One Little Spark...
Last week it was how to organize your files. This week it's a Word tutorial showing you how autocorrect and spell check work, as well as changing the font and the margins.

All of which I taught myself by 5th grade
I ran into that with my fellow teachers...when I got into VBA with my class, they were so upset (not students, teachers)...

I am not sure how much longer MS Office will support VBA though.

Depends really. Average lifespan on any hardware is around 4 years. Can you get more? Yep. Can you get less? Yep!

If it's ISP (Verizon) provided, just call and gripe. They'll give you the latest and greatest for free, nothing to lose! If it's your own personal WAP, then there are things you can do to check it's health...but, considering the cost of your time (depending on how you measure the cost of time), it may just be easier / cheaper to buy a new one.
It's Verizon's, and it's four years old. Think I'm going to just call and get a new one. Thanks!

It's a boring class. At least it's online so I can go pretty quickly through it (and don't have to suffer through doing the tutorials with clueless people). Most of the stuff I know how to do, just some of the methods are ways I wouldn't choose.

They are teaching the "Best Practices"...and probably need to call the helpdesk themselves just to connect to their phones to the schools Wifi.

Sit through (I'm sorry you have to)...easy A though!

Yeah, got a perfect score on last week's work. Hoping to do the same thing again. The only part I'll have to pay attention to better is Excel since that's not a program I've worked with a ton. PowerPoint and especially Word I've worked a lot with, though.

Since my mother came in my room with her iPad about 30 minutes ago and asked me what "sync" is, I can understand why they must teach this course!

Metro took you a second to figure out?

I hate metro...unless I'm on a setup with a Surface Tablet...then it makes sense.
I'm not using a Surface tablet... I know I'm using 8 the wrong way, but it just never really frustrated me except for the touchpad being way too sensitive.

Oh, that's a computer thing, and you can turn that down. Go to Control Panel, Devices and printers, and your touchpad should be listed. From there you can turn the sensitivity up or down and change other settings that may annoy you

EDIT: You may have to scroll down to find it

If you wanna make some money off Office though, learn how to connect it to databases and look into VBA.

Though, as I said, I'm not sure how much longer VBA will be around...

But, I'll give you a real world example...an example of how I make money today...

I have a client who gets a statement from a bank and can download it in excel format. They need to take that statement and reconcile it with their accounting system, which they can also export to excel format.

Using VBA, I can make a macro that they run which in a few minutes combines the two spreadsheets, compares their values, and kicks out the matches and mis-matches on two separate worksheets (tabs) for them to review the mis-matches, rather than having to do a detailed audit line by line.

How does this mean income? Well...to do it manually would cost at least one person lets say 500 man-hours (pulling that number out, but it's not unreasonable when you are looking at thousands of transactions).

Multiply that by a data-entry clerk hourly rate of 12 bucks an hour and you have $6000. So, whether the person is employed doing other things for the company already, or is employed strictly for this, it costs the company around $6k to do this. Add in taxes and benefits (FICA, SUTA, FUTA, etc...at an average 3.5%) and you have a total cost of $6210.

If you have the macro, then the number of mis-matches is reduced, as well as the accuracy of the process. The final result, lets assume, is a 10% data error rate, so, out of 500 man hours of records to audit, they now only need to spend 50 man hours.

50 * that same rate is 600. And the total cost after T&B is also far less.

So, I walk in and say "I can automate x and y, and allow you to utilize your current labor expenses more efficiently"...and I get contracts.

But, they don't teach ya'll that in these courses.

All that being said, there is a dark horse in this race, and that's overseas outsourcing, where you have salesmen selling easy solutions to people who are used to people like me...but as a result have no idea how their business truly runs.

This is why there is so much outsourcing...

And you can bring the start menu back. This is the one that @englanddg recommended to me, and since I've had it when my dad's borrowed my computer or my brother's he hasn't complained one bit about Windows 8

The lack of a start menu annoys the crap out of me.
It's fine on my tablet since I use metro more and I can hit the windows thingy on the screen and easily get to metro. Everything I need is basically on my desktop and/or pinned to my taskbar. But I like having the Start Menu back

I agree. I like the metro setup for a tablet setup. One day I'll take a pic of our test lab with the metro interface using a Surface Pro and 2 screens, it's killer. I love that.

As far as my laptop though? Or my servers?

No thanks.

I did that a couple weeks in. It still likes to switch apps accidentally, but I've been using a mouse at home anyway so its more infrequent.

I considered adding the start button too, but the button only being on the keyboard isn't just a big issue. I have everything I mainly use on the desktop and everything else I just search.

I've barely been on metro since I got my tablet. Pretty much if there's something that I want to do that requires an app (including Minesweeper) then I can do it on the tablet. Computer I use mainly for work and web browsing. Tablet I use for some work, games, and video (since I got a converter program for my DVDs)
