working out for Disney

Good morning-

I'm checking in with a dance cardio/toning type workout. Not my usual, but I feel like I need to shake things up. It's kind of like old school 80s-90s hi low aerobics.

Today is my husband's birthday and I need to finish his cake today. It is a banana pudding cake. It's three layers of vanilla cake filled with homemade banana pudding, Nilla wafers and bananas. I could not find Nilla wafers to save my life, so I made my own. I saw them on Amazon and they were 2 boxes for $15. ❌❌❌ I am going to meet my nemesis, Swiss meringue buttercream shortly. :p I just dread frosting cakes because I end up in a cussing, frustrated mess. :hilarious: But regardless of what they look like, they always taste good, so I guess that's a good thing.
Happy birthday to your husband!!

You can MAKE Nilla wafers?? Recipe please??

I'm sorry you're so busy. The kids just went back to school today after spring break. They have another week in May. E's got a test week next week, so she only has to go to school for an hour or two each day for a test or two, and then she's done. So next week will be easy as far as her schedule, but she'll be a little ball of stress and she'll spend all her time hidden in her books and notes.

Good luck with the family visit...hope it all goes well! And good luck with the decision about whether to send both girls to Dallas....that's a tough call. I always think I want some alone time, but then as soon as the kids are gone, I really miss E. I don't see much of A, because he's kind of a hermit....he only comes out of his room for school, tennis, chess, and food. But E and I watch a bunch of movies and series together, and she helps me cook, and we talk all the time. So when she's not here, it seems really lonely. Alone time is really nice....for about a day. After that, I want company again. Will you have a lot of obligations if K stays home that you won't have if she goes? Will it be helpful for your recovery to have that downtime? Will it HURT your recovery if she stays home? And what does SHE want to do?

After spring break next week, Good Friday is the only day off until the end of the school year. Their last day of school is May 27th, but with finals schedules, it may be more like the 25th. I'm sorry the test causes E so much stress.

She wants to go to Dallas...says she needs a vacation. 😂 I'm mixed about it. If she goes to Dallas, I'll have some peace and quiet, but I have worries if she stays and worries if she goes. It won't hurt anything with my recovery, but I have to figure out which worry would eat at me more. I like the girls together on road trips because it's always good to have a bathroom buddy on the road...safety in numbers. On the flip side, my husband and my older one tend to butt heads. He starts tuning her out when he gets annoyed and he's already griping that he's going to have to hear her whining when she gets bored. I have a feeling I'm getting a weekend to myself.

Just kidding.

This is it. It's a little off center on the plate, because I was concerned with getting off of the turntable in one piece. My husband took the photo and has asked if I want a piece. It's his birthday, he can have it when he wants. I am not ready for it, though. I probably could have blitzed the vanilla waters a little longer. Ah, well, it's the thought that counts.

They're not just like Nilla wafers, but for my purpose, they were perfect. If I ever make them again, I will be scooping them. I piped them out (as the recipe suggests) and the dough is like a sugar cookie dough. I had to take lots of breaks, because my hand was cramping up.

I have slipped out of good habits for a a good while after fitting on everything at Cedar Point. Recently got back in the habit of Gym every day and calorie counting. I am not even close to to the number on the scale as I was before when I had my Cedar Point trip last summer. Now an impromptu opportunity to my first visit to Knotts in two weeks has be concerned I will take a walk of shame and not fit on some coasters.
I had a mistake of not keeping a next tangible incentive once I fit on Top Thrill Dragster and others last year in Ohio.
Anyone have Knotts experience?

No Knotts experiences, but I can relate to slipping from good habits. At least you're getting back into going to the gym and calorie counting. I think a lot of us experience this...being good for a while and then not. Setting good incentives is tough. Even when you feel like you've made a real life change, it's so easy to find our ways back to old favorites that derail things.

As for Knotts...I did a search and found this from 7 months ago on Reddit. Hope it helps.

There are several rides that have test vehicles out front so you can sit in the seat and try the restraints for comfort before getting in line. Specifically Xcelerator, Hangtime, and Silver Bullet have these. I think Supreme Scream might but I don't remember.

I always struggle with my cake moving around when I am trying to crumb coat it. I place non skid material under the cake board. I put some frosting between the cake and cake board. It still moves. When you decorate your cakes, what do you do to prevent the cake from moving around?

I often place a plastic dowel in the center. Granted, I am usually doing it to help support an edible topper piece, but it helps keep the cake from sliding around. I typically use the ones in the pic below. It's pretty easy to cut them with a serrated knife before placing it into the cake. As for gluing to your cake board, some is the glue and some is the board.
  • "Gluing" the cake to cardboard is usually more effective than gluing to plastic, ceramic, or metal "boards."
    • Even "foil" covered cake drums and boards are porous, so you're more likely to have a stronger bond with those.
  • Looser frostings with higher fat content (fat to sugar ratio) are less effective. A crusting buttercream or spreadable ganache will work better, as far as spreadable icings go.
    • adding a few drops of water before adding the frosting glue can help the sugars go to work and begin the gluing process.
  • Some people just use melted chocolate or royal icing for their glue since they are known to have higher adherence capabilities and dry pretty quickly.
    • Not sure if you ever have fondant around, but a moistened fondant disc would also be a good gluing piece.

