What's going on with the cast members and videotaping? Just got back from the world and cast members ....... me off about videotaping.

1. We went on Laugh floor and CM said FOR YOUR OWN SAFTEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No photography and/or videotaping. What's for your own saftey mean for videotaping?
2. Went on Stitch and CM shouted out to me in preshow 2, NO VIDEOTAPING. Then I heard her say, your welcome. Someone way far from me asked if she could tell me to stop videotaping! What's up with that? Who the HECK wanted me to stop (besides CM?)
3. Went on Dinosaur and NO CM told me to stop. The CM CAME ON THE LOUD SPEAKERS WHEN WE HIT THE FIRST CARNATOUROUS SHE SAID PUT THE CAMERA AWAY! Since when does a CM actually come over a loud speaker and say stop videotaping?

If any of these CMs' are recognizing me, you better give me a full apology! It's a shame that you don't stop the actual videophotographers on the websites. :(

Can anyone give me a full list of attractions that do not allow videotaping and ones that do, so that if a CM trys to stop me again I'll tell her about this!

Usually any attraction that uses screens you are not allowed to videotape. Same with new attractions (like MILF). Otherwise, it is usually up to the castmembers I think. You are not allowed to use lights on your camera, and sometimes I believe if you use the "night vision" on your camera on dark rides (even though you cannot see it), on their monitors it picks it up as if you had a flashlight shinning inside the attraction (or regular video lighting). Otherwise, be sure to ask a castmember before each attraction so you know for sure.

Again, this is all just what I've heard, so don't use it as evidence.

I guess it's so new they had to make up a reason not to spoil it for the internet comunity .. (altough sooner or later every ride and attraction is taped) .. I was kindly asked not to tape on the soarin sneak preview in 2005 .. so i did not .. I just made audio recordings :drevil:

2. Went on Stitch and CM shouted out to me in preshow 2, NO VIDEOTAPING. Then I heard her say, your welcome. Someone way far from me asked if she could tell me to stop videotaping! What's up with that? Who the HECK wanted me to stop (besides CM?)

I could tape the preshow of stitch withut a problem .. but not the mainshow .. again there was an general anouncement before the "ride" so I put my camera away .. but made a famous audio recording (it was on ITM podcast) :drevil: .. I guess that other guest was just angry he didn't bring his camera along .. so he wanted to ruin your recording too

I had no problem with my cam .. although the video was completly dark ...but the external camera mic picked up some very good .. you guessed it audio :drevil:
unless you have a huge CCD/CMOS professional shoulder cam forget taping Dinosaur it will turn out black ... and don't think about nightvision .. those IR recordings look like military footage and will irritate the security cameras

It isn't the CM's fault. Blame Disney cast protocols (specific to the attractions). If they tell you to stop filming and you don't stop, then they have the right to pull you from the attraction and/or remove you from the park in more serious cases. If the rules are stated (whether written or heard from the mouth of a CM), obey them and you will avoid such a situation... Cast members are doing their jobs and by you taking their protocols offensively, you aren't seeing the bigger picture. If you really have an issue with these rules, go to guest services and put in a complaint as I know about four workers within WDW guest services that just love hearing these kinds of stories...

As for telling a CM about the approved list of attractions that can be taped, you don't need to list them as they are trained to know... They may make mistakes but (again), to avoid any unfavorable situations, just listen to them as it makes life easier for everyone...

When did Dinosaur go no taping?

SGE and MILF are known for the rule though; anyone on these boards should know that.

There are several reasons for not videotaping including:
  • Not letting the light from your camera spoil it for other guests (dark rides especially)
  • Safety. This would especially be true for Dinosaur. You camera could easily be dropped onto the track for it could be bashed against someones head.
  • Not letting the magic get out. I know this one is a little silly as most rides already have on-ride videos and most people will only be doing it for their own collections.
I find it hard to be mad at the CM's for telling you to stop videoing. They are only doing their job and probably looking out for the safety of yourself, others and the ride.

starwood, you seem to me to be the source of the problem.
an appology, for doing their job, that is non-sense. and let me just remind everyone, it is private property, they can ask anyone to do whatever they please. if you don't like it universal would love your business.

