Sending positive thoughtsRemember that emergency root canal I had 12 hours before we departed for our 6-week Florida/Tennessee adventure? Well, it was bothering me before we even fled the hurricane, so I made an appointment to see my regular dentist as soon as we got home.
Paid for even more x-rays and a dental exam, and the dentist said everything “looked” okay. He used the grinder to take it down a bit and to take any pressure off of it, and said he would look at it again in 6 weeks. No crown until he’s sure it’s okay.
Well, it’s not okay. It’s infected I’m sure. It hurts like heck, and that whole side of my face is now throbbing.
Back to the dentist tomorrow. I’m done. That sucker can come out. For a thousand or two more than a whole new root canal (by a specialist this time) and a crown, I can get it yanked and get an implant.
Sadly, I don’t think the extraction will happen tomorrow. 14+ hours to go. Wish me luck.
I'm sorry! That sounds miserable! Wouldn't that be considered an emergency and constitute an immediate extraction?Remember that emergency root canal I had 12 hours before we departed for our 6-week Florida/Tennessee adventure? Thank you. I’ve had an apicoectomy before. The specialist made three attempts to retrieve the broken file “through” the drilled out crown, and then finally had to do the surgery … a couple of days before Christmas. Said I’d probably be having a liquid Christmas dinner. Thankfully he was wrong.Jennifer, I'm sad to hear that the root canal did not work.
Going via my own experiences with a number of root canals, some worked, some did not. I had one that the tooth lasted for 25 years (with a crown). Others worked a few years, and other not at all. (Hence, I've had a number of extractions down through the years.)
I'm including an article below (it's not current, but it explains a secondary procedure that I had on 1 tooth -- when the original root canal didn't work). The endodontist goes from the top of the root, to clear out any infection not reached by the original root canal. It worked for me on that one tooth.
This is just for information only -- not saying to consider this, or not. (Plus, every tooth is different.)
Apicoectomy - A Surgical Option When Root Canal Treatment Fails
If your dentist is recommending an apicoectomy, it means that your tooth cannot be successfully treated with conventional root canal treatment. An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the very tip of the tooth’s root is removed and sealed.www.deardoctor.com
From everything I’ve read, a molar that has had a root canal is more complicated to extract, and is usually performed using sedation like a wisdom tooth extraction. I would think that he’ll look at it, put me on antibiotics, give it a couple of days to settle down, and then schedule it to be removed next week.I'm sorry! That sounds miserable! Is there a public transportation option or taxi you could take to be picked up? And can you arrange it for a day you wouldn't be caring for auntie? I know it's really hard to arrange everything. My husband just got back home after living with his parents for 3 weeks to care for them after his dad's surgery. Trying to schedule everything else in is a pain in the patootie. I hope you can work it out. Otherwise, can you put off the extraction until there's someone available to take you and pick you up? If you get antibiotics and the pain goes away, maybe you wouldn't need to have it pulled right away.Thank you. I’ve had an apicoectomy before. Problem is - my life is very complicated next week. Mike is taking a class, Auntie is not doing well; and if they need to sedate me, I don't know who can drive me. Maybe Spenser? Maybe my brother? (Auntie is the most pressing concern. Plus I look after her 24/7 three days out of six.)
Didn’t pull it because everything “looks” perfect. Didn’t do anything really. Is there a public transportation option or taxi you could take to be picked up? Im sure one of the boys could help with plyersDidn’t pull it because everything “looks” perfect. Didn’t do anything really.
I have to go see the same specialist that repaired my other failed root canal. Until then … Tylenol and ice. If things get really bad, I have a stash of all the post-surgical good stuff I never touched.

And don't you worry @JenniferS as soon as we can find a large enough crane and a barge we will be shipping the Statue of Liberty to New Brunswick and Canada can become the place that welcomes new people to it's vast lands. You can take over from us when it comes to welcoming those that are longing to be free. We apparently have quit that job.Jennifer, I hope that since your post 2 days ago, you received dental related help and/or that you are doing better.
