Good to hear. How are you enjoying Windows 8?

I actually really like it. I've had it since December after having previously worked with Windows 7 and have had far less issues with it than the Windows 7 computers. I just find it runs more smoothly. It takes some getting used to and was frustrating at first, but it's got some cool features. I like the app gaming...amazing what they can do to enhance Minesweeper. And the pre-installed email program is better than my old one. I've stopped missing the start icon as well. It would work better as a touch screen, but I use it just fine without one. My parents, however, can't seem to get used to it. Their desktop is a Windows 7 and when they steal either my laptop or my brother's on vacation to use, they get incredibly irritated with it. I think it's because they aren't used to it...they found 7 frustrating at first as well.

*Warning: Me talking about my email recovery again. I'm sure you guys don't care about all the technology issues I've been having recently, but I'm posting anyway. :p*

I may have a way to recover it via a security question, but I have to wait 24 hours from the last time I tried to log in (earlier tonight... actually last night). Hoping that will work so I can use that to get to my YouTube account. All of this just to see if any of my old friends have messaged me, when I haven't talked to them in years.

Using a Surface (I'll have to video our test setups at work), it does work much better as a touch interface (and it's intended to do so)...

First, and yeah, if I geek out and get boring...HERE is what Surface was originally...

A $10,000 coffee table <grin>

Anyhow, the new tablets are supposed to be complete computer replacements (and with the specs of the Pros, they are hitting that mark). The setup I have at work has a Surface as the primary machine, with a USB hub, external KB and Mouse and two 20" monitors. With 8.1 (which was released a week or so ago) they've really got the windows snap features down, and it works well to keep the metro interface up on the tablet inbetween the two monitors and use it as a "control center"...

That's what MS was thinking when they got rid of the start menu (which, though I like this layout, I still think was a BAD idea...)

Anyhow, for your parents, I'd recommend this:

http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php

It's free, easy to set up and configure, and pretty much makes 8 feel like 7, if that's what they are comfortable with.

I'm still using my 2009 Compaq Presario with Windows 7, and probably will until I get a new one as a gift, or I have enough money to by a decent one. Actually, I got this one as a Christmas gift. :p

You're talking to someone who regularly goes to Best Buy just to play with the toys:D

I've been considering getting some sort of tablet for college to do note taking (with an external keyboard of course). I've been leaning towards a Surface RT rather than an iPad. My biggest concern is battery life. The iPad has a nice long battery life. How is the battery life on the surface? Do you know?

Done. It's on mine. Putting it on my brother's tomorrow. Thanks.

I used my 2009 HP until I started having a processing problem. Then when the N key started sticking, I asked for a new one.

Awesome parents I have, they got me a better one than the one I was asking for.

Or you could be like me and use an old fashioned pencil and notebook. ;)

My computer is from 2010...I tend to keep personal machines for 4 - 5 years... I don't see anything wrong with that.

Work...is another story.

The reason is I had a car accident a year ago and injured my back. I was in physical therapy for a few months after. To prevent further injury, I'm trying to minimize my load. So I'm considering a tablet so I can use it for e-textbooks and for note-taking. Also because I type WAY faster than I write.

When comparing with the iPad, the RT is very close, superior in some (many) aspects.

If you can, I'd shell out more for the Pro. It's twice the cost, but you won't need a laptop...ever..., or go with a comparably priced no MS version (Acer is putting out some interesting models right now)...

One thing I'd look for is the digitizer (in short, the pen)... The RT does not support this.

Glad you found it helpful. Take a moment to check through all the customization features it offers...I actually really like it (better than the 7 start menu).

I had to install it on all my Windows 2012 servers because...well...lets just say that Metro and RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) aren't the best of friends, and I have no intention of driving to my datacenter every time I care to work on a server.

I have it on my Windows 8 machines as well because, while I appreciate Metro...I still haven't gotten completely used to it (I'm TRYING to...dangit!), and it makes some things very cumbersome. Things that used to be a "start -> run -> type in command I want" thing are now many steps longer...

There isn't as long as they still work. The reason I got mine replaced in 3 years was because of the processing problem. My parents had their ME (yes ME) for nine years before they finally needed something new. And they kept it going for another few years as a backup until the power supply went up

That describes me! :D

Me too, many times! <grin>

Earlier tonight I was beating my head against the wall because I couldn't get sound from my speaker system and I was trying to watch Planet of the Apes (the reboot...which is terrible, for the record)...

Yeah...somehow I'd muted my system volume.

Derpy derpy derp derp...

Ahh, I see. Then you probably don't want to pencil and notebook. And I type fast, but I don't like all of the formatting issues you come across when taking notes by typing. When I hand write I can do whatever I want. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper, too. :p

Thank you. Originally I was going to pay for it myself (remember the car accident? I was alone, not at fault, and got settlement money) but my parents said something while we were away about possibly paying for it. Depends. I also need a new iTouch and a GPS, so we'll have to work it out.
