Why Aerosmith?

What planet were you living on in 1999? Aerosmith hasn't been the biggest band in the world since the 70s...maybe 80s, and that's if they ever were the biggest band in the world. They're music legends but were hardly the biggest band in the world in 1999.

Agreed with what others have said here. Aerosmith was the biggest band in the US in the 70s, lost it all in the early 80s due to drugs and a changing music genre, came back to be the biggest band again in the 80s with help from Run DMC, and kept that momemtum through the late 80s and 90s with hits like "Janie's Got a Gun", "What It Takes", and "Pink". I'm sure Armagedden helped with "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" in 1998 and then "Jaded" in 2001 was a HUGE HUGE hit. They're also still VERY popular in Asia....and will always be my favorite. :D

But I think it comes down to the fact that mostly EVERYONE has heard of or knows of a few Aerosmith songs. And most everyone knows Steven Tyler (even if they refer to him as Aerosmith :brick:) I don't know if the same can be said about Rolling Stones, and I'm fairly certain that it is not true for U2.

Now if only they can finish that new Studio album that they've been working on for the past 4 years so they can be relevent again...again...

RUN DMC :veryconfu in 1998. I would love to know what song that was

There was a remix of "it's Like That" in 1998 that did well

As for RnRC I like the choice of Aerosmith - I like the idea of The Rolling Stones better, but Aerosmith is just fine by me.

I'm a big hip-hop fan ....must have missed that one   EDIT: I do recall a few remixed songs, "It's like that", and "Tricky", but I think they were only big overseas.

BTW, I also think Aerosmith was a good choice, you gotta love there songs :)

As much as I enjoy Aerosmith...

Tom Petty Rock N' Roller Coaster !

Learning to Fly, Free Fallin', Running Down A Dream, You Wreck me, Won't Back Down, American Girl ... those woulda been killer songs to listen to while on a coaster.

although I know Universals rip ride rock it has running down a dream by Tom Petty , but you need to use a secret code 121 to use it. (Maybe If I don't chicken out I'll try this next month)

As far as doing a more generic rock and roll type theme, you end up with something like Rip Ride Rockit at Universal (or whatever its real name is). Not much theming, just pushing the music aspect. Or Hard Rock Park (which lasted what, a year?) Building a cohesive theme around a bunch of items that have little to tie them together usually doesn't work well.

Oh please. Universal simply chose not to theme the rollercoaster...that doesn't mean it couldn't be themed. If RNR had a choose your own music it simply can be you are off to the concert of your favorite band (giving the same-yet-different theme to the other guests in your vehicle).

And Hard Rock Park failed because a theme park in that location wasn't viable. There was no market to support it. You can't just build something and expect it to succeed. Disneyland and WDW were HUGE risks. I think it was the Disney name that got people to go...and back then there wasn't anything like it. More people visit regional parks than visit Disney, so people in general don't really care all that much about a cohesive theme.

Look at the current Tommorowland incarnation. Stitch, Monsters Inc, Space Mountain, and Carousel of Progress. Nothing much really in common there, so Tommorowland really lost its cohesive feel.

Tomorrowland seems to be the dumping ground for attractions they don't know what to do with.

I think ACDC would fit the best fit for a ride like that. The music, the personality of the band and the even lyric to their music would nail the setting.

It was the DJ Jason Nevins remix of It's Like That (released in July 1997). Worldwide, it was the 4th biggest single of 1998. And you're right, the remix did not chart in the USA.

why not Van Halen for Rock N Roller Coaster? Songs like Jump, Panama, Unchained... good stuff. I suppose you'd have to do just Diamond Dave stuff, and ignore Sammy again (like they did for Guitar Hero), but there's some good stuff there.

For the record though, I meant nothing against Aerosmith, I've seen them live a bunch of times and have every single record. I was just trying to point out that they had more than 1 #1 single. In all fairness it is cool to see a band whose debut album came almost 30 years before their first #1 single.

I think there are very few bands that can pass the "stay power" test and who have enough music to do what they have done with the audio of this ride. GNR, Van Halen, and Journey come to mind, but I don't think any of them would be better than Aerosmith, who happens to be my favorite band.

As for the OPs question, I would love to know as well. I am sure Armageddon and the (pending, due to delay) release of the Just Push Play album had something to do with it.

I kick myself now for asking this question because it's turned into another 'Aerosmith sucks, pick something better' thread. Not to sound mean, but I didn't care what people's thoughts of Aerosmith were, I wanted to know what Disney's thoughts were and why Aerosmith was chosen.

Hello .... I know  "Walk this way" was what really made Aerosmith relevant again in the mid 80's. I was referring to the claim that Run DMC had a huge hit in 98' :)

Oh please Disney, just go ahead and make a Radiohead Rock n' Roller Coaster...I think riding to Paranoid Android might just be the single greatest thing ever.

But that wouldn't work, but having a Seattle setting and making it Nirvana would be ace.

While I'm not an Aerosmith fan, I don't mind them, if they come on the radio I don't want to poke my eardrums out. And in a way, that helps to why I can understand the logic behind choosing them. There's no one band that everyone absolutely loves, so whatever band Disney were to choose, it wouldn't be everybody's first choice (which is why I always thought it would've been better to go with Spinal Tap or a fictional band, but I digress). OTOH, there aren't a lot of people that really HATE Aerosmith. Might not be your favorite band, but if you were at a wedding and "Walk This Way" came on, you might be compelled to shake that thang. And unlike a lot of popular rock bands at the time (though there are exceptions), Aerosmith is the sort of band that's more or less known for always having upbeat numbers. Even their power ballads are a lot more powerful than most other bands' power ballads; even I'll admit that "Don't Want To Miss a Thing" has more power, and isn't as corny/maudlin, as "Home Sweet Home" or "November Rain." And as others have noted, Aerosmith's synergistic relationship with Disney at the time probably didn't hurt. It was the most logical choice at the time.

Don't Miss a Thing came out in late '98 and was a worldwide number one smash hit for them. Their only number one hit actually. Nine Lives went 2x platinum in '97. To say they were not one of the biggest bands in the world in '99 is a damn joke.

^ What they said.

While some may not remember popular culture, Aerosmith was, and still is, a HUGE selling rock band, and extremely popular. Most commercial bands producing music now that might be considered "popular" will never reach the heights Aerosmith has already achieved. The fact Aerosmith had this popularity, might be, now hold on to your hats, it just might be the reason Disney, not a company to make thoughtless decisions mind you, think about that, offered a band like Aerosmith a chance to have a roller coaster named after them, and to feature several of their popular songs.

But then again, what do I know?

Pretty sure someone else pointed out that Jaded was also a number 1 hit...

And sorry, but in 1999 the music industry as a whole was far more concerned with boybands and Britney Spears than Aerosmith. I love the band but most people realize their hayday was in the 70s and 80s. Were they still popular and profitable in the late 90s...yes. Biggest band in the world? Hardly. That's pure hyperbole.
