I just looked up minimum wage for Iowa and Minnesota. Iowa is $7.25, and Minnesota is $5.25. Looks like you guys are the highest around here.

But you have to remember how laws in the US work. Federal Laws superseded state and local laws. Even if MN does not enact a new law they must abide by the Federal Law. Nobody likely wanted to sponsor a new law for the $7.25, it is politically dangerous so they just follow the Federal Mandate. If you look at how many states have $7.25 they did just get to that number by coincidence. Our State leaders are fighting over to keep it at $8.25 or raise it to $10, $12 or $15. So it is hanging in there at $8.25 'cause nobody can agree.

I didn't say they weren't abiding by the law... I was just stating what their State law was...

The Gap and its subsideraries just raised their own Minimum to $9 and $10 next year.

IKEA also put a good jump in their own minimum wage that slides across the country, in one state it went up 17%.
The minimum wage will run from a low of $8.69 an hour at its stores in Pittsburgh and West Chester, Ohio, to $13.22 an hour at its store in Woodbridge, Va. Ikea's new average minimum wage, $10.76 an hour, was $3.51 above the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

As unemployment rate is falling some retailers are finding it harder to hire competent employees. For the last 7 years there was a surplus of people wanting these jobs, many of which were under employed. The tide is changing.

Can you imagine if the Federal Minimum goes to $10-$12, Disney is going to have a fit!

Fair enough, by your post I wasn't seeing that MN was really paying the vast majority of their minimum wage employees the higher $7.25, that is why I clarified that they could not go below the Federal Minimum wage law in most cases.

This is from MN official Government webpage.

Small employers
annual sales volume of less than $500,000 and not engaged in interstate commerce
$5.25
Federally covered employers
businesses with annual dollar volume of business of $500,000 or engaged in interstate commerce
$7.25

People born before 1946 are called -
The Greatest Generation.

People born between 1946 and 1964 are called -
The Baby Boomers.

People born between 1965 and 1979 are called -
Generation X.

And people born between 1980 and 2010 are called -
Generation Y.

Why do we call the last group -Generation Y ?

Y should I get a job?

Y should I leave home and find my own place?

Y should I get a car when I can borrow yours?

Y should I clean my room?

Y should I wash and iron my own clothes?

Y should I buy any food?

But perhaps a cartoonist explained
it most eloquently below...

You wanna know the worst thing about living next door to people with a pool?

a) The non-stop weekend company. From 10:00 a.m. until nightfall?
b) The difficulty pulling into my driveway because they've packed the street so tight? They clear out their driveway so the kids can play basketball, and then wonder if maybe they can park a car or two in mine. Thank God for call display!
c) The screeching, splashing, screaming, drinking?
Or d) All of the above?

And, I'm sure it's not just you who is annoyed by all that; I'll bet other neighbors around them also think that family is being inconsiderate. What time does the noise ordinance go through in your area? Where I live, it's 10:00 p.m.; that is when people can call the cops to shut down a noisy party.

Also, since you're up in Canada, I'm assuming your summers are a bit shorter than down here. Do you think the outdoor pool parties will wrap up by mid/late August?

They have a heater. Parties go until Thanksgiving weekend - second weekend in October, for us.

The parties wrap up by 9:00 p.m. generally, so I can't complain about that.

I'm just being cranky. This is the first time I've been able to sit out in my yard all year, and they have just wrapped up a 15 minute discourse about diarrhea.

Time to insert my earbuds and listen to a little Mealoaf. Maybe I'll even sing. That will clear everyone out real fast!

Yep, Chicago Navy Pier was as nutty as the Fireworks I went to.

At 5pm the Pier closed to Capacity and that puppy is a massive pier 3300 feet or just a bit over a mile long into the lake.

The crowds then spilled onto Illinois Street.

They are building a fly over and this is what will also be in the parking garage. Broke ground in March.

I love visiting downtown Chicago, just don't wanta live there.

So many editorial comments....just can't choose.

But something has changed in recent years or at least since the Babyboomers launched an official organization, they tacked on 5 more years to that generation. I was never a boomer and now I am. Go figure.
