IMO the world rankings mean next to nothing. There are so many variables for each country that it's unfair to put country against country.

I believe to better the education system, we need to change our attitudes as a nation, not our tests or curriculum. Several students simply don't care about their education, for several different reasons. Some want to care about their education, but family problems, etc, get in the way. In many other cultures, education is viewed by students as their job. Students in France typically don't have jobs on top of school. Here, jobs are just as, if not more important than education. Students are trying to save money for the financial burdens of college among other things.

Just my point of view.

And there is the problem. Mediocrity. It starts young, the excuses are endless and it is rhetoric. My DD worked since she was 15, worked through college, graduated in 3 1/2 years from a Big 10 University that is highly rated with a double major in Math and Statistics despite what French students do or do not have to work.
Blame the students, blame the families. This line of logic doesn't fly in better school districts or private college prep schools, staff would be out on their butts in a heartbeat.

Our districts in the US are all over the board on curriculum and you can see that by which students are admitted into Top Universities. That is why I love National Standards and no child left behind. I welcome Global Testing, if we want our children to compete for admission to the best Universities that the International Students are these days, we need to adjust our curriculum to educate these students to level the Chinese and Indian Students that are entering our Top Universities at. Look at any fine hospital. You will see International Students that completed their undergrad degrees here and then scored high on their MCats. They came to US Universities prepared better than a good chunk of our students have when they start on their undergrad degrees. They have completed far more math and science courses on a whole than our students have before entering Top Universities. They set the bar for curves.

We cannot deny we live in a global world and not preparing our students to succeed in a global environment is wrong. International Students now make up a good chunk of students at our Top US Universities. We have not on a whole altered our curriculum to keep up with the Top International Asian Students entering our Universities. Times are not changing, they have already changed. Our educational system is just in denial and they fear testing. I don't fear global testing, we should know where our educational system ranks in comparison to those over the ponds, just like I believe we need to know how our students rank Nationally. If we are doing it right the test scores will confirm that, if not fix it. By the time these kids take an ACT or a SAT, it is too late.

That is everywhere, you cant escape stupidity.. because stupidity usually spreads.

Imho, I dont think its quantity, but quality.
I remember reading most of the top school countries are related more on the teaching style than quantity. ;)

Yep, you are correct Stupidity does spread. And yes it is a style of teaching and what is being taught. There is an emphasis on languages, math and sciences in other parts of the world. We do far more enrichment courses in the US than we did a generation or two ago and there are only so many hours in a day, only so many days in a school year. We have a well rounded curriculum in our schools where overseas not so much. Ultimately that is what sets the two styles apart, one yields much higher scores when applying to better colleges within Top Universities. All you have to do is look at is what is tested for on the ACT & SAT.

Our 2013 ACT scores nationally fell to a composite level of 20.9, that is so disheartening, a new 5 year low. It is too late to fix those students. They need to be 10 to 12 points higher to get into a University that is Globally recognized. :(

I always liked the chocolate dipped cones

That, and all the other ice cream photos look delish! I don't have a picture, but here's my favorite soft-serve dipped cone at DQ—it has a red cherry dipped top, over soft-serve chocolate. :hungry: I know, I know . . . I have the palate of a 5-year-old. (Must be a second childhood thing . . .)

In the summer the Mister Softee ice cream truck drives through my neighborhood every night at 9pm. They fresh dip the soft serve cones in either chocolate or strawberry. They also make banana splits. Nothing beats sitting around on a summer night and hearing the Mister Softee song!
Isn't 9 PM a little late ?

YES - it is. It's really cool on the weekends but it's really annoying when the kids are just falling asleep and they hear that song. It's basically grown ups that come bolting out the front door waving money.
Ours stop making the rounds around dinner time. After that we have to drive to one of the ice cream places 2 minutes away, like peasants!

Are you kidding... nothing is better then the combination of cherry and chocolate. Strawberry and chocolate come in a close second. If at 66 I have the palate of a 5 year old, that, sadly, would be the only part of me that has remained in good condition. :angelic:

Ours doesn't quite get the concept: he drives around the neighborhood so fast there's not time to grab some money and go out the front door before he's on another street. He must get paid by the mile. Sometimes when my son's had his heart set on a SpongeBob ice cream bar we've gotten on our bikes and chased the truck around the neighborhood for 20 minutes.

Well, that's one way to work off the calories before hand.

I think he is scared of your neighborhood.

The one where I grew up was a 1950s pickup with a freezer unit on the back. So it couldn't really hit high speeds. For a while though the truck couldn't really brake either... This was not an official Good Humor truck.

There's an ice cream wholesale outlet 2 minutes from my house that sells the "ice cream man" ice cream bars for about $10/dozen. But when I go there to get the kids' favorites (Batman bars and those cups with the sour dots) they decide it's not special enough and ask for something else from the truck. Why is it that to a kid, ice cream tastes better if someone in a truck that can't possible pass emissions tests hands it to you through a window and you pay double what it would cost if it came out of your own freezer? Now Mister Softee - with the soft cones - that I don't mind paying for. It's not like I have a soft serve machine in my kitchen with a plethora of toppings at my disposal.
