretty cute and I remember that we liked it. I thought I had more pictures from it, but I may be looking in the wrong places. All I could find was a pic of my girls with a car grill and checkered tile flooring in the background. I think I had a burger and some onion rings. I think several of us got shakes.

It's times like this when I wish I could lend you the space in my vehicle, but I know things are different with vehicle needs over there and you probably don't regularly need all of my cargo capacity.

Definitely sounds like a good plan to try and get in ahead of any protest issues. Hopefully you won't get hurt by cancelations. I have quite a few friends that are in or have been in Europe over the last few weeks. So far, only one family has had problems. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that your experiences are more like my friends who have been issue-free. Mind you, none have flown into or out of your area, but so far about 27 people in the mix and only a family of four with issues. I know that family went to a number of countries and their cancelations seem to center around Munich. In any event, wishing you the best of luck with your travel because I know you've been trying to get over here for this trip for a while.

Yes. It's too bad, because they let go of the ones with the most experience. This had been brewing before covid even. A few years ago, the FAA increased the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 and the pilots in the regionals realized they basically had to slog it out there for an additional 5 years before they could hope to work for a large airline. Quite a few left, but covid exposed what an unsustainable balancing act that really was.

If you are interested in aviation industry chatter, Mentour Pilot is a really good YouTube channel. He flies 737s for Ryan Air and he covers all the angles of aviation.

I think because your flight is a long haul, you'll likely be ok. The airlines try to prioritize the longer flights because they are more lucrative than short haul flights. You've planned ahead to try to mitigate potential issues as much as you can, so that is good.

Hello-

I did a full body tabata workout this morning. I went for a walk yesterday and today. I never used the gym at my husband's apartment, but I will the next time I go up. His apartment is tiny, but he did only want 'a hotel room with a kitchen.' The only thing I don't like is his AC unit. It's the the ones you get in motels, like an under the window unit. It doesn't feel like it pulls out humidity, so the unit feels a bit clammy. Plus, it's not that great for airflow. But there is a cute cafe across the street that serves up diner-type food, but also a few Korean dishes and ramen dishes, plus some fusion-y things like bulgogi cheesesteak sandwiches and Korean tacos. I had an egg and cheese on a bagel with iced coffee and ate it on the roof.

My husband is going up Sunday for a few nights, I might go with him. The only thing holding me back is if stay home, I will only cook once for myself and eat leftovers for dinner until he comes back. If I go with him, I will be cooking every night. I'm leaning towards staying here, because I am feeling lazy nowadays.

Seconding... basically every flight from Honolulu was going out when I was there. It was the flights elsewhere that were the problem. Plus logistically, they need to get the planes to their destination so that they have a plane for the next route...it screws things up on the long haul flights if they can't get them out.
