Today kind of feels like my last day of summer break. Technically next Tuesday is, but I have full day trainings tomorrow and Friday. And on Monday I'm going in to finish my room and prep for Open House, which is next Thursday night. Then Tuesday I'll stay home and enjoy my last day off. And then Wednesday we start our professional days.
As a teacher, August is just one long Sunday. My brain is constantly thinking about school and what I need to get done.
That's nice that you get flex time. We don't get paid to set up our classrooms. In past years we've had two inservice days before students come, with half a day as worktime in our rooms. As any teacher can tell you, half a day is not enough time to set up a room, especially an elementary classroom. Plus, that half a day also comes right before Open House, so we have to have everything prepped for that. Our inservice starts next week. We have 8 hours of "flex time" to complete before September 1 so I will be going into school tomorrow and on Monday to use it up. I'm a little peeved about it though. When I first talked to my principal about it I asked if I could use it in 1 hour increments before and/or after school the week of inservice and he said that was okay and now he contacted me and said it have to be in half day increments. I haven't really even thought about what I need to do, so I guess I'll spend most of my time tomorrow at school just putzing around my classroom and making a list. My student teacher is coming in to meet with me tomorrow so that will be somewhat productive.
Sad face for all that unpaid work you have to do. We actually get a decent amount of work time for our room. Plenty for middle/high school teachers probably not enough for elementary ones though. . We always get a packet mailed to us about 2 weeks before inservice that has the agendas, our contracts, and welcome letters from the administration. When I see that envelope come I know my summer time is at an end. That's nice that you get flex time. We don't get paid to set up our classrooms. We haven't gotten our agenda yet for this year's inservice days, but from what my principal was saying at the end of last year, there isn't going to be much work time for teachers. We have three days of inservice this year, but we're also starting a brand new reading and math curriculum, so we have trainings on both of those. So we pretty much need to have our rooms ready and Open House prepped before next Wednesday. All unpaid.
We usually get our agenda mailed to us in early to mid August. This year we got a welcome letter and it said the agenda would be coming via email in the next few days... we're almost to the end of those next few days, and haven't gotten it. It makes it hard to plan what I need to get done before the inservice days. I wonder what's taking so long this year.Sad face for all that unpaid work you have to do. Here are the things she has organized that are above and beyond the suitcases...Today I am trying to have faith that everything my daughter wants to take to Liberty University will fit in my Mazda CX-9 and her VW Beetle. It's always a challenge to bring my daughter there for the start of school...or to bring her back and the end of the year. The Mazda is a 3 row / 7 passenger vehicle....the 2nd and 3rd rows fold down to make one really long "trunk". Yet you should see the amount of stuff my daughter has! It's like someone sold their home and today is "the closing". I need a moving van!

When my girls went off to college we lived in Vermont. One went to Tulane in New Orleans that the other went to Colorado College in Colorado Springs, No driving them there so the things they took needed to fit into a FedEx box and made it very limited in amounts. I don't think it ever cost me over $50. to ship their stuff. Of course, I did have to pay airfare.Today I am trying to have faith that everything my daughter wants to take to Liberty University will fit in my Mazda CX-9 and her VW Beetle. You need to work on a construction site. The coffee truck comes multiple times/day.
