Why is Spectromagic so Touching?!

Ok I have a question regarding the Spectro-men at the beginning of the parade...

When did they switch from the "doll face" looking ones that used to be in their place? My most recent trip just a few weeks ago was the first time I noticed it. Now, I never was crazy about the old ones, but now I miss them! The new human faced guys have no facial expression whatsoever and it just looks like they're miserable and don't want to be there! I don't know if its supposed to be like that but I hate it!

:sohappy:Def the music and memories for me growing up as a kid. I have SpectroMagic ( and Wishes) downloaded on my ipod, so if I'm feeling sentimental, I just break it out and listen to it

I have to agree with this! The music takes me back to my childhood. I love popping in the cd or listening it to it on my iPod...SpectroMagic and Illuminations have such great scores!!

In agreement that there is something definitively magical about Disney music...that's partially why I find BPB so disappointing. Kool and the Gang doesn't exactly stir magically feelings of my childhood for me (or do they ).

Also, there's a surefire way to get me bawling during a Disney parade or fireworks show...have Julie Andrews do the narration! It's embarrassing, but the woman just embodies "Disney magic" for me, and when I first saw Remember...Dreams Come True in Disneyland a few years back, I was literally bawling my eyes out (as quietly as I could, because I was taping).

Back to Spectro, I know that it is outdated technologically compared to parks across the globe, but it is a must-do for me on every trip, and while I would welcome a new nighttime parade (or the return of a new and improved MSEP, which was great to see in DCA but really belongs in MK, IMO), I would definitely miss it.

Main Street Electrical Parade was great but Spectro is my all time fav.

I agree with everyone...it is most definately the music that makes it. I mean, it starts with "On this magic night". The floats, costumes and characters are really amazing but the music is touching. Think about it this way...imagine they showed the parade with "Zipadee-doo-dah" as the music....may not have the same affect.

But hands down, Spectro rocks. I will be seeing it on the 30th when it is back and running and I cannot wait!!!!

I'll be in Disney tonight!!!!! AHHH!!:sohappy:

I think for me, it's the sheer spectacle of it, all those lights...! I love it when I'm near someone who is seeing it for the first time, the amazement on their faces!

Where else would you find anything like that except at Disney? It really is a jaw dropping sight the first time you see the floats come round the bend!:D

When I went to Disney during Spring Break.. It was the same. I miss the masks! Its sad, because like you mentioned.. It seems like the performers are not having fun. Their just " there "..

I looked up Spectromagic on youtube and I think ive figured it out. First of all -- that music. In one of the videos I watched the cameraman says "here we go buddy!" as that music starts and the lights go out -- granted it was just the people selling the lightup necklaces, etc. but still.

Second, watching it brings back a great memory of watching the parade with my parents on Main Street and it was a night not too hot -- just perfect.

Being a guy whose supposed to be "macho", I've often wondered what it was about Spectro that always makes me tear up when the lights go out and the music starts. I'm glad to find out that I'm not alone.

I had a feeling I wasn't the only one who cried with every showing of Spectromagic. I love watching it around the hub and the anticipation of it coming our way. The moment the lights turn out is unlike anything else.

I can't explain it but I have an emotional attachment to it.

I agree with how moving and amazing this show is.

I heard the music to Spectromagic in mp3 perhaps a dozen times before watching the actual parade, and I have to admit I was not that excited to see it in person based on that audio alone.

Imagine my surprise, and the complete turnaround of my opinion, upon seeing the first sparkly floats appear, set to that LOUD, trumpet-y Spectromagic theme! I was floored!

Just goes to show you that you should never base your opinion of any show or attraction on what you see or hear online. Live is always best!

I listen to my mp3s of the music in a whole different way now.

I always get chills when the lights all go out, in preparation for the parade itself.

My absolute favourite float is the Fantasia one with the horses - it's breathtaking!

I never really saw it myself. It's an alright show but it does nothing for me - kind of like the electrical water pagent (although if they change the midi soundtrack I might like it a little more)

Spectromagic is very special and it has that same sentimental effect on me too, no matter how many times I've seen it. When the lights first go out I get goosebumps!! I think it's just the feeling you get from the music and the beauty of the lights and characters and thinking to yourself--wow, here I am really sitting in Magic Kingdom at night with all these other people who love this like I do and are all enjoying it together. It's such a wonderful thing to share with friends and family.

Don't watch the Blake Edwards film she made in 1981 (I can't even type the name here). It's a satirical comedy, but she show her, uh, hills that are alive.

J/K; she's my favorite Disney narrator too, even over Jiminy Cricket.
