When I was a younger (Pentecostal) kid in Catholic grade school, I would give up something meaningful, like cookies, chocolate or packaged pastries.
Then in high school, it wasn't as cool to put as much effort into it; but Catholic peer pressure runs deep, so we usually gave up something inconsequential. I always "gave up" smoking. Entirely meaningless, as I was a non-smoker.

I don't really practice "Lenten fasting" anymore. My next door neighbour, however, still gives up beer and alcohol every year. Given that he is a regular drinker, I have always admired this true sacrifice.

How about you @trr1, are you giving anything up?
i think i will give up paying bills or working ;)

This morning plows decided not to work until everyone was already on the roads. As you may know (and if you don't, you'll need to know this for the test), I have about a 2 minute drive to campus, including stopping for crosswalks, etc. At the bottom of the hill that I live on, it kind of dips and then goes back up when turning onto the intersecting road. I got stuck in the 5ish inches of snow we got last night, so I backed up the hill a little bit to get a running start. Well, by the time I was heading down the hill, a car appeared out of nowhere. Luckily I wasn't going fast, so I could stop. Then a car came behind me, and I put the car in reverse in hopes that the car behind me would back up too. They did, and I was able to get onto the road after about 30-45 seconds of trying to use that momentum. I was stuck at that intersection for about 4 or 5 minutes. Luckily it's not a highly traveled road!

The moral of the story: skip school.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Probably one of the worst days of my life as a mother. I just had to have my youngest son removed from my house by the police.
Now I think I will lock myself in my room and cry for a while.

Each year I say I'm going to give up something like chocolate, and I always cave after about a week. I had a better idea when I was a kid: I'd tell my mother that I was going to give up brussel sprouts and lima beans for Lent, and I was going to stick with it. She said it didn't count because I hated both of those veggies . . .