I can totally understand why they told you no on dinosaur! The last thing I want to see on a roller coaster or fast, jerky ride is some camera flying out of your hands into my face. It's just plain dangerous and irresponsible.

Unless it has changed since December, Dinosaur shouldn't be a no-tape attraction. I was even encouraged by a cast member who gave us the Mickey Ears YOAMD prize right before we got on. And as far as bad recording, no. It's a little dark, true, but that's because a good portion of the ride is in darkness. Whenever a dinosaur appears, the video is quite good.
Here's a short list of what I've been told not to tape:
Animal Kingdom: It's Tough to be a Bug, Finding Nemo the Musical
Disney-MGM: Tower of Terror, Rock n' Rollercoaster, Millionaire (now gone), and strangely Star Tours (at Disneyland they couldn't care a bit if you tape it...I used to work on it, and I still tape it from time to time).
Epcot: Soarin', Ellen's Energy Adventure, Circle of Life, The Making of Me, Cranium Command, The American Adventure, Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and now Impressions de France (though it was okay back in 1996 and 2000).
Magic Kingdom: Stitch's Great Escape, sometimes Carousel of Progress, and it looks like Monsters, Inc. Interestingly, they don't care if you tape Mickey's Philharmagic...

From what I understood, ALL rides/shows are no taping. All attractions are no flash photography. It spoils the magic when Disneyphiles to leak all the good stuff out to the public.

On that topic, I cannot STAND flash photography on ANY ride: Splash, Pirates, SSE, Nemo. I have had words with numerous guests as we exit the ride. Not because I have any say, but because I hope everytime they look at the pictures they took on Pirates, they don't think 'Look at this sweet pic' they remember that annoying fat ***** (me) who borderline cussed them out after the ride. It ruins it for everyone else.

I was on POTC twice on Sunday. In the afternoon, as the boats were boarding, the CM on duty made an announcement that there was no flash photography on the ride. And we rode through with not one annoying flash screwing up the ride. Later that evening, we rode again and no CM made an announcement like that. Flashes going off every five seconds. I've ridden these rides hundreds of times and it still ruins it for me - what about the family on what will be their only trip to WDW?

I also cannot stand idiots taking flash pictures of the Davey Jones smoke effect on POTC. Do you know how they make Davey Jones look solid? By shining light on the smoke, it appears solid. Guess what a FLASH does to the wall of smoke? And on Nemo? A flash picture of an LCD screen? Or at the end of the ride, a flash picture against the glass of the aquarium? My fave was on SSE, when you ride through that tunnel with all the neon and fiber optic lights... a flash picture... of lights. Is there an award for stupidest WDW guest?

The rule is no videotaping, like has been said before.

It sounds like you violated that rule several times, so I really don't care how forcably the cast members had to ask you to stop.

Videotaping ruins it for other guests (the light, the camera getting in the way, you with tunnel vision stumbling around because you are looking through the camera lens...). It's a selfish thing to do on the rides and in shows and nobody owes you an apology.

Starwood -

Were you videotaping with an open LCD screen, or was the LCD screen closed and you were using the viewfinder?

It makes a world of difference, as using the LCD screen on pretty much any attraction is annoying to other guests. I've never been stopped videotaping, but then again I've never shoved it in their faces either.

My guess is you probably had your screen out, especially if they stopped the ride for it...if you are more polite in your taping you get much less problems. If I'm wrong, my apologies.

The "no videotaping" rule is only for specific attractions, as others have noted mostly those attractions that have filmed content (i.e. Soarin', Star Tours, etc.).

You are correct that ill-mannered videotaping is selfish, but someone with a small videocamera, with no external lighting and with a closed LCD screen isn't bothering anyone.

I've never had a problem using my video camera, the only place anything was said was in the Haunted Mansion (the only rides I ever taped were Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Expidetion Everest). The CM told me to keep the side screen shut, which was no problem. I understand the flashes, and night vision ruining the effects, so I'd just listen to the CM ;)
