Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
True, it can start to be a bit of a drag towards the end of August, but, at least we can't be heat-waved in (at least not yet, anyway... ) like y'all can be snowed in. We can still hop in our cars and, pretty much, safely travel wherever in air-conditioned comfort. Thus, even most convertible drivers even have their tops up in July and August in the heat of the day...! For y'all in a blizzard/days-long-snow-accumulation , not so much. I'm pretty sure that would drag me down a lot more.
We had a heat wave in 1995 where we did 5 days of about 105 and lows in the 90's. There were about 750 people who died from the heat but another 250 were also buried before there could be autopsies so the numbers were close to a thousand. There wasn't wind and the humidity was high.
I had my sons birthday party on a the final day of the heat wave. My DH had bought a window A/C unit as the central air wasn't keeping up with it and he put it in the family room. Both Grandpa's vying for who got the Wing Back Chair with the A/C unit behind it. After dinner I went out and the temperature had dropped into the 70's and there was wind. I told everyone to come outside we were going to open presents out there. I thought as did my DH that they were going to beat me to a pulp. It took some convincing to get them up and stick their big toes out the door to believe the heat wave had broken. Everyone still remembers being able to go outdoors during that particular B-Day party.
