I'm at our gym now and there's one guy here with colorful athletic shoes but otherwise still wearing work clothes including a tie while exercising. I'm glad there's always someone dorkier around to make me feel normal.
Your experience at the gym reminded me a little of something (somewhat unrelated) that happened years ago. The common theme is that people who don't dress appropriately for sports look silly, while others are just clueless.
One time, I was standing at a hiking trailhead, adjusting the laces on my boots. A woman walked over from the parking lot to the trailhead, and approached me and a few other hikers there. She had on "fashion" wedge sandals, casual "city" clothes, and carried a Louis Vuitton handbag.
She asked us if this was where you hike (the clearly marked, wooden trialhead sign was right there, as was the dirt path). People told her, yes. Then she asks us how to hike; she had never hiked before. So, one of the guys (amused) tells her, well, put one foot in front of the other and start walking. Anyway, people started hiking up the path. She followed behind and turned around & left after 15 minutes (no surprise to any of us). I assumed that she decided hiking wasn't for her; or, hopefully, thought to do a little research on the sport, and perhaps return in the future, when she was more prepared. Let's hope!
