Wonders of life to be gutted...

Know where is the logic to this? I guess technically it is better than just having the building sit empty without any use at all, but why not do something with the pavilion that everyone can enjoy? They already have two large areas for private functions ... they don't need more. Who in there right mind would pay lots of money to spend time in an old, unused building? This pavilion used to be great, and it was educational. Why was it closed in the first place?

Probably because not alot of people went to see it, so they made the pavillion open at peak times only.

I read in the Unofficial Guide that a pharmacutical company sponsored it and now that there budgets are cut back they no longer do and they can't find a new sponsor.

It still doesn't make sense. Even if not many people went to visit it, it was better than having it sit around and rust. At least let the people that went get enjoyment out of it rather than have no one get any enjoyment at all.

Wonders Of Life was closed the first two trips we made to WDW but we had read alot about it and really wanted to see it. My wife is a lab tech and was really anxious to see Body Wars. Well, lo and behold it was actually open during our third trip this past December and we were finally able to experience Body Wars and Cranium Command. It kills me to say it but...we were very disappointed. Both attractions are a great idea they just need some major updating. I mean, come on, Hans and Frans? John Lovitz? I thought we were on the Back To The Future ride at Universal and had been zapped back to 1986! It really won't bother me at all if they gut it but I hate to see it turned into a convention center. I would rather see it updated or just put some new attractions in it. Heck, they could even move Soarin' in there and relieve the horrible congestion in The Land, or maybe they could put the LAL monuments in it and then stick the wand on top of the building.

This is disheartening... I had hoped it would be open this Christmas time so I could take a visit, now that I am going to be a Florida resident... ah well. If it's true, I understand, but it is hard to cope...

I was there last year, and from some strange reason the pavillion was open. I had never seen Cranium Command, so I took this as my one chance, while I had been on Body Wars back in the 80's. The building was EMPTY, ok maybe a handful of people. The interior looked run down (by disney standards...dull painting/showing wear and tear), and the food places had all but vanished. It was really sad. Cranuim Command was dated as well.
It would be nice to see an attraction for EPCOT needs more TLC, even add in Kitchen Cabaret or some sort of health ride but futuristic. While I LOVE Nemo and friends, it does not fit in the over all theme of Future World.
Are there that many large functions, that another private events space is needed?

The only part of this that I see as a bad thing is the convention area part. Wonders of life NEEDED to go, or be gutted and start from scratch. Body wars was terrible, the whole place was out dated, it was just a mess. The only way I am ok with them using the area for conventions is if its so they can move forward with imagination and the new world showcase ride. And when they are done with that then get to work on WOL.

WOL in its current form is not worth reopening to the public in my honest opinion. While it was a stellar pavilion when it opened, it was not updated and the stuff near the end that were in some exhibits of cutting edge health care have been in place for many years. Body Wars and Cranium Command were the only two remaining saving graces, and even they were incredibly dated and needed an update. I would even classify the pavilion as 'bad show' when it was open to guests for a short period last year. Not because of peeling paint or poor maintenance but because half of the pavilion was behind walls and the other half was left in the 80's.

I am very disheartened though to hear that it may simply become another convention space area. I can't believe there are that many conventions at Epcot within a given amount of time that both World Showplace and this would need to be used, but what do I know. Hopefully, if true, this is a temporary measure until something worthwhile for everyday guests comes to fruition. If there are plans to use the exisiting pavilion for a new attraction but the time is just not quite right, then I wouldn't have a problem of them using it in the meantime for conventions. It would make sense to use it for something and make some $$ in the meantime. If this is the long term solution though, I'd be very disappointed. An updated pavilion about health and the human body is something I would absolutely love to see come back. But if left without updates, WOL being closed in its current form is better than being open imho.

Please don't elaborate on things you're not aware of. Yes, there IS a great need for more private space. Does that mean an attraction area should be taken for that space? Probably not. But there IS a great need for more space.

If you had any idea how much money is brought in from conventions and catering, and how much of that went back into the parks, you'd be asking for convention space EVERYWHERE.

Just curious, what types of things happen in those private events? Are they private groups using the attractions, or private groups having seminars, or what? I just never really thought about private groups renting space inside the theme parks and had figured that all happened at the resorts.

Sure... Lots of things. Here are the most popular:
1.) Banquet Space (this would be an event where people are there strictly to enjoy THAT particular space for a certain period of time) Example: A private dinner for 1000 people.
2.) Special Event Space (this would be for a party, like say a birthday or an awards banquet) Example: Birthday party
3.) Meeting Space (WoL works well because it's one self-contained building inside a theme park, that has multiple rooms in it's self, stages, food and beverage kitchens, and activities to keep people busy between meetings). Example: Company Leadership Seminar
4.) All day event space (for groups that want to play in the park, but have a centralized space where they can come anytime and grab snacks, drinks and mix and mingle) Example: Boy Scouts of America is bringing 100 troops and wants that kind of space for them to stop in throughout the day whenever they please.

There are other options too, but those are a few reasons why it's a prime location.

It's also important to remember that many times, meeting planners are looking for something new and exciting. What's more exciting than holding your event IN a theme park. That's why you see spaces like the Main Salon at the living seas, Millenium Showplace, Odyssea and WoL in Epcot. And don't forget, there's also a lot of meeting space at MGM too.

Check out http://www.disneyleisuregroups.com/ or http://www.disneymeetings.com/ and see what kind of things there are.

I don't understand part of the rumor that it will be used as a special events palce.

If it's true, why would they need another area for those events. They already use the old Odyssey Restaurant and Millenium Village.

It's not a rumor, it's been used for special events for the past 3 years. As far as why, the current reasons are that
1.) There's a lack of in-park space right now. There are groups that get turned away because there is no in-park space available on quite a few dates.
2.) It's not being used as an attraction, so might as well use it to make $$$
3.) It's an easy location to convert, meaning you can easily move things around to make more/less space.

I'm glad I rode Cranium Command and Body Wars as many times as I did. They will live on in good company with all the other extinct attractions.

R.I.P.
Cranium Command
(Buzzy, General Knowledge, and the rest of the crew)
&
Body Wars
(Dr. Lair and Captain Braddock)

Thank You!
You were fun attractions and I hope your domolition is quick and painless.

P.S.
I think the pavilion did need to change, but I really want it to be something else besides private functions. The following quote is a sweet idea, but only realtiy in the minds of us Disney fanatics.

Yes.. with CoP as a prequil(sp?). Better Living For Tomorrow Through Technology. Combine the CoP and Horzons into a single ride, bring in the Innoventions "House of the Future" as a sponsor and there it is!
