So - it's 8:15pm. Mom's meds are slowly wearing off, and she can't have her pain pills for another hour. She's asked me 8 times in thelast 5 minutes if it's morning or night. I think we're in for a long evening....

That's how my great aunt got. She rarely knew what was going on. At one point she kept asking for her husband who had passed away years earlier. I don't think she even recognized her own son at the end. She for sure didn't know who me or my immediate family was. It was rough, especially when she had to be transported via car from Houston to Wisconsin. My grandmother asks the same question frequently right now. Simple things like "When do you start work?"

It's rough, I know, but hang in there.

So my husband and I have worked out a system for now. Mom needs to get up to the bathroom several times at night, and needs help getting out of bed, so he's on call til 4, then I take over from there. I'm an early riser anyway, so that works for me, and then he can sleep in after I get up. So far, so good.

OK I didn't think you both were old enough to retire
