We got some very bad news this morning. Mike’s brother Pat (best man at our wedding) passed away this morning … in a plane en route to Hawaii, about 90 minutes short of the airport.

They’re assuming heart attack. Medical coroner only has to conduct an external examination of the body; no autopsy.

There were four different medical personnel among the passengers. He was zapped 30 times, given 4 shots of adrenaline, oxygen, IV … about 90 minutes from the airport.

His wife figures he was gone before they even got him into the aisle to work on him.

Must have been terrifying for her.

NOTHING on FB. Ruth is still tracking down her side. Mike’s siblings all know.
That's sad news. :( I'm keeping you and Mike in my thoughts.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Thank you everyone for thoughts and good wishes.

Unfortunately, just like with my brother Mark, none of his siblings will get to see him. Sudden death, no illness, no warning, no chance to say goodbye … it ends up feeling surreal. In your head, every once in a while, your brain says - nah, maybe he’s not really dead.

And then weeks and months go by without that person calling you, initiating every telephone conversation with “How is ya?”, and reality starts to set in. Reality bites.

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss! That must be devastating to his wife. How is Mike coping?

Thank you. Yes, his wife is devastated. Usually when extreme measures are taken to revive someone, it is in a hospital, out of view; not 5’ away in an airplane aisle, in view of hundreds of strangers . They jolted him more than 30 times with an AED. I cannot even begin to imagine.

Hard to say how Mike is doing. He’s upstairs snoring, so that means he’s sleeping. He’s kind of numb. And confused.

Pat and his wife have good friends in Hawaii who own multiple condo units, and this was their fourth trip I believe. It makes me happy to know how rich the last few months of his life were. His first grand daughter was born in November, then the joy of the holidays, and the anticipation and preparations of this trip. He was gone within seconds; no suffering. Everything that was done to him was done to bring him back. He had no awareness because he was already gone.

RIP, my favourite brother in law.

That's good that he didn't suffer and had so much joy at the end. Sad for his wife, though....and that poor grandbaby who will never get to know him. Sending gentle hugs to all of you.

Thank you.
Did your uncle make it to his 12/28 concert?
He did, it was a great night for the whole family and I’m glad my dad stayed in so he could attend too. They had lots of photos taken in the lobby of the theater to mark the occasion and will treasure them.

My wonderful uncle passed away on Sunday 14 Jan. I’m still weepy and likely will be for some time. Funeral director estimated that 1500 people queued for an average of 45 minutes in cold showery weather to pay their respects on Tuesday night (when I heard that I couldnt help thinking of WDW wait times!) but we had a nice sunny day (although very very cold) on Weds for the funeral. I’m still in Ireland and will return to NY tomorrow.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your uncle. It was very impressive to read that there were around 1500 people who queued to pay their respects.
