Why did they not make the Castle a walkthrough? And will they ever?

Always wondered why Cinderella's Castle is never used as a walkthrough. Since it was done at Disneyland I wonder why it wasn't incorporated right from the beginning at WDW. They could use the same sort of storytelling as Sleeping Beauty's Castle. I would imagine the Castle would look beautiful on the inside. In your opinion will they ever open it up like that as a walkthrough attraction?

The Cindy castle has a restaurant and the Dream Suite and I don't think there's enough room to fit a complete walk-through in it now. I'm pretty sure they had a chance to. Just didn't do it.

They needed the space for Walt's freezer!

The best that they were able to do in the past several years was a store that sold nice little chachkies and swords. The mosaic is beautiful, but the castle walkway is a bit of a waste of space for the average guest today.

As far as I know, they didn't because they though having a restaurant was a better idea at the time. Disneyland had a tiny walk through, WDW would have a huge grand restaurant. Of course, hardly any of the visitors that come to the Kingdom actually get to eat at or see that restaurant so I'm not sure if I agree with the logic. (Although a lot of the logic used in designing the original MK is a bit odd -that's a different topic though) Given how large the castle is I'm fairly confident that with some creative rearranging a walk through similar to California's could be created in and around the outside turrets and perhaps a little bit of the restaurant space. Disneyland's castle wasn't designed for a walkthrough either. However, given the low capacity it would have and modern ADA regulations I don't think there's a chance of it ever actually happening. The only way it would ever really happen is if they removed CRT and I don't see that happening.

Its mostly steel, concrete, fiberglass, plastic, and plaster other than Stefans, phone operators room, a dressing room, and Utilidor access. Sorry, I'm living in the past ... Stefans aka Royal Table and phone operators room aka Dream Suite.

The missile silos prevent a lot of the castle areas from being open to the public.

I went to WDW three times before I knew that there was a restaurant in the castle...

The mosaic IS the walkthrough attraction.

The MK was conceived as the improved version of DL: bigger, better and - often overlooked - more mature in taste.
DL's castle tells the story of Sleeping Beauty in a series of small miniature tableaux. The MK's castle tells the story of that other classic princess, Cinderella, in a series of grand mosaics. Overwhelmingly beautiful, large-scale, spectacular even. And with great capacity, without any crowd problems - there is no such thing as one kid blocking the entire view or keeping up twenty people.

It is splendour like the gorgeous mosaic that makes the MK the greatest park ever build. Sheer unmitigated magic.

Sure they could have at one point if they engineered it for that. But they didn't. They'd never go back on that.

BBB -> $$$
CRT -> $$$

Walkthrough -> No $$$ Or $$ or $

I suspect it was also made as a business decision back in the day as well. People pay top dollar for the ability to eat up inside the Castle (or shop/BBB). They knew that and took advantage of the money-making opportunity. Then still created the mosaic (which agreed...is amazing) to tell a short story during a mini walk through.

Disneyland's castle isn't large enough for a huge merchandise or dining experience. Thus a walkthrough works just fine.
