One Little Spark...
Very true, he did not teach and got mad if questions were asked. Thankfully, I didn't have him, I only know this because multiple people told me the same thing. Anyway, I'm pleased with the education I got in high school. I go into college with 15 credits to start out with, I speak another language (even though my Spanish 4 teacher was bad, my Spanish 5 and 6 teachers caught me up), and most of my teachers, well, taught. I had very few bad ones.

Anyway, I do have to get some sleep. And I won't be around tomorrow. Bye!

Have fun at Hershey!

I left teaching because of it.

I know several people who have had similar thoughts. Several of the teachers "retired," in other words they left to get the benefits in case they are someday taken away. Several of the people are working part-time jobs at other places.

Being the son of a teacher, I hear a lot of the insider details of schools, and I am very worried about what I'm getting myself into, but it's what I want to do.

Oh, I had crap benefits, and terrible pay (I was at the collegiate level, non-tenured).

I didn't leave for that. I left because of the politics. When people assume that because they are certificated, they are intelligent, that makes for a terrible environment.

For example, to earn some extra money, I also did our website (small college), and I remember being told one month that the reason they had decided to withhold my monthly bonus for doing all this work (for the website) was because the site didn't work.

It turned out that some administrator (a rather highly placed one) kept sending emails out to a <somecollege>.com address instead of <somecollege>.edu, and as a result people were not getting her emails, and since emails meant "web" to her very "well educated mind", that meant that I wasn't doing my job, so I didn't deserve my bonus.

Oh, and don't get me started on my federal contracting days! Like, where we had a network that was hacked 3 times by the Chinese in my 12 month tenure that was controled by a GS-14 who was merely that because he had gotten a doctorate in Theology (but, the position DID require a doctorate!) :p

Good god I could for hours about this.

I don't know if it's the same where you taught, but here in Wisconsin during the whole Scott Walker thing, it was sometimes hard to walk the hallways. The staff looked so depressed, and my mom would always say how staff members would fight about which side was right. It just wasn't a good environment for students or staff. What was really hard was hearing that my French teacher (my favorite teacher, and someone who was truly an inspiration in my life) said she wasn't sure she wanted to do it anymore. Thankfully she's still in it, but she is really an amazing teacher. She has the passion, she loves the students, and she can get it through to the students.

There are far deeper issues in our educational system as a country than a Governor who tried to balance the budget.

But, I do understand your comment. I just wish to say, without getting to far into it (at least in the forums) that there is a much deeper story to what is going wrong, I think. And, it's not as simple (gosh, I wish it was) as blaming it on a political figure.

I agree, but here it was a huge deal. It's not even so much about the changes that happened, but the way that it all went down. Even Walker says now that he would have done it differently. There's no way anyone can say the education system is down because of one guy, but you can say that one guy is either helping or hurting it.

I know it was. I was an op in and watched an IRC channel break up because of it (lost senior ops, botnets, etc, very long story)...and IRC isn't all that common anymore, and tend to stick together for still being around, at least at that time they did...

It was very political, very charged, and most of the news and general awareness was devoid of the truth of what the real issue was.

Walker was faced with a state budget that was tanking at a massive rate. Walker did create a firestorm, and regardless of his stance, he meant to do so.

That being said, have you ever been a member of a Union? Unions are not "evil", by any means, but they can be. I can elaborate if you wish, but I'll leave it at that.

Have you had the distinct displeasure to work in a large bureaucracy?

I've had both. I've also worked for middle (publicly traded) and smaller businesses, and prefer working for the latter.

Point is...it's not as simple as many, even very well educated people who are fearful for their jobs, portrayed.

I just don't agree with some of the things he cut, and some of the things he didn't cut. And then some of the things that he used state money for during the process.

On a side note, I feel sorry for his children. They were (maybe still are, not sure of their ages at the time) in public schools at the time. It must have been difficult for them.

Money has very little to do with education.

Money has little to do with education, but I think it can affect how well students do in school in the end.

I'm trying not to push (no pun intended) it too far here. I know that politics are frowned upon here.

I'll just point you to Master's degree Comp Sci students who list on their resume they know networking can't explain how IPv4 subnetting works in binary...

And a lot of them went to multi-million dollar complexes to get their Masters.

Probably best to just leave it alone.

If you are considering a job as a teacher, go into it with open eyes. It can be extremely rewarding personally, especially when you are allowed to teach.

I wasn't looking at it from that angle at all. I was looking at it more from a standpoint of what the children are able to have access to, and what conditions they're learning in.

But I agree with you about what you said in your last post.

And that concludes another serious point in this thread's history. (This thread is getting serious too frequently. What's going on?)

The nature stuff bores me.
I just really don't care about seeing where they live. Boring for me.
Child, save yourself while you still can. Get out of your sheltered bubble and LIVE. See the world; the real world. You're missing out heavily, and I pity you so greatly. But you're still young, and with youth comes hope. Get out there & explore. There's so much more than just theme parks, museums, & zoos. The "nature stuff" as you so elegantly put it, is the real stuff. You like animals, but only when they're in captivity? Come on. Don't grow up to be one of these materialistic people only infatuated with money and what is manmade. If you're only seeing the world through airplane windows, zoo cages, and educational YouTube videos, then you are simply not living.

I envy the poor man who sees true beauty in the smallest pond, and pity the rich man who has seen the world, yet cannot appreciate the tallest of mountains.
