Iris. What a delightful name for such a beautiful little girl.
Her art is pretty amazing. The prices that it's gone for are ridiculous. Who knows; she may have a career in art already, or at least a way to ensure that she supports herself for the rest of her life. It's quite amazing how these kids see the world, which is much different from those of us who do not have autism. She's quite talented. Me? I doodle very nicely.

As for the cat, it's amazing how that animal has been able to help her. That's one tolerant cat; he even gets in the bathtub with her (seriously, how many cats will do that?). And since she doesn't work well with other children her age, the cat has been a constant companion. People don't always think of cats when they think of therapy animals, but this just goes to show that certain cats can really work wonders with certain people who need the emotional support. There's a girl who goes to my school and lives on campus who has a therapy cat for depression. Sweet cat; thinks everybody is there to see him. But he's really helped her with managing her depression. She had to get special approval to have him on campus, and he's only allowed because he's a registered therapy animal.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
There was a very bad crash here in town last weekend.
Two guys in a stolen truck ran a RIDE program, were pursued by the police, and smashed into a car being driven by two young girls.

The one girl had minor injuries, the other was in critical condition. She died on Wednesday.

For a couple of days, my brother Terry has been telling me rumours of who the driver of the stolen truck was. Today, the police released the names of both suspects, and both victims.

Sure enough, we know the driver. He is the son of my mom's best friend. He is charged with 7 very serious crimes, 4 of them involving the words "causing death".

I have tried all day to push this to the back of my mind, but it's now 3:00 a.m., and my mind is just whirling.
I feel sick for everyone involved. A beautiful 18 year old girl is dead. Ricky is going away for a very long time. And his mom must be absolutely heart-broken.

I will wait a couple of days before I call her. But, call her I must. Not looking forward to it.
In a perfect world, she will be screening her calls. Then I can leave a message and she can call me back when she is up to it.

I would imagine she is inundated with calls right now. Thankfully, she uses her maiden name in the phone book. Based on the hateful comments written online, people who have never met her are assigning blame to her for the actions of her 48 year old son. Ridiculous.

All it takes is a momentary foolish act, and dozens of lives are ruined.

I took Walter to a Nature Center this morning, because we had Sun (briefly) for the first time in a week (gone now.) I put a ramp up to the back of the SUV to load him but he always lets me guide him down as he cautiously jumps out. When we got home he refused to get out. He stood up looked down, reverse moved to the backside of the hatch bed and refused to get out. I had to put up his ramp and then he indignantly walked the ramp.

Walter gets it. Sometimes, it's necessary to buck conventional behavior; we all have those days . . . ;) :D

I just Googled the speed limit on the Dan Ryan Expressway. 45 mph! (That's more than 72 km/h to @Cesar R M and me.)

Are you kidding me? Who the heck would be crazy enough to even want to ride a bike with cars going this fast.

And worse yet, this lady has no helmet!
The speed limit is actually 55, but most of the time traffic is going 60-65. Unless its rush hour then its stop and go...

People are stupid. My mom currently works as a high school secretary and the stories she has, after only working there for two weeks, are amazing. People are idiots. Helicopter parents. God, no wonder why this country is going under and the politicians love it. Kids who thinks the world revolves around them. People who vote without before informed really get under my skin.

How awful. Stupid people.

Also another reason why law enforcement here at least is picking and choosing who they pursue over the roads. They try at least to put thought into the collateral damage of pursing and the type of crime. Tough calls.

13 days until Halloween. :)

Getting close. My DD this week planned an aquatic halloween party. They had all sorts of games and contests in the water themed to Halloween. They also as party favors had hundreds of glow in the dark Halloween ducks in the water. If they could get them all out in the time frame everyone got a duck to take home. They also had a Haunted Mansion build craft set up on deck, too cute.

I really really hate the term Helicopter Parents re-coined in this usage by administrators meant to demean parents. While sometimes parents are overly involved true, other times the Helicopter Parents are and should child advocates. Then same administrators that complain and blame parents when their children get into trouble that the parents are disconnected from their children and should be more involved. One way or the other I find it to be an ugly slang term that tends to be used to bully parents into going away. I expect better choices of words by highly educated professionals than slang terms tagged to parents. If parents started tagging teachers or administrators with slang words they likely would not take it in stride.

OK, so (as @Cesar R M would say ;)) in other news...
It was announced, yesterday at the firm, that one of the partners will be stepping down and leaving on Nov. 1st. He just cannot take the stress anymore. Very sad, 'cause we all love this guy. But, as we all also know, life's too short and family comes first, so we all definitely understand. He will be going on a church mission to Haiti for a coupla' months, or so, and then coming back to his own practice, only doing about 2-3 houses a year. He will not be hiring anybody. He will also not be taking any clients with him. That slack will have to be taken up. They need another partner.

It was kindly offered to me and we discussed, but, I also needed to discuss it all with my DWifey first, of course. Upon discussing with the partners and DWifey, I decided to, respectfully, decline. As I said, it was kindly offered to me. I am WAY more valuable to the firm (and, I've always known this) just doin' the thing I do best...crankin' out design like an, as one partner puts it, "Animal!"

During busy times over the last 22 years, they've hired other designers that have never worked out. They have always turned out to be not as advertised, were constantly butting heads with the partners over some sort of "creative differences", etc. So, to the partners, I am comfort and stability.
Plus, they already reward me quite nicely, with none of the major, mind-numbing, responsibility that can come with a partnership.

And, we go on... ;) :)

I've posted before about the 4-ish mile stretch of country back road that's part of my trip (when it's not flooded) to the office. Tree-canopied, hilly, curvy, shoulderless, double-yellow-stripe-along-every-foot. Groups of cyclists are attracted to this road like moths to a flame. During both morning and evening rush hour, this road is BUSY with car and tuck traffic. It is a major relief artery for the main roads.
In my mind, anyway, you are a complete moron if you cycle on this road. Let me repeat that... MORON.
Although, there haven't been any deaths or injuries that I've heard of recently, it's happened over the years, and it's bound to happen again.
As my pop has been known to say...
"Havin' the 'right of way' don't make ya' any less crippled or dead."
