yeah I guess your right.

wifi in the parks with an internal website would be neat. They could put all kinds of good information out to visitors. Wait times, closures, weather bulletins, it would be great!

There's an open connection in MK by Casey's. BUT when you open the web, you need to login with a user name and password. The homepage it takes you to says it's for Disney business partners. It used to just be open but I presume WDW found out people were using it.

If this is true and if it stays open, it'll be the first in awhile that's worked. I doubt it'll stay free and open long though. :(

Exactly! You get what you pay for. Always bugs me when people say, well motel 6 has it free. Well then sir, go stay at the luxurious motel 6 and get off this crappy disney property lol.

Well if you get what you pay for..then why isnt the Internet Free. Its an obvious fact that you are paying alot more for a disney resort than motel 6.

Interesting article with a little more about this, from StitchKingdom

http://www.stitchkingdom.com/2009/10/17/walt-disney-world-begins-offering-free-wifi-internet-access/

Several months ago, reports of the WiFi near the Beach Club lobby was open to the public as opposed to the traditional means of charging for it. While some speculated that it must have been in error and would only be temporary, recent reports not only confirm it’s still available in the common areas at the resort, but that resort staff has confirmed it was an intentional, permanent change in policy.
This has now appeared to carry over to other Convention resorts (which all offer WiFi in public areas such as the lobby and pool areas) as we have seen reports that the Contemporary Resort also makes WiFi available at no charge.
Taking it even a step further, multiple reports (and iPhone screenshots) have confirmed that there is free WiFi available inside Innoventions East at Epcot (see photo, courtesy of @jeff318).
There have also been reported free WiFi spots in other parks, such as near City Hall in the Magic Kingdom.
Note that this does not affect the wired internet available inside the resort guest rooms. Non-DVC guests will still be charged to access the internet from inside their rooms.
It is also worth noting that you may occasionally see an open network for TWDC Guests. While you will be able to connect to the network, chances are it will require a login as it’s intended for Cast Members and their direct guests only.

So who wants to bet that Disney secures them now that you put it on the internet?

Attractions tweeted that on like Friday, and i confirmed it on saturday... They may be looking at offering wifi for cell / iPod Touch at the parks, esp since there are so many apps for iPhones and iPod Touch... and being un secured disney can sort of monitor where the bandwidth is going theoretically.

That is reallya great deal. But why does the internet in the resorts cost $10 a 24hour period. Even the cheapest Motel 6's have Free Internet now.

This isn't just a Disney thing. In my travels I have often found bigger more expensive hotels charge for Internet access, but smaller cheaper hotels do not.

Not old, just vintage.
Stupid question alert:

Why do we need wi-fi hot spots in the parks? I understand the allure of free wi-fi in hotel lobbys. Heck, in July this year I was one of about 100 people camped out in the Beach Club lobby with my laptop every night. However, why is there such excitement over the addition of it in the parks? Do that many people use their laptops in the parks? I frequently access the internet while in the parks but I do it through my BB. I understand the allure of getting stuff for free from Disney (a totally rare occurrence!) but I feel like I am missing something here....

People who have an iPod Touch can't use the internet or any internet-required apps (like wait times or whatever) without an open hot spot. Not many people are bringing full laptops but many devices can connect to the internet either to save on cellular data plan rates, or that don't use a cell connection. Also, international travelers often have to pay very expensive data roaming charges to connect via cellular connection on their mobile phone whereas a hot spot is free.

With an open hot spot, people can tweet, email, use apps, check wait times, book reservations, look up menus, mobile blog post, upload a pic to flickr, do a live report to a website (such as this one or others), check weather, check flight delays - you name it. Various things they might want to do in park that's accomplished easy and efficiently if you have a net connection.

There are palm pilots, Apple iPod touch, and various cell phones that have WiFi chips in them...The reason for Cell phones is for large data transfers, and times when cell signal is too weak for data transfer.
