Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Just curious -- did she take a student driver training course (assuming teacher and student both had masks on during Covid). The reason I'm asking is because (at least up here), the Registry of Motor Vehicles inspectors (road test cops), tend to always favor the people who took a training course from a school (private or other). In other words, I'm wondering if she did, then maybe that's why they just automatically fast tracked her to getting the license (after passing the written test, of course).

Now, if the above was not applicable, I'm still a bit stunned that anyone could get a license without a road test. Maybe I'm just jealous! :p

Anyway, congratulations to her!
No, it is how everyone gets a license here during Covid, if you are 18 years old. And it is a full fledged license, no restrictions. No, professional training course just driving with her parents a specific number of hours (that I don't remember) and once with me. Again this is a special setup strictly because of Covid. There has been talk about calling them back in when the Covid all clear is sounded, but why bother. Whatever damage is going to be done will just be history by then. If she drives like she did when I was with her, I'm not worried about her, but I am about the hundreds of 18 year olds that are now cruising our highways.

I actually laughed about the comment regarding calling them all back in for a road test, once Covid passes on. Like you said, why the heck bother at that point?! ;)

O.k. So let me get this straight. You went through all kinds of studying and practicing for your license. Then you get to the point where you are ready for the final road test, and THEN they stop you, asking for a doctor's note? Why couldn't they have just asked in the beginning of student driver studying and practicing, if a student driver had any medical condition - that they'd need a doctor's note to continue and take the driver training? SO glad I got my license here in the States years ago.
The process is so weird here. When I had my first lesson, my instructor told me I needed to give them authority to set up a drivers test. I tried, every driving school has a code, which you need to fill in to give them the authority. I didn't have that code, it wasn't anywhere on their website or on their information packet. But I thought I had plenty of time to do that because it was my first lesson. You can't set up the driving test until you've passed the written test anyway. So I got my written test out of the way, and my instructor reminded me about the authorization. So I did the authorization, but it didn't tell me that they needed the health form before making the appointment. I mean, I've been taking lessons all this time....if they need to make sure I am fit to drive, shouldn't they do that BEFORE you take lessons? Otherwise I could be putting the instructor and everyone else on the road in danger every time I have a lesson. So I filled out the survey thing and 5 minutes later, I got a "request denied" mail. But yes, I went through all the lessons and passed my written test, and NOW they tell me I may not be elligible for a license. After I have spent hundreds on driving lessons and study materials. Meanwhile, my husband had his drivers license BEFORE his diabetes diagnosis and he doesn't need to prove that he's still fit to drive. They don't pull your drivers license when you get a new diagnosis, but when you try to GET a license, it's a problem. There are probably thousands of drivers on the road every day with medical conditions...one of the questions was about kidney problems and whether I've had an organ transplant. My BIL has, but he's still allowed to drive. They haven't taken away his license. I really don't get it.

Why would having diabetes hinder your driving ability? I suppose if it wasn't controlled you could pass out from low blood sugar but do they have the same rules for people with other conditions?
There was a whole list of conditions...do you have a heart condition? Do you have a disease affecting your kidneys? Have you had an organ transplant? Do you have epilepsy? Do you have any condition that makes it difficult for you to move your legs? Arms? Answering yes to any of them means you have to give more information about the nature of whatever you have.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but my 18 year old granddaughter just got her license and because of Covid19 she didn't have to take a road test. Just the written one. I've ridden with her and she is quite a good driver, but, if I didn't know her I would be a little afraid of sharing the road with her.
I never took the driving test in the US for my license. I was 16 and I was terrified of driving. My mom told me I could have ONE more year to practice, but at 17 I was getting my license. When I went to the DMV, I took the written, they took my picture, then they had a problem with the picture machine that a bunch of people's pictures were messed up. They were really behind on getting the hardcopies out because of that, and they were in a rush, saw my age, and assumed it was supposed to be a license. So they sent me a licence instead of a learner's permit. Mom called them, but they said it was their mistake, congratulations. So I never took the driving test...which of course makes it all the harder to do it here, because it's way harder here in the first place, and I still HATE driving, and I never got validation that I was a decent driver in the first place, so I'm not all that confident.

But my husband got his license in the US when we lived there too and he said it was SO much easier there. He drove around the block, got onto the interstate for a couple of miles, and back to the DMV and that was it. He didn't have to parallel park, or drive in reverse or anything. Here, you have to do parallel parking, back into a parking space, pull in forward to a parking space, drive in reverse around a corner, start from a parked position on an upwards hill, follow GPS instructions, follow a route via road signs, drive on the interstate....it takes around an hour. My husband was done in the US in about 15 minutes.

It's 2020. Why the heck not?
Quick update on our "Tiger on the loose" situation going on currently in east TN.

After more witnesses have phoned in spotting the animal, speculation has begun it could be a bobcat or a cougar, not a tiger. This is speculation only thus far.

The only solid evidence surrounding this story is what was witnessed by the Knoxville deputy and several others, and the animal in question did not escape from the local zoo.

If it turns out being a bobcat or cougar, it will make the score a solid
Cats: 1

in this game of who fooled whom.

Also, whenever / if ever this mystery cat is caught or discovered again... there's gonna be a line of folks ready to shake it's paw and thank it for giving our community some breaking trending news which doesn't involve Covid.

Watching the news today and the 9/11 commemorations, something really struck home with me.

That day changed our lives forever. One single morningā€™s events have irrevocably changed how we live our day to day lives even 19 years later. Iā€™m not just thinking about airports ... museums, ferries, sporting venues, WDW - all changed. Even the extra paperwork I have to do with every deal at work (FinTrack, part of the post-9/11 anti-money laundering legislation) are all a result of that fateful day.

For those who think that life is 100% going back to the way it was as soon as we get a reliable vaccine, - you are wrong. Not happening. This pandemic that has killed almost one million people worldwide (maybe over-reported in some countries, for sure under-reported in others) has guaranteed that some aspects of our ā€œnew normalā€ are here to stay. Probably forever. Iā€™m not sure how this makes me feel. Sad, resigned, wistful? Sigh.

There are a lot of businesses who are struggling, but there are also some that are doing fine with everyone working from home. I wonder if this will lend to more people working from home permanently. My brother is an accountant, and he is able to do his entire job from home with no problem. They've already told him it will be at least 2021 before he's back in person, but from what it sounds like he could be at home for a long time, maybe needing to go into the office once a week.

I also know a lot of schools will use this as a "draw" to their district with the virtual learning. I would not be surprised if many districts offer virtual education every year past this. I don't think it's the best education, but if it gets people to enroll, I could see it happening. More likely in larger schools, but you never know. We are already worried that some of the changes that we're struggling with will become permanent, such as having our lessons pre-recorded if a kid gets sick and misses a day, or making our entire curriculum available online in addition to doing it in person. Or not being given a classroom budget, which we didn't get this year. We received $0 to buy supplies for the start of the year.

But then some changes have been positive. For example, we pushed forward with getting Chromebooks for all of our students. It was supposed to be another two years before that happened for our grade, but we ended up getting them in spring. That's been a challenge to start the new school year, but it opens up so many more option when teaching when each kid has technology.
