It is definitely an ice issue.

Yesterday morning it starting raining on my way to work. When the drop hit the windshield it immediately froze. After two hours at work we were sent home...there was at least half an inch of ice covering the whole car. The freezing rain continued for several hours making the roads impassable after a while. THEN the snow came.

The temperatures are not expected to go above freezing until Thursday around noon.

So for now everybody is just STUCK where they are.
This is one of those times when we need the "sympathy" button. Snow and rain together may be the worst weather possible.

Snow plows in the south? WHY?

NO.... there are no snow plows at least not around here....I think MAYBE Atlanta has some.
I heard Atlanta had them out in the middle of the day yesterday, but before they could do much, schools and everything else closed sending everyone out onto the roads, and the plows and trucks were stuck in gridlocked traffic.

Yeah, I saw the interview with the Mayor of Atlanta, and he commented that was one thing that they learned this time...they should stagger closings in order to prevent this type of gridlock.

They were interviewing people by phone on MSNBC that had abondoned their cars and walked down the highway just to find somewhere warm to go.

So how are our southern Sageteers? Staying safe and warm today?

It's funny, but Texas is either referred to as bein' in the south, southwest, or west dependin' on who's doin' the referrin' and what their particular perspective is, so I'll just go ahead and chime in...
It was 27 and clear overnight and I still had some residual ice on my car, but, other than that, everything else is gone precip-wise. It's 44 now with a predicted high of 48. 30 overnight then warming into the mid-60's tomorrow, then the mid-70's on Friday and Saturday. Those two little freezing rain/sleet/ice incidents are probably the worst we'll see 'til spring. But, then should come umpteen days of 100+ degree weather and more drought this summer. Woof.

Anything west of Dallas is Southwest. Houston is still East Texas and therefore Southern.

IMHO
It's all SW of me. I guess it can go the way of the pop/soda debate. People here consider south anything Tennesse and below. SW starts at Texas. Cartographically maybe not correct, but that's another debate I'm not up for.

In order to get to TX from MD , you must go south and west, or southwest. Therefore, TX is in the Southwest

I lived for a while right outside Texas, Maryland. It is a little town next to Cockeysville. For my non-Marylander friends, I would usually say I lived in Texas because it is a heck of a lot better to say than Cockeysville....
