Which moderate resort and why?

I am going at Christmas and always stay at POP. Now I want to try a moderate which will be in my budget as we are skippingi the annual August trip :( (DD is starting college in the fall and wants to spend her "final summer between HS and college at home with her friends).

So, which moderate resort would you pick and why? And are they really better than POP? Thank you.

Caribbean Beach ! Love it! :sohappy:
I always rent a car so busses/bus stop issues never effect me. Having said that, the reasons I enjoy CBR are:
> Love the tropical atmosphere
> Enjoy walking the grounds, especially walking to Port Royale
> Love the hammocks on the beaches
> It never seems loud around the grounds nor in the room
> Like hearing Illuminations from outside our room (the only loud thing hehe)
> Despite not having 4 star food, I love the selection and convenience of Port Royale
> After staying there the first time, I have never stayed at another Moderate because I have had no reason and no desire. CBR has been berry, berry good to me.... :D

Just my point of view... :)

I have stayed at both POR and CBR and will be staying at CBR again this October. I have also stayed a All-Star Music. We won't go back to a value resort again. We love both POR and CBR. We really liked POR on our Honeymoon, but with kids we find that CBR is a little better. I think the theming is a little better at CBR and both have been refurbed now, so the rooms are comparable. The pools is a bit better at CBR for kids. However, Boatwright's is a better restaurant than Shutters.

Having said that, I don't think you can go wrong with either place. Of course, if I had my choice and money wasn't an issue, I'd stay at the Polynesian. :p

Wow. With all the people on here that love POR, it seems pretty popular. I was planning on staying there for my honeymoon in May '07. Is it hard to get reservations? Are they pretty good with requests, ie: choosing a building?

POR the only bad thing about it is that its easy to get lost your first day or two, and its reallly big. my second favorite resort next to WL, but i am staying at Yacht and Beach in jan. so that might be my favorite.

If you book ahead you will be fine. They have been pretty good at getting us where we want to go for the most part. It will depend on a lot of things. Like if you arrive mid week you might not have as many choices as on a weekend when most people arrive.

Of the moderates, I've stayed at POR (Dixie Landings then) once and Coronado Springs Resort twice. Loved them both. While CSR does have a "convention" feel to it, I don't think you'll see that too much at Christmas. We didn't anyway. When we stayed there in May, we noticed a lot more of the business people.

Now we really like Coronado Springs... it is my favorite of the moderates...though I've never stayed at CB. We honeymooned at POFQ and it was very nice...but kind of boring...too low key. The next year we stayed at POR/DXL and we loved it much better than POFQ... I would definitely stay at Riverside again...though as our kids are getting older...if we want to stay at a moderate we'll have to move to one with the trundle bed option...for now we still have one that will qualify as a baby and can get by in a pack-n-play crib for another year...two techincally, but I can't imagine having a 3 year old sleep in one of those little cribs. We may join vacation club in the near future anyway....so that will make the Deluxe Resorts more affordable, I think...

Why do I like CSR? I like the food court, the main pool, the bar, and the quiet pools... I like the theming... And I like that I can try out my Spanish on the CM that work there. ;) This will be our third time staying there... And we are going back there despite having a couple of bad nights last time...

Last year, because the rates were SO LOW... I think many of the school groups that would normally stay at Value resorts were at CSR instead... and there were just too many unsupervised minors... and perhaps a couple of groups of college students to boot...hard to know if they were in their mid teens or late teens... anyhow... the kids WERE a problem...yes...but more problematic were the white trash group of young adults staying next to us... I don't know what their deal was...but any time we returned to our hotel, they were outside sitting in front of their doors smoking... they'd drag their room chairs out there to smoke... one guy was in a wheelchair.. all of them were in their late 20s/early 30s... they took issue with the noise that a group of teenagers made as they were passing by...got into an altercation with the kids... I guess the kids started giving them trouble... our neighbors started cussing left and right. (BTW, this was at 11:30 AM...and again at 2AM)... I called security...security...I have small children (then ages 4 months, 2, and 4) that I would NOT want to have awakened--especially given the language... well...our neighbors started having it out with security...demanding that the kids be aprehended and put out on the street... our neighbors were more disruptive than the kids were by a great degree--the kids were just passing by...so their noise was transient... we were stuck with the cussing neighbors for far too long... This happened again the next night..so that morning I went down to guest relations and asked to have our rooms moved to the otherside of the complex... they took care of the move... and when we got our bill..we saw that they had credited us for the two rooms for two nights for which we had complaints (I did call both nights to guest relations to complain...so they had that on record, I'm sure). The weird thing is that they never told me that they were going to comp the rooms for those two nights... they should have told us that when we moved... It would've made us feel like things were taken care of better--we felt kind of annoyed by it until the last day when we checked out and found out it had been credited.

Still...we do enjoy Coronado Springs... swearing neighbors aside. They were the exception to the kind of people I usually encounter at Disney... I really don't know what they were doing there save for smoking outside their rooms 24/7... Sigh...

We stayed at the French Quarter in June. This was our first moderate after years at a Value. If I can help it, I will not go back to a Value. We liked the Moderate so much, we'll probably try for a Deluxe next time around. I'd like to put in another vote for the FQ's small size. After years of fighting the huge lines for buses at All Stars, being in such a smaller resort with fewer people fighting for the buses really added to the enhanced experience.

Riverside is always my first choice. Other than to say Boatwright's is the best restaurant for ala carte breakfast on property, Ill let another member's website do the talking for me.

Quick question about Dixie.....Riverside ;)

Are the AB buildings 14, 15, & 18 considered preferred with the higher per-night charge? We stayed in bldg. 38 in April, but were in bldg. 18 last Spring and in 2000 and it really suited our needs.

Thanks!

I dont believe the buildings per se are a premium charge. Unlike the Values where that is true, I believe the premium charge is only when you have a water/pool view or request a king sized bed in your room. Belle

the only moderate i've stayed at is coronado springs. it was very nice, but very spread out. i remember one morning, i need to go to the food quart for something and i had to take a bus from my room to the lobby and i got on the wrong bus. i had to go all the way to blizzard beach before i got to the lobby, my mom was about to call the police because i was gone for like an hour. if you are careful with the buses coronado springs is nice. oh and the pool is really cool.

All of the moderates have great benefits. It really depends on what theme you're in the mood for. Personally I prefer Coronado because living in Florida doesn't have many desert/southwestern characteristics, so it's a great escape. It's a far walk to the food court but the theming and pool area are great. Just go with whatever you think you would enjoy the most.

Joining the chorus of "Riiiiverside!" devotees in here! ;)

I finally stayed at POR for one night two weeks ago, and I loved it! I had previously stayed at the MK deluxes (WL, Poly, CR, GF), and I would TOTALLY go back to POR. Aside from the price (which, lets face it, is much more "right" than some of the deluxes), the theming was beautiful, and the place just seemed really peaceful... And we were there during peak season!

All in all, my positive experience there is definitely prompting me to think about taking a trip around my birthday in December... hmmm...