Hello-

I did a 50 minute workout. It was a bit of dance cardio with some "toning" mixed in. The toning parts kill me. I find them very difficult and I have to take breaks here and there. It burns so badly. 🔥 I am not used to working out these smaller muscles. lol My wrists are beginning to get cranky, because so much time is spent on all fours.

I got my hair done today and I was the only one with a mask on. :hilarious: My stylist asked me why and I said my son was still unvaccinated. She asked me why again and I said he is mistrustful of the vaccines. OMG, she was telling me about someone who had cancer and had all three shots, but she has no anti bodies now. She had to take boosters twice a week "in the butt." Then she said it changes your "genetics." She said her mom is a nurse and there are a bunch of studies about mRNA vaccines that are coming out in the next few weeks. Then she said something about 5G. Like, what? Now I have seen a study out of Sweden on the internet that said mRNA converts to DNA in a liver cell line, in vitro. I have read it to the best of my non-scientific ability and but they don't mention the implications for it. Plus this is a cell line, not an actual liver in a living person. I can't find anything about it other than websites and blogs that are not trustworthy, IMO. So, I don't know if that is what is "coming out in the next few weeks." I have read there were rare cases of autoimmune hepatitis after getting mRNA vaccines, but they happened days after getting the first shot. But I would like the established medical community discuss the implications for this study from Sweden. The only info I can find is coming from people who are not doctors or scientists, but are drawing their own conclusions from this study, anyway. That only leads to cherry picking data and then, more misinformation.

Thanks!

I do have dowels and I probably should have used them yesterday, since my cake was fruit and custard filled. I had been gluing my cake to the cake board with frosting, which gets soft 5 minutes after I take it out of the freezer. Then it's slip and slide when I try to frost. My cakes never look nice, because there is always a hole that I can't patch up without going down to cake on another part of it when smoothing.

I'll try fondant disc the next time. Part of my issue is I don't get a lot of practice. I have nobody to bake for around here and I don't want to be baking cakes on a weekly basis for practice.

I just thought of the container of Marshmallow Fluff I have. That stuff gets everywhere and it is kind of hard to remove it from surfaces. That might work, too.

Happy Friday! 🎉

I didn't feel like a dance-y cardio with a bunch of fire hydrants and donkey kicks today. So, I found a Kettlebell hiit workout on YouTube. It was 30 minutes, but I do a warm up and cooldown, so it's more like 40. I enjoyed it. I'd rather go all out for 20-30 minutes than something more moderate for an hour. I also find the short, intense workouts more energizing and invigorating afterwards.

My husband's off today, so I think we're going to go out and do something. I'm not sure what yet. :cat:

I don't know about the Sweden thing, but people over here are setting fire to the 5G towers because they think 5G is responsible for causing covid. And E has a friend whose dad thinks that the vaccines change your DNA, and that the little Q-tip things they use for testing release "nano-particles" into your brain. He refused to let her get tested, but they are divorced and the mom works for the health department in some capacity, so mom took her to get tested....and she was positive. But there is a TON of misinformation going around and none of it comes from reliable sources.

No workout for me today, which is a complete bummer....it's BEAUTIFUL outside. It's like 60 degrees and sunny....so nice! But E has had a sore throat for 2 weeks, and she had negative self tests every day for 5 or 6 days, and then another after around 10 days, before we went to the zoo. So she didn't have corona. We tested the day after we went to the zoo...still negative. She went to school Monday, started feeling a bit "blurry" as she calls it that night, then woke up on Tuesday and the sore throat was terrible and she could barely talk. But we thought nothing of it, because it had been sore for almost 2 weeks by then and she had tested negative every time. So I decided to take her to the doctor for the sore throat because it wasn't going away. Wednesday night I had her do another self test....all students are supposed to do them twice a week. And it was positive. And I woke up this morning with a slightly sore throat and a bit phlegmy.....could just be hay fever, but it doesn't feel like that. So we just went and got tested. We wanted to get all of us tested at the same time, but A had school and they need permission from anyone over 12 to set up an appointment, so we had to wait until we were all home at the same time, which was today at 12:30. We called, and they wouldn't make appointments for my husband or A, because they don't have symptoms. You can only get an appointment without symptoms if you have exposure to someone who has confirmed covid with a PCR test, not a self test. We're sure E has it, I possibly have it, but they won't test the boys. But in any case, I'm in quarantine, and not feeling fantastic, so no workout for me. :(

I really think the dowels help more than any kind of "gluing" to the cake board. I was thinking about it last night and it occurred to me that several of our Disney cakes had a bit of leaning and sliding as well. I've never seen any internal supports in their single tier cakes or multi-tier minis. So, even when you're paying Disney prices...there's some cake sliding.

I used to bake all the time...experimenting with flavors and consistencies...but it's just no good to have that much cake on hand all the time.

I heard something about the Swedish study, but if you search it online, the results come back like a bad game of telephone. Each writeup seems to take a lot of creative license with their interpretation, and seems to become even more muddied in the interpretations of interpretations. I saw something else quoting specific bits from the actual study...some of which showing how badly people are misinterpreting the findings, or lack there of...and some that have tacked on completely inaccurate details. Most of it, like you said, seems to be cherry picking specific segments or words to fit certain groups' agendas rather than presenting the actual results of the study.
