Well, we did it! There are canines in our house again. We went into this thinking we'd come home with dogs in the 6 month to 1.5 year age range, but we wound up falling for what I refer to as "puppy puppies." I'm kind of surprised since we were more smitten with slightly older dogs on our last few shelter visits. It's also going to be a while before either one is a good walking companion; however, I'm still exhausted from getting them out in the back yard in these early housebreaking stages.
The younger one (9 wks) was listed as a shepherd mix, but I see a lot of Black Lab in her. She was part of a litter of 15 and some of the other puppies from the litter looked "shepherdish,," so that may be the other dominant breed in her makeup. One of her littermates had more of a German Shepherd looking coat, but crystal blue eyes...so who knows. She is everything you'd associate with having a young puppy...the good and the bad. Still, she's around the age that our last dog was when we adopted her and just like that dog, I see signs that she's picking up on things that will eventually make her a good adult dog.
The older dog is estimated to be 3 months old. She was also listed as a shepherd mix, but I think that any shepherd in her would be Australian Shepherd. I also see some Border Collie in her. In fact, while some of it may be age, she seems to have some of that intelligence you'd associate with a Border Collie. It made me cry a bit, but she has some of the same quirky habits and preferences of our last dog...as well as a few new ones...like hanging out on the bottom shelf of the coffee table.
Now to get the kids used to having puppies!
