In the words of Clint Eastwood's "Gunny Highway" from "Heartbreak Ridge"...
"You improvise, you adapt, you overcome." (was gonna' post the film clip, but, it's pretty riddled with profanity.

Good job, soldier.

There has to be a historical reason for this...find out and write an essay so this can be on the test!I have yet to figure out why they do this. There is no valid reason that I can come up with.
Half of my dinner sucked. So I'm gonna have ice cream.![]()
I just Googled noon whistles. The quick search said that they usually were in factory towns, and it signified a lunch break. This town hasn't really been a factory town ever, but this was a huge mining region back in the 1800s. Could be something that started then and has just continued for today. I found a story of one town in Vermont, I believe, that said it just continues its sirens for nostalgic purposes only. There has to be a historical reason for this...find out and write an essay so this can be on the test!
Sitting here watching tornado warnings popping up all around me.![]()
I think we found the same website!I just Googled noon whistles. The quick search said that they usually were in factory towns, and it signified a lunch break. Breaking news bulletin: Over the weekend, I had some unexpected, financial pixie dust fly in my direction. Out of the blue, my MIL told me that she was going to pay for a Disney vacation for me!!! I was absolutely stunned. She knew our bills had increased this past year (yet, no different than everyone else I know ...).
I had not planned to go away to WDW until next year, and now I'm going this Friday for 4 nights/5 days. I'm psyched! (DH doesn't go, he's not a fan of WDW. That's o.k. though, because WDW is one place I don't mind going solo at all—done it a number of times over the years. It's always fun!)
Sometimes I make an offensive joke. The loss in followers never really correlated with those tweets though.I doesn't help that my tweets are so controversial. I mean, my last tweet was welcoming Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Packers. That's gotta make people mad right there.
Our sirens are only tested a few times a year. I would not want to live where they went off daily.Does anyone besides me have the noon whistle where they live? To people who aren't used to it, it sounds like a tornado siren, but there's a difference between the two. College students from bigger cities get annoyed by it, the small-town folk like myself don't even notice it.
Rotations around us. (knock on wood not on us!!) We're just waiting for the all clear....which may not happen before 11 pm.Yikes. Hope your stayin' safe.
You get used to it, and most of the time I don't hear it anyway when I'm inside. The students who come here from Chicago think it's some kind of sorcery. Although they have problems adjusting to small-town life to begin with. Our sirens are only tested a few times a year. I would not want to live where they went off daily.
Have I mentioned I hate the sound of tornado sirens.![]()
Stay safe @MOXOMUMD. We got some small hail while we were driving today, very heavy rains and winds, and some lightning. I don't think there were any tornado watches, though, although we're getting into that season where we have them every couple weekends.
Rotations around us. (knock on wood not on us!!) We're just waiting for the all clear....which may not happen before 11 pm.My mom and daughter are trying to sleep. Staying in contact with my sister in next town over who actually has a storm shelter next to their barn . (we couldn't get there before weather hit)
You could try your city's website, but Pittsburgh (assuming you are in the actual city and not outside) probably wouldn't have them. Too many other alarms going off, and I'm assuming you don't have volunteer fire fighters who need the sirens to go off to know when they need to head to the station.I don't think my city has a siren or anything like that, y'all.
How would I go about finding out if it does, I mean without setting the city on fire?
Most of the time the warnings turn out to be nothing except some high winds, heavy rains, and lightning, but you never know. When the sirens go off we are alarmed, but don't go to the basement unless it's looking pretty bad out. Might not be the safest thing to do, but it's what we do. We usually listen to the police scanner and weather reports on local news stations when it's tornado weather.Scary stuff. We used to have tornado wathches/warnings about 2-5 times a week in spring before the current drought, and have had the siren in our neighborhood go off a few times as a result.
Not so much these days.
Funny thing...
Just as I started to type this it started thundering and lightning, and is now raining like crazy. We've been havin' on and off rain all day for the first time in quite a while. Don't, obviously, want the severe stuff, but, we sure hope this spring turns out to be wetter than predicted. We desperately need it.
Of course she did.
Pretty sure most metropolitan areas have their tornado siren tied in with the old Civil Defense Air Raid sirens. At least they are here. You could try your city's website, but Pittsburgh (assuming you are in the actual city and not outside) probably wouldn't have them.
