Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I originally posted it as a joke because nobody had seen the Mario movie yet, I was just aware of the characters from a 2007 video game. But now that the Mario movie is out, and the character is in there, and the movie is hugely popular, the context is much different.

The timing is unfortunate, but it’s actually way more like a Galaxy Luma than the movie’s nihilist. I’m just being a grumpy curmudgeon that the general populace sees the movie as the precedent and not the actual source material.

Anyways, in the grand scheme of a Jeffrey Katzenburg copy, this seems poorly coincidental than actual intent. Feedback on early Frozen was also that the characters were indistinguishable from Rapunzel.

People please....

If you really think the wishing star in Wish is too similar to Lumas in Super Mario, well then consider it an homage and not ripping off the design. It could be some of the artist that worked on Wish were Super Mario Galaxy fans and weren't even aware of the Super Mario Bros movie being created, we don't know.

Also wasn't it once said, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"....

I like the style in theory, I just think it's poorly executed. It looks low-budget to me.
At least from what I see in the trailer, the goat looks strangely out of place. Especially when you first see him when they are looking up at the star.

I don’t understand the complaints of the different animation styles…correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression this was sort of an homage to 100 years of Disney animation
Unfortunately since this is the teaser trailer, all we really have to go by is the art and animation style. I know a lot of people loved into the spiderverse and the last wish. I personally wasn't a fan of those animation styles. That doesn't make the films bad. Once the full story trailer is out, it will be a bit easier to judge. As of now, the animation looks a bit off to me as well. And the song that was playing didn't hook me either.

That's funny because that's the part I like the best haha.

In that shot, I say "oh wow that's neat, they're trying something super different."
That's just it, everyones opinion is different. That scene in full context might end up being pretty cool. Heck, the soundtrack might be great too. But that one song was just mediocre to me. All we can judge is what's been put before us. If you love it, great. If not, that's great too. I don't think Disney has earned back the, "I don't care I'm going to see it no matter what." Attitude. But that might just be me.

My concern is that if "Wish" fails due to people disliking the animation, Disney will just try to play it safe with the Frozen/Tangled style instead of working to improve upon the animation.

I personally think the Wish animation looks pretty good. Looks much better when viewed in full screen versus when you watch on your phone.

I seriously wonder if the marketing team was left completely in the dark on Hans being a villain. The poster and the toy lines suggest they never saw the movie.
Before I saw the movie I assumed that Hans would end up with Elsa by the time the movie ended. Maybe it's good if the marketing team was left in the dark — it helped preserve the twist.

Yeah, I watched the teaser on my HD TV and the animation actually looked better compared to seeing it on a phone or a computer (due to Youtube's quality not being up to standards). I remember people were annoyed at seeing Youtube's uploads of The Batman trailers due to not doing the film's quality justice compared to other uploads where it had better quality.

The song has a very Frozen feel to it. Kind of Broadway musical-like. It's not a bad thing but it isn't original sounding.
Then again some of the same crew and team members from Frozen are working on this film. If anything, the first performance of the song at D23 gained positive reception.

Yeah, you don't notice the details in a highly compressed youtube detail. It should be fun to see.

The Youtube uploads of The Batman comes to mind since Youtube's compression didn't make some of the action-oriented moments stick out compared to other websites. So hearing people saying that "Wish" looks low-budget due to the different art style probably didn't see how it was suppose to appear in theaters (which modern HD TVs manage to maintain).

The color palette is very Frozen-y to me. Why is everything blue?

You guys have your rights to have your own opinions, but goodness gracious, such negativity! Look, I know some of us grew up with the Disney Renaissance movies in the 90s and we miss Disney doing hand drawn animation, I do too, but honestly, I like what I’m seeing from the animation for Wish. I love the blend of 2D and 3D animation. It reminds me of their Oscar winning shorts Paperman and Feast. It’s about time Disney is doing a hybrid animated film. I understand you guys don’t like it, but I’m very excited for this, and this gives me hope that Disney stepping the right direction.
