What's your longest road trip to get to WDW?

In July we will be going from Indianapolis! About 16 hours I believe, maybe a little more than that. We usually fly, but not this time. Any suggestions on how to avoid getting completely tired out from the drive down? After all that driving I am usually too wiped out to do anything.

It is about a 20 hour drive from Lindenhurst, New York. My husband and I usually fly this ovember we will be doing a drive we are going to Jacksonville to see some family for Thanksgiveing. We will leave Nov. 18th drive to Jacksonville that day then on Monday Nov. 21st we will drive to Orlando to go to Disney for two day then back to Jacksonville for the holiday and then back home to New York. It will be a good dry run for us because we are moving to Jacksonville in the Spring of 2006. :sohappy:

If flying does counts, From Hawaii according to my Expedia print out, I think I'm at 11.5hrs flying and with the stop overs it comes to 14.5 hrs for my next trip. The last time I think my total was about 12hrs.

We drive every few years just because. Chicago to Macon, GA approx. 16 hours, rest for the night then on the road by 9-10 to arrive at hotel by 3:00 PM in the afternoon. It's fine driving until we hit Georgia. Every time you can cross off another state you feel like you're making progress, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee. But then you hit Georgia and travel on the diagnol through the whole state. It just feels like you can't get out of Georgia. Then you get to Florida and you are recharged, only a couple more hours til Disney.

we drove down when I was 7. It was my Mom Aunt and Uncle. We were going to fly but my grandmother was very sick so if need be and we had to come home earlier (which is what happened) we could drive. Though we went straight through (we had a nice conversion van to ride in) the 3 adults took turns driving and there were 4 kids. I was 7, my cousin 3 1/2, my other cousin 1 1/2 and their baby sister was 6 weeks old. It was fun but I slept most of the way :) it took us 26 hours (having to stop to eat and stuff with 4 kids can be a project)

Growing up we drove every time (never flew to Disney until I was married!), and it was a 20 hour drive each way. Well worth it though!

Now we're "only" 10 hours away so I feel like we're right next door!

It might not be to Walt Disney World, but my family once made the drive to Disneyland from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Two full days of driving with a single dad and three kids. I think my dad was a bit nuts to take us on the trip, but that is just me.

1,254 miles!

My parents drove me and my sister and brother from northeast CT in 1989.

It took about 2 and a half days. We stopped overnight in Virginia and in Georgia I think.

It would be a 20+ hour drive for us from Michigan... we have never done it... and I have to ask myself (and all of you)... why would anyone drive? Crazy! The downsides I can see are:

(1) you lose part of your vacation in travel time (2 days each way)
(2) driving great distances is so tiring!
(3) 20+ hours in the car with the kids!!!! (ours are 10, 7 & 16 mo)
(4) the savings in monetary terms can't be that much... you still have to pay for gas (at our new and improved prices), lodging and food... plus the wear and tear on the car...

I personally love leaving my house, getting on a plane and being in Florida 2+ hours later! We can fly out in the morning and have a late lunch in the Magic Kingdom!

So, enlighten me... am I missing some great American tradition by not participating in the "road trip"??? What are the positives?

I wish we could drive down in a day or two (flights are upwards of $700 Canadian a piece) but it would take us like four days nonstop (eight days driving total). As a kid though I did drive down to Disneyland a couple of times with my parents. With short hotel stops it took about three days but there were a couple of times where we drove through the night and it took one full day, one full night and just about another full day (in a small car with me and my brother duking it out in the back seat). Still, it was a fun experience but now that I'm old enough to pay for my own trips I usually spring for the flight - it is far less stressful.

The drive is PART of the vacation. We have 2 kids (16 &10) and we make stops along the way. There is so much history to be seen in our country.
We are not trying to save any money by driving and we never just go to WDW when we are in Florida, we also visit family and spend part of our vacation with them and doing other things.

Its a 2 1/2 flight from here, but we have to travel an hour and a half into NYC or NJ to get a decent flight, pay for parking and rent a car. Add to that, that my girls and I don't really do too well when flying ( :hurl: ) and it just works out better for US.

You are lucky... the drive from NY to Florida is right along that "American History" corridor... right past battle grounds, historic sites, D.C., Philly, Virginia! Actually, I'd love to do JUST that as a family vacation... the MI to Florida drive is straight south on I-75 all the way. :snore:

Don't get me wrong, I love a good driving trip as much as the next person... we even made the trek to Denver from MI (24 hours one way). However, our Disney vacation is just that, a DISNEY vacation. We only go once every couple of years, so we want to maximize our whole "Disney experience" and let the bus drivers do all the driving. :animwink:
