Woman hurt in boat accident in WDW 4/27/2010

The incident report dates it on 4/22/10.

The thing that gets me is that they warn you to "stay away from boat traffic" when they brief you on renting these boats. A ferry can't turn on a dime like those crafts can. Disney cannot be at fault for this one.

"He stated that he believed the ferry was going to move away for him and his wife"....

Ok, I hope the woman is alright, however it sounds like the woman's husband or whoever was driving what I am assuming is one of the small Sea Raycer boats was completely ignorant if they thought that one of the ferry's could maneuver better and quicker than he could. I mean who aims for a large object like this with the idea that "oh, he will move". People like this are why it won't be long before the rest of us can't enjoy renting a boat at WDW.

It sounds like it was an awful accident. :(

It doesn't seem like the ferry captain is to blame.
I tend to agree that they aren't at fault, because it's common knowledge that if you're driving a big truck it can't turn at the same speed a toyota prius can so the same would be true for a boat in water...

I know that what I am about to say doesn't contribute to the thread but his post sums up what I was thinking exactly so I'll say it.

This.

Yes, it also surprises me that the driver thought the ferry would move for him and his wife. I mean.... it is a ferry! :brick:

I hope she is fine.

This reminds me of Austin Powers 2 when the large asphalt roller is heading towards the guy in the hallway and he is like ..."stop.....(roller rolls to within 10 feet of him.....stop!!!.....within 5 feet.....STOP!!!!!!!...1 foot....Awwwhhhhh!!!!!"

How fast are the ferry's? 5 MPH? Even?

I know this is wrong, but here is an image of them just before the ferry pulled away from the dock...

-He told investigators that he saw the large ferry boat and thought it was moving away from their small boat, but then realized it was coming at them and was very close.-

Wow! Depth perception problem? This story just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

I rented these before and as of last fall they were still only letting 1 adult-size person to be in the boat. Why was there 2 adults in it? It certainly isn't roomy enough for 2.

I worked in Watercraft Transportation during my second WDW College Program, and was captain of the Launch boats between Grand Floridian, Polynesian and Magic Kingdom.

First, there is no way the captain is responsible for this. None. More than likely, he blew his horn repeatedly when he saw the sea race approaching his bow (front), and the driver of the sea racer ignored his warnings.

Second, sea racers approaching the Ferry's and Launch craft is an every day occurrence, and when someone gets to close we were to call in to Lake Patrol (White shirt cast members in really fast boats) and they were to escort the reckless boat back to shore.

I am 98% sure I remember William Green, the captain mentioned in the article, from my internship.

That skipper is a pro/expert/veteran of the Seven Seas Lagoon....he knows it inside and out.

Prayers for the family
