working out for Disney

Today was my first day back in the gym since all of my stomach stuff. I was so anxious and eager to get in there that I had trouble sleeping last night. I can't say I did anything revolutionary in there today, but just getting in there and doing the normal stuff at full intensity was enough after being sick. I also have a short maintenance run later today. I'm kind of looking forward to it more than usual. I've decided to sign up for a few 5ks before doing my September 10ks. I have some race anxiety and I think I'll reduce it if I get my feet wet with some shorter races. So, I'm planning on running one next weekend and another in a couple of weeks. The one next weekend is Christmas themed (Christmas in July), so when I couldn't sleep, I put together a playlist of holiday music that I think would be good for a run. Hey, if I'm going to be sitting up at 12:30am, I might as well be doing something productive. So, when I run today, I am going to try out my race start approach I'm considering along with my holiday music. 🎄

Wow, that sounds like an action-packed vacation. The ghost tour sounds like a lot of fun! I've always wanted to try whitewater rafting, too. I hope you do a TR. :)
I'm excited and yet I don't feel like I've really planned for any of this. Of course, that's not the case, but I think Disney trip planning has made me feel under-prepared when going into trips where I don't plan out every bit in advance. I think the ghost tour would be a lot of fun, but my older one is a bit skittish with this stuff, so I'm still on the fence about booking. Personally, I've always found Stephen King books to be a lot of fun, so to tour the hotel that provided the inspiration for The Shining is right up my alley. Whitewater rafting has been on my husband's wish list for a while. I'll admit that it makes me a bit nervous, but so does horseback riding! 😂 I will probably do a TR. School here starts on Aug 12th, so a TR should help me stay sane in the chaos!

A few years ago my wife went white water rafting and I trailed along to take photos. Part of the river flowed alongside a highway so I would drive along ahead of them and set up the camera and tripod, snap a few pics when they went by, then hop in the car and go down to the next accessible area and do it all over again. It was funny some of the people who got confused seeing the same old coot taking photos around every other bend in the river.
We are fortunate to live in an area where there are several whitewater rivers within easy driving distance, and I used to enjoy it too, but with my fragile back, I had to quit doing it, too rough for me.
Here are a couple of pics of her from the Ocoee River near where the Olympic whitewater events were held many years ago, although she is a little difficult to identify in the second photo.

It's that second picture that scares me! :hilarious:

Oh no, not trying to scare you. On our rivers, if you don't get dumped out a couple of times, you have had a boring trip. OK, not boring, but less fun.

It's OK. I've just never been before, so I guess I'm not sure really what is the norm or what to expect. That second picture is definitely what my husband would like! 😂 The company I went with offers three levels of trips. The most mild is a float trip, which is definitely not what we're wanting. Their most aggressive option is Class IV rapids with non-stop whitewater and wasn't recommended for kids younger than older teen. The middle grade option (which is what I booked) has some whitewater and drops, which supposedly puts it as a Class II-III. The pictures I've seen still look pretty intense.

There are all kinds of fancy things out there to calculate the whole HR thing, and each is a bit controversial. 220-Age for maximum heart rate is the easiest, but it doesn't account for anything but age.

Wow! That's awful for working conditions. I suspect that things don't normally get this warm, so you wouldn't typically need some kind of ventilation. Do you have any way of getting fans in there or some kind of portable a/c? I know some people will put a bowl of ice beneath their fan to help cool the air being blown if there's no a/c.
Well, it's a huge warehouse, 2 floors, so there's no way that fans help. They have standing fans at a couple of the packing stations, but that only helps the people who are working at one of those packing stations. And since the biggest part of the job is walking orders, (16,000 steps today) and you are basically walking the length of half a football field, back and forth, pushing a big cart, there's no way to have a fan on you when you are walking orders. Ventilation is ALWAYS a problem, because it's a physical job...you are always active/moving. But normally, it's bearable. But when it gets over about 25 Celsius outside, it starts to get uncomfortable, and this week has been between 30-35 all week except today. I would imagine we were over 100 Fahrenheit on Tuesday, at least upstairs, so without any windows or any way to circulate the air, it's basically a sweatshop.

So, I worked out on Monday because I was planning on yesterday as a break day. I got in a run on Monday...a little over 5k...and I beat my previous best 5k time. I rested a bit when I got home and then hit the gym. I was feeling ridiculously tired. I biked for about 20 minutes at my standard speed, but dropped to cool down speed for 3 min and was just done. I tried doing legs, but again...done. I think I got through two sets before saying no. I thought maybe I'd make up for it in abs, but I went through my normal weekday round and was just done there too. Nothing in the tank left to do my ending walk on the treadmill or even the climber. I thought maybe this was just my body telling me it was tired from all of the travel and nerves, but no...

