Why California is the TRUE Theme Park Capital of the World.

I hate to burst your bubble but it was the Marriott Courtyard on SW Oak, one block south of Burnside. A perfectly fine property, but nothing special obviously.

Would it mend my shattered reputation if I told you I stayed at The Dossier Hotel in Portland in 2016?

Your reputation is still sterling. I'm trying to decide between the Dossier, Sentinel or Vintage for a summer Portlandia visit this year. I would stay at The Nines, but the memories of the long gone Meier & Frank department store in that grand building would be too painful, even worth missing out on the SPG points I'd earn there.

No one ever needs to apologize for a Marriott Courtyard stay. They do good work. And when I was suddenly stranded in Chicago for a day after a horrifically messy O'hare airport shutdown, the beautiful angels running the Marriott Courtyard in Schaumburg, Illinois absolutely saved my life. That hotel 10 miles from O'hare was the only room available in all of Chicagoland, and when I showed up at that Courtyard that rainy night in a pirated unlicensed taxi that charged me $150 (cash) to get there, without luggage that remained lost for 32 more days, those sympathetic Courtyard employees comped me a full toiletry kit, two bags of peanut M&M's and a half bottle of Merlot to take to my room. I have never been more thankful for humanity than that night at the Schaumburg Courtyard. Also, I have never flown American Airlines ever again and I never will.

I was surprised to find that the Portland Courtyard Marriott is connected to a very trendy little comfort food spot populated all day by a hipsterish looking crowd. It's called The Original Dinerant right on the corner of SW Oak and SW 6th. @PacNWTigger have you eaten there?

Ha! I have! I had dinner there a couple years ago. Fun place, surprisingly good cocktails.

I just love Portland! It really is like Disneyland because the citizens sort of play these bizarre characters where they take the most mundane of tasks very seriously; like staring intently as they make little designs in the foam on a latte', or carefully choosing an artisanal pickle out of a big jar and placing it gently next to your deli sandwich, or earnestly and slowly pouring a drizzle of essential oil into a footbath at a day spa. They are hilarious people to observe and interact with! Also, it's a great city with stunning beauty.

One of my favorite lunch places!! I've heard they have a great happy hour too. One of the pitfalls is that I don't get "working lunches". Their drink menu looks super tasty, and I'm feeling a bit parched. ;)

In five years original content will be in the minority. The castle parks were meant to be predominantly IP. Epcot was something fresh. But it’ll be the MK 2.0 with a few attractions that wouldn’t fit in a Kingdom.

This reinforces my point about the LACK OF VARIETY in Florida theme parks and the future of WDW parks. I had originally predicted a 20 year timeline for Epcot to become the Magic Kingdom, but Marni is predicting 5 years.

This is the main problem when the BIG DOGS eat the LITTLE DOGS and run all those unique, original amusement parks out of business. Now WDW is eating its own and making all the parks more uniform and less original. I'm just happy that Disney doesn't have the dominance in CA that it does in FL.

The castle parks are the most successful, so why argue with that success. EPCOT '94 was awesome in it's day, but now it's just a junkyard behind Spaceship Earth with an unjustifiable amount of brutal walking across huge open areas of concrete. With the exception of the Land boat ride, the charming World Showcase villages, the France movie, the Haunted American Adventure Mansion and the fountain playing music from The Rocketeer where Cory and Topanga kissed, it could use a massive overhaul. At this point, if it's more like The Magic Kingdom, it will still be improved.
