Where can I go for positive news?

In a thread entitled “Do you think Disney after-hour events are worth it?”, such posts would be relevant (though I still think they can and should be framed less judgementally). In a thread like this one, however, the only thing that such posts achieve is to inject negativity for no good reason. It’s like when someone starts a thread about vegetarian dining options and a handful of meat-eaters come along to declare how gross meat substitutes are (this has happened a few times on this site). It’s irrelevant to the topic and just poisons the discussion. I can’t explain my feelings better than that.
Okay. :)

And just to add, @Californian Elitist, the problem with a word like "scam" is that it's a highly subjective value judgement when applied to things that aren't literally scam. A true scam is a scheme that swindles you out of money but doesn't give you what you paid for. That isn't my relationship to after-hours events at all, however: I am getting exactly what I pay for and am left very, very happy with my purchase. I have no issue with someone saying that they personally don't see the value in a particular product (this is how I feel about the Disney hotels, which I never stay in), but using derogatory and loaded terms to criticise others for their choices seems uncalled for to me.
I think it’s fine to use “scam” within the context of specific offerings at Disney. I think something is a scam when Disney charges outrages prices for things without good reason, besides just to be greedy and make money. Essentially, times where Disney is playing guests. I in particular think the Christmas parties at WDW are a scam because I grew up going to the DLR, where we get the same thing at no extra cost. I think people are being swindled, but those going don’t and that’s okay. I sincerely hope that people enjoy themselves. We can agree to disagree on the “scam” thing.😉

For something to be a scam, wouldn't it involve dishonesty and deceiving someone?

Disney is upfront about what you are paying, what you get, etc. The customer knows what they are purchasing.

It may be greedy or a cash-grab, but I don't think scam is the right word.

I do think Disney is deceiving their WDW guests, specifically with the Christmas parties.

The OP started a thread saying they’re aware of and tired of all the negativity about WDW and asking if people here can suggest places to go for more positive news.

Turning this into a discussion of after hours is likely to send the thread off the rails again, which happened yesterday and resulted in several posts being removed.

I believe there is a thread specifically about after hours events.

After hours was brought in today in an apparent attempt to send the thread off the rails again, which happened yesterday and resulted in several posts being removed.

Right, that’s why I’m stopping now.

But why take offense to that? If you disagree, no problem. If I say “such and such is a waste of money,” it’s indirect and an opinion. How else should I express my opinion in a way that would be preferable? I’m genuinely asking. Why do people have to say “in my opinion?” Isn’t it already clear that it’s an opinion?

I would argue that people constantly taking it personal aren’t helping. If you don’t feel the same way, who cares what others think about how you choose to spend your
True, and I should say that I'm also aghast at the things people say on social media in general. I guess I'm more old school and try to reply in the vein of "would I say this to the person's face?". Would I tell someone staying at a deluxe they were "stupid" for doing so??

But I am getting better at using the ignore button and mostly I now try to laugh it off.

And let me say I lay no claim to perfection, lol I'm sure I've said some sparky stuff too😁

The internet seems to bring out the biggest complainers. I follow a few websites that pertain to the biggest passions of my life, Disney - specifically WDW, Springsteen and the Grateful Dead. Three institutions at this point. The one thing that is constant across all three and across many different related boards is negativity. And it’s all similar.

For example the Bruce fans constantly bash his new work and recent concerts longing for the “golden days of 1978.” Meanwhile if you took the man’s body of work in this century alone and ignored his heyday in the 70’s and 80’s it would blow away most any artists entire career. And yet the message boards are populated with fans putting him down and complaining about how it’ll “never be like the old days.”

Same with the Dead. I wasn’t there seeing them in the 1960’s or 70’s during their rise to fame but what I’ve been able to experience since the mid 1980’s has been an absolute blessing. And that includes the slower paced shows being put on by members in their 70’s and even 80’s these days. Yet, holy mackerel do the message boards paint a negative picture lamenting the years gone by.

I wasn’t at WDW in 1971. I was never on Horizons or Mr. Toad or the submarines. I didn’t even go there until this century and I’m 54 not 24. Still, the last two decades at WDW have been chock full of magical moments experienced down there for me and my family and friends and that includes a trip two months ago. But the OP has a point; you wouldn’t know that was even possible given the tone of a lot of Disney message boards.
Sorry for the long rant. Bottom line I think it’s the medium itself that tends to bring out the naysayers and it’s not just with Disney.

A little late, but a list
  • If you stick to wdwmagic, the off topic threads are always nice. The imagineering section is very pleasant too, usually the competitions have discussion threads, if you don't want to do any fan imagineering.
  • If you have a reddit account there's r/waltdisneyworld, I have found that pretty pleasant too, and much more my speed vs. discord.
  • Taking a break in between news announcements and openings is a valid option, that's what I have decided to do.. when there's a news announcment or rumor that interests me I visit here a bit, then when it becomes too chaotic I dip away. Works great for my mental health
  • Follow the right twitter accounts, don't just go for the ones that are super heavily opininated. I follow the twitter accounts of members I have recognized from here.

I would get off this forum, for a start. People have a rather scary level of dislike for Olaf statues and paintings of Disney characters in hotel rooms, too much time on their hands to sit and argue online methinks. I've never seen anywhere else with such a rabid hatred of the CEO because he dared add something into the parks they personally didn't like.
