My uncle has family in Galena. I have to ask, though, what is this "hole in the wall hotel" you stayed in? :p

It certainly wasn't Disney-ish. I'll ask my DH if he remembers what the name of it was, a Best Western or Super 8, old. Had a small pool though. We always went up when there were 2 a days so the pool helped in-between practices. It was walking distance to the football field on campus. Does that help at all?

It was probably a Super 8. Was the diner right next to the hotel?

Why would Plattville be any worse than Anywheresville?

I missed this post. I didn't say that. I have a personal attachment with fond memories of Platteville. And because of fond memories and an attachment to that town during my kids childhood it hits on a more personal level.

Boy you're a test to my aging memories, Chgo Bears left Platteville near the turn of the century so overnights there have been a while. The diner was real real close, again a quick walk. Hotel old, framed like an old aluminum sided house would be? If my memory serves me correctly? We could pretty much park the car and walk anywhere. They had a small grocery store that carried a good Liebfraunmilch wine for about $5 a bottle, after drinking that I could pretend I was at Dixie Landings by the pool.

My guess is that it was a Super 8, and the diner you ate at is no longer open and closed a couple years ago. Unless it was the old Governor Dodge Hotel. That would be closer to the stadium. That hotel was remodeled into apartments years ago. That would be farther from the grocery store, though. So it's either Super 8 or Governor Dodge. :p

It had to be the Super 8 by what you are describing. That is sad about the diner though. Honestly as we drove through post Bear's, with the changes to the highway over the years being farther out, we'd hit the Culver's over the diner.

Strange how a sad day for many brought back some pretty darn fond memories. Mixed emotions.
