She is trying to juggle a sorority sister reunion into her time off also and already used 2 days to visit me on a business trip to Utah. So it's just a matter of how many days will the reunion take up that she can use to lounge all by herself at the pool in Vegas.

Pesky vacation days. That way I envy Europe's vacation time.

Congratulations upon the completion of your first year, and a stellar performance review. Can I tell you that my jaw dropped when I read that you received a 10% raise?! Holy cow! That's unheard of these days. I work at a hospital, and everyone gets 2%. In conclusion: stay where you are!!!! :)

Well, then this will make your jaw fall completely off...
I worked for this same firm for over 20 yrs. before they layed me off in Jan. of '09 due to the tanking economy. I worked as many as 3 retail jobs at a time in the interim. About 3 yrs. and 2 mos. later they brought me back on as contract. I did as much as I could from outside the office between my other jobs until they were finally able to bring me back full-time about 10 months later. They payed me per job under contract, but, brought me back at an hourly rate that was, obviously, WAY better than I could ever get anywhere in retail (unless, possibly, in a management position - and I was at our local Disney Store for a year - but, that's a whole other long, drawn-out story ;)).
Most of the stuff I did on contract was preliminary sketch work, so, although they had set me up with CAD, I hardly used it at all until I got back to the office. Once I got back to the office it was friggin' mental overload time!
I had been outta' the game for a long time and there was a lot of tech I was behind on...CAD updates, 3-D modeling, etc. They told me that they would review me at the 3 month mark to assess my progress.
Anyway, at my 3 month review they gave me a.....wait for it...........20% raise!!!!! :jawdrop: NO JOKE!!!
They also told me this time around that I was the only one that was getting that big (the 10%) of a raise. All the other employees are only gettin' 3%. :(

Anyway...
I feel extremely blessed and never take anything for granted. The economy, your health, etc. can all be gone in a blink, but, no sense worryin' about it...just keep rollin' on...!

And, thank you for your kind words and thoughts! :)

I'm going to be in like 6 hour long meetings for 3 days. So my gf is trying to decide if she should just wait until Wednesday night to arrive with everyone else or fly in earlier so she can have some time to enjoy the nicer hotel work is putting me in.

If she can swing it she should definitely go early. There are about a billion ways to entertain yourself in Las Vegas.

Your brother sounds very cool. With my involvement in our schools I am continually amazed by autistic students. My deep belief is most I've encountered in our inclusion classrooms are dramatically more intelligent than most give them credit for. Our ways of determining their intelligence are not good indicators of what their internal IQ is. In the last few years some of the students have made leaps in reading with Kindles where words can be enlarged, for some reason focusing in on less words per page seemed to help. Other students are now not reading the stories, novels and text books, they are listening to the text through downloaded books and text books and seem to absorb it. Some put on large headphones and listen while fumbling with something in hand or even doodling while listening. The hard part for educators is each autistic child is so different and it takes so much time to find the patterns and try different approaches trying to figure out which type of learning style the student learns from best. I've told the story of the elementary student that does incredibly well now as long as his lab is right next to him, a night and day difference in learning and behavior.

You are familiar with our 1lb. 4oz. (now 21 year old) DS miracle child bein' on both the autism and Asperger's spectrums. They really are just wired so differently from most of the rest of us, but, good gosh, they are also some of the most amazingly awesome people, and it's really like digging up buried treasure when you can reach them!!! :)

Sam the Eagle doesn't like you spouting that un-American sentiment.
I'd kill for European vacation time. I wouldn't have to fight for one lousy vacation day they want to take away because I didn't come in during an ice storm.

So we took our niece up to Blue Spring to see the manatees today. We did see a few manatees (front centerish), but also a rather large gator...(see upper left of the photo)IMG_3441.JPG

In what can only be attributed to pixie dust, a guy who was watching it with us claimed it was not real and just put there to please the tourists. Just before I took the picture, the thing was roaring like a dinosaur....I'll see if I got his picture roaring...

We supposedly get European vacation time in my organization, but aren't able to use it all. It doesn't work to just say I have unused vacation time so I'm taking off, if there are projects with deadlines we're responsible for. And whatever we don't use disappears instead of carrying over to the next year.

In all fairness, the first picture I was going to post showed him in the upper right...I'm old, but not that old!

She would probably never leave the pool area if left on her own. She hates doing stuff alone beyond that. She thought I was nuts when I told her I toured DHS when my family was dragging their feet to get out that day.

Just learned the iPhone silent and vibrate has an auto over ride to loud warning sound for Amber Alerts. Scared the daylight out of me. Didn't know what the sound was or where it came from.

I had that go off at like 6:30am a few weeks ago. It was for Lancaster County which is probably 150 miles away... Probably didn't need to notify me...

I heard nothing of this, so this is my first startling. My DD was in the room and we had stereo 'cause obviously hers went off too. Thinking on a whole it is a good idea. I just imagine all the iPhones going off in schools, hospitals, funerals, movie theaters...the endless places, the very reason why my phone is on silent.
