Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

The art style is much better than previous efforts. They seem to be doing a 2D-3D feel like certain sequences in Puss N' Boots Last Wish. I like this look. It is like a throwback to hand drawn but not really hand drawn cells.

Why is the animation so bad? It looks like Disney Junior.

And I'm a little bit shocked after the success of Super Mario Bros. that they left the star that's a DIRECT ripoff of the Luma from Super Mario Galaxy.

I'm getting Adventure Time vibes from that star design myself. Well, why not? Disney copied the bean-mouth design from Steven Universe for Seeing Red.

Are we really trying to turn Super Mario Galaxy's Lumas and The Stars from "Wish" into a reverse "The Lion King "ripped-off" Kimba the White Lion" online debate? Just because both characters looks similar doesn't mean they are coping and/or ripping them off. And yes I'm aware both Leo/Kimba and Simba are very different.

Also it was Pixar that worked on Turning Red and wasn't by Disney Animation Studios.

I put the trailer on and my daughter walked in and said, oh is this the new trailer? Then when the star came on, she goes, oh so they ripped of Luma from Mario? Even if it was unintentional, you would think someone at the mouse house would have said, yea, maybe we should change that up a bit more. But maybe since no one at Disney thought Mario was a big deal, they figured no one would notice.

Kimba and Simba look nothing alike. And the reason their names sound alike is due to screwy translations between Swahili, Japanese, and English.

The star and Luma are identical.

I know that and I wasn't saying both characters looked alike compared to years of heated debate with the anime/manga and western animation community. I'm saying that both characters are completely different and from two different works. But that's another can of worms.

Or we could just wait until more information is revealed in the coming months and a future "Art of" book that goes behind the scenes and evolution of the film's characters.

Wait for what information? Them to say, oh yea we knew it looked just like the star from Mario. Or even admit it? I think not. It's not really relevant as to how it evolved. Because it ended up extremely similar and they obviously didn't change it. Will it matter in the long run? Probably not. But it was pretty obvious for anyone paying attention.

Fact of the matter is that Mario has been an absolutely massive global hit, and the Doomsday luma in it was one of the funniest things in it.

The general population will absolutely be making comparisons to the luma in Mario Brothers saying it looks just like the Doomsday luma.

I feel like the bad marketing for Frozen may have inadvertently helped it's word of mouth. Expectations were so low that when the movie turned out to be pretty good, it left people leaving the theater saying "wow, I wasn't expecting that!" instead of "It was good, but didn't live up to the hype."

I seriously wonder if the marketing team was left completely in the dark on Hans being a villain. The poster and the toy lines suggest they never saw the movie.

Why are we rehashing this again exactly? Not you, but the Mario Bros movie nor this trailer suddenly 'uncovered' this.
I originally posted it as a joke because nobody had seen the Mario movie yet, I was just aware of the characters from a 2007 video game. But now that the Mario movie is out, and the character is in there, and the movie is hugely popular, the context is much different.

This has now jumped to one of my most anticipated films of the year…loved the trailer

I don’t understand the complaints of the different animation styles…correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression this was sort of an homage to 100 years of Disney animation…so with that would be a 100 years of different animation styles

I like the style in theory, I just think it's poorly executed. It looks low-budget to me.