So, on the last night that hubby and the kids were in Louisiana, my older one told me she was having really bad stomach pains. She ended up getting sick...multiple times...even after they got home on Sunday afternoon. Nobody else was sick, so we thought it might be heat, eating too much, or food poisoning. Mid-afternoon Monday, my husband came home early. I thought it was just because of some people coming by for house stuff, but now he was sick. They both had crawfish on Saturday, so there was still some hope that this was food poisoning. About 4am Tuesday morning, I woke up with horrible stomach pain. I got sick a few hours later and had a fever all day. By mid afternoon, the younger one got sick. We're all doing much better today, but I guess that's why my body had enough of the working out on Monday. I'm going to take it easy today since my stomach is still cramping a bit.
Ugh, I hate those debilitating stomach bugs....so nasty. At least you should be done with it now, since you've all had it.

I had to wear a sweatshirt this morning! I was so excited that it cooled down! I threw all the windows and doors open and got it cooled down to 74 degrees by the time I left for work. It was HEAVENLY. I actually only needed the sweatshirt in the kitchen because I had the back door open and it was only 55 degrees outside, but it felt so nice after days of sweltering.

Your company is beyond disgraceful. The least they can do is put in heavy duty fans, or window a/c portable units.
There are no windows. Well...not in the warehouse bit. Imagine a 2 story Walmart with no AC. There's just no ventilation and because it's so big and your job is to literally walk from one end to the other with a big cart like they use to stock the shelves in grocery stores, gathering items for the orders as you go. So you would need ceiling fans all over the place if you wanted to circulate the air. What they NEED is air conditioning, which they don't want to pay for.

So she said the show was wonderful, but dinner afterward was not. They went to a pizza place off Times Square and she was hoping for authentic, greasy, fold it in half and bite into it, runny, cheesy pizza, but she was with a group and they ordered pizza with pineapple and ham. She was sorely disappointed.
I would have just ordered my own separately. I can't stand pineapple, so I wouldn't be able to eat that.

The like was for the show as for pizza, never get it in midtown! If you want decent pizza Brooklyn, parts of Queens, S.I. or take the Path into Joisey;)

I feel awful for wishing it was food poisoning, because in the grand scheme of things, that's worse than a stomach bug. Still, it's awful when you have a bug that goes through everyone in the house.

Yeah, chicken is one of those meats that you really want fully cooked. LOL on the meat thermometer! I wonder if she uses it. I have friends who cringe that I like most things rare, but chicken is an entirely different ball game. I got food poisoning in Las Vegas back in 2007...pretty sure it came from a burger I ate at the Rio. We'd gone to see Penn and Teller and just wanted an easy meal...a meal I'd regret! Like you, it was weeks before I was back to normal. The whole thing was just so mentally traumatizing. We had this anniversary trip planned 6 months out and my MIL was supposed to watch our older one, who was an infant at the time. She flaked out on us about a month out, so we took our baby to Vegas on our anniversary trip. My parents decided to meet us in Vegas to watch her on our anniversary, just so we could have at least one baby-free night. I treated them to Cirque du Soliel Mystere tickets the following night as a thank you. The day after our anniversary night, we spent the morning and early afternoon walking around, but I was getting those nasty chills and sweats on our way back to our hotel. I just figured I was tired. So, I went back to the room to nap with the baby, while my husband went to the casino and my parents went to dinner and the show. The extreme stomach pains started kicking in about 45 min later and it wasn't long before I became violently ill. I didn't want to disturb my parents during the show, my husband couldn't hear his phone on the casino floor, and the casino wasn't overly helpful with telling him to go back to the room. So, I was stuck in this beautiful marble and stone bathroom...repeatedly getting sick...while also trying to entertain an 11 month old. Thankfully, she wasn't mobile, so I was able to put her in the big soaker tub after her nap and line up a bunch of toys, snacks and a bottle. I wasn't 100% when it was time to fly home, so that was a stressful as well.

That sounds absolutely awful. Flying when you have stomach issues is the worst.

I like my MIL (outside of the fact she loves to talk over me), but her food sanitation skills are non. Whenever we go over for Christmas, she serves this massive turkey for Christmas dinner. There's never enough in her room in her fridge, so she keeps in the oven--for days. I never eat turkey after the first time it's served, even though she serves it for dinner the next few nights. What kills me is she acts like I am a prima donna for not eating it.

Your wife looked like she was really enjoying herself. I should look for something like this nearby.

It seems like this type of weather is becoming more prevalent over there. They might want to reconsider the A/C before something really egregious happens.
