I've always felt that one of the things that helped do Pleasure Island in, was the advent of the West Side. Because while it's possible to get from the Marketplace to the West Side (and vice versa) without going through Pleasure Island, it's not as visually interesting, kinda not as safe, and some people (walking with children) are naturally going to be attracted to the noise and music and ballyhoo (that's right, I wrote it. Ballyhoo. And I'll do it again if I have to). And once families were able to walk through, it was only a matter of time before people were allowed to bring their children INTO the clubs, turning the idea of an adults' respite from PG-rated fun into a wedding reception where nobody got married. Had Pleasure Island been MORE isolated, set back more and with better walkways twixt the other two DTD ends, it may have helped. Eh, what do I know?
What I suspect, but have no idea, is that some semblance of Pleasure Island will take root, primarily as third-party entertainment-based restaurants, cabaret, dinner theatre, standup...More family friendly than what Pleasure Island was (except for maybe AC), but with a smattering of adults-only venues, too. It won't be a pay-one-price-get-in-everywhere deal anymore. But it won't "just" be a bunch of chain restaurants, either, though I wouldn't be surprised if they were chain restaurant-sponsored, like a TGI Friday's murder mystery dinner theater, or an intimate performance venue that serves Chevy's or some such crap.
