Windows Vista Are You Geting It

I haven't used IE6 since june of '06. I can't say I missed it at all. IE7, even the beta version that came with Vista, ran almost flawlessly, the one exception being that it crashes with too many tabs up, but that is close to thirty.
I debated putting the beta of Vista on my machine at home but decided against it. I love testing beta software but I am a little leery of testing an operating system. The lat operating system I beta tested was Windows 2000. That OS required a full system reformat to be removed. If I had multiple systems running I would have installed Vista it in a heart beat but I currently only have 1 system at my house and there was no way I was sticking it on my work PC.

I absolutely love IE7. The tabbed browsing it great. I am surprised it took Microsoft so long to add this feature but I am happy that it is finally here.

Microsoft is sending me a Vista Business retail licensed DVD (3 weeks late *sigh*, thru the developer network) ... and I plan on upgrading it to Vista Ultimate.

I am going to get another hard drive though... and just run and install Vista in dual boot. So that way I still have my XP Pro and other stuff. I'll run in dual boot till Vista has cleared an SP1 release.

No one (at Microsoft) has yet explained to me about x32, x64, and x86 bit though (are they sending me both versions? when I do the install.. can I just select x64 version? different DVDs, one for regular, one for 64?). My dual core can run x64bit and x32... and I'd like to toy with the 64bit version of Vista though, just to really see how secure it is, and to toy with the drivers. Yet, no one at the Microsoft Delevoper forums can give me any answers. GrrRRrr!!!

I havent even gotten it... and already I am irritated with it. :fork: :o

EDIT: Funny... I just posted this.. and then checked the developer forums.. and got this message:

btw I just confirmed with my team that we are only shipping the 32 bit version of Vista.

Sorry guys if you had your heart set on having both.

Thanks again,
Mark

*sigh* sooo much for putting Vista 64 thru the paces *pouts* :(

I could've gotten the 64-bit Vista from MSDN. ;) It's out there, you just need to know where to get it.

x64 is the 64-bit version of Windows, and requires a processor with 64-bit extensions, which aren't terribly hard to find these days. The x86 version of Windows is the 32-bit version, the one that most people run.

I'm running Vista Ultimate at work now. I'm hoping to be getting another new laptop to replace this one, which will mean I get to install Ultimate again, and Office 2007, etc. The only thing I don't have right now, other than off-the-wall progams I like to use, is anti-virus software.

I've had no problems with IE7, except for the Microsoft Partner website, which would only take IE6 for a while. Other than that, no problems at all with it, and I have been using it since Beta 1.

I made the mistake of not getting an xp reinstall disc, so a reformat and partitioning wasn't an option, so I went ahead and took the chance, and I regretted it at first when netgear wouldn't release vista drivers for my internal wifi card. I then bought a buffalo router (best thing besides my computer I have ever bought tech wise) which is configured using a web browser. It's worked like a charm ever since. I bought another hard drive and
used an old dell xp reinstall disc I found, and somehow it activated fine.... I use XP more now just because gaming is faster on it and the boot time is more acceptable. When I get vista I'll probably get another hard drive and partition it 50/50 with XP and Vista on it, so I can choose what to boot into without ripping my case open every time I want to switch OSs.

From what I hear... since I am getting x32 from MSDN... I can use the same retail license on x64. Because the retail boxes of Vista Business come with x32 & 64. So, yeah... I can probally d-load x64... and just punch in my license... and everything will be kosher.

I ran the Beta (one of the 5000s) for about two days maybe two or three months ago. That was long enough. It's rubbish, really. Sure, it might be a little easier to find things and it's prettier and there are widgets, but other than that, it's rubbish. If you want pretty, download a cool theme; if you want widgets get OS X or Yahoo Widgets; if you can't find things, then you should read a book about Windows XP, not upgrade to a different OS.

The only real reason to get Vista is if you're a gamer (Vista will be the sole PC platform for DirectX 10 games). Don't waste your money. Stick with XP or switch to Linux or something. I don't see why they feel the need to change operating systems every five years or so. How about you make a decent one and stick with it, Microsoft, and maybe patch it once in a while, and make the functionality modular. How about that.

Note: I am aware of the more significant, low-level changes, but those are not things that 90% of the computer users will notice.

The laptop I bought a few months ago from Dell claims to be Vista compatible but with only 1 gig of RAM that is shared with the video I seriously doubt that I will go to Vista unless I add more RAM and go to an external video card set-up. I was hoping to sink about $2500 into a new desktop but kids and bills kept eating into the savings account I had earmarked for it so I settled for the laptop. Thanks to the IT guy at work I was able to get one of Dell's refurbs so I got a $1200 lap top for about $700. It works fine for what I needed at the moment which was basically something to download pictures on and editing and playing the music for my daughter's karate demo team but it is a little lacking in the gaming department. Hopefully I will build the overclocked beast of a gaming rig before Christmas this year.

So with Vista's release upon us, anyone have any updates. I changed my mind, looks I will be trying Vista out, but I'm still going to jump on Leopard as soon as it's released. Does anyone know if its worth it at all? I'm thinking XP will be obsolete with in a couple of years or so.

A word and A number
Directx 10

That being said, the computer I am building for someone I know is getting Vista Home Premium, I'm slightly jealous because I can't afford Vista for a while....

Two more numbers.....

Minimum cost of a video card that will run DriectX 10 - $400.

Number of games currently using DirectX 10 - 0

DirectX 10 is definitely the future but the future wont be here for a few more months. I am waiting for ATI to release their DirectX 10 cards so the price comes down on the Nvidia ones.

I am totally happy and comfortable with XP. I have had no major issues with XP. I won't change to Vista unless it comes loaded in a new computer.

The release of Vista didn't have the normal hoopla that we've seen in other releases...remember the release of Windows 95 was (almost) as popular as the second coming of Christ. Vista was released with barely a whimper.

True, but im sure we will be seeing Directx 10 supported cards and games within the next year. Why not bite the bullet and get Vista now? Crysis, which is set for release this year has Directx10 support.

It screams on my machine... nice and slick... running with dual boot XP... not willing to transfer over to Vista 100% though.

Aero interface.... meh... sure its eye candy... but whatever. *shrug*

Love the Widgets on the desktop.

NVIDIA released a new driver for the 7900 GTX (running on Vista) this past weekend.. and it rocks! Much more stable and runs faster.

See screen shots

Looks like that is gonna take some getting used to.

I can get it for free through LSU. How can I have two operating systems?
