What Should Disney do About Vaping?

For what it's worth, the limiting of vaping to designated smoking locations wasn't put in place for general health reasons, it was done for perception reasons. When someone is vaping, regardless of the health effects, it looks as though they are smoking, especially to the most impressionable demographic, children. Much in the same way Disney made a commitment to keep smoking out of their films, this was a way to keep the practice limited to areas off the beaten path. I for one would love to see smoking banned from the parks, but I can settle for the limited designated areas, as they are usually easy to avoid.

As many have pointed out, drinking is just as destructive, but there is a fundamental difference. The difference is, once the act of drinking causes someone to potentially endanger other guests, they would be kindly escorted off the premises by OCSD. The very act of smoking inherently puts other Guests as risk, yet it is allowed to continue. For that reason, I think Dismey is well justified in limiting the locations, and smokers should consider themselves fortunate to have those. No one needs to smoke to survive, it is a choice. Cars are big polluters as well, but especially in the US, they are a necessary evil. Those who choose to smoke outside designated areas, and per the park rules, this includes vapers, are breaking Disney's written policies, and should stop immediately. I don't accept excuses about there not being enough areas, it is the rule, the locations are what is provided on private property, and that should be the end of it. Everyone has the right to smoke, but they do not have the right in the Disney theme parks to do so wherever they wish. Since vaping is essentially a neutered form of smoking, it too is rightfully held to the same standard, and the rules pertaining to it should be likewise respected.
I agree... except the topic isn't smoking but vaping... I think they should have sections dedicated to those who vape & not be group with people who smoke.
Many former smokers that use vapes, do so to curve the need to smoke.

Ultimately, in the bluntest terms, that's not Disney's problem. If the issue at hand is to curtail the image of smoking, Disney's solution is sound. An extra accommodation would be appreciated, I'm sure, but I think it sets a poor precedent to make that kind of distiction.

An accommodation for smokers but not one for vape or e-cig users? Whats the big difference? Disney could go smoke free if they wanted to but they choose to accommodate instead. What they can do for one, they can surely do for the other.
I'm not saying they will, as they currently have no reason to unless various people speak up & complain about.
And I really don't see how is sets a poor precedent, as people are well aware that e-cigs & vapes are designed to be a less harmful alternative to cigarettes.

Disney could go smoke free if they chose, but would loose tons of revenue... No one has ever said "I wont go there because of designated smoking areas", but a lot of smokers (people with families), would find other areas to vacation at...

...or we'd just see a massive increase in people smoking in non-designated areas.
I can't see smokers with famlies actually avoiding the parks altogether because of an attempted smoking ban.

4) The second hand vapor, although not harmless, produces less toxicity than ciggarettes.

Q: What toxic substances are produced by vaping?

A: There are about 500 e-cigarette brands out there, and only a few have been analysed. This literature shows a great variety in the levels of the toxicants and nicotine they produce. Some of the analysed brands are known to have very low toxic emissions compared with conventional cigarettes. Some e-cigarettes have few and low levels of toxicants, but some contain levels of cancer-causing agents, such as formaldehyde, that are as high as those in some conventional cigarettes. Nevertheless, average e-cigarettes are likely to be less toxic than conventional cigarettes, although they are not without risks. Some people say these risks are very very low, but our question is “how low?” If smoking a cigarette is like jumping from the 100th floor, using an e-cigarette is certainly like jumping from a lower floor, but which floor? We don’t know.

And I believe that in my point I said that the secondhand vapor was not harmlesss, the line that they were less toxic came from the WHO report itself.

Keep in mind though that eating burnt toast can cause cancer. Not to mention there are cancer causing ingredients hidden in the coloring used in sodas.

The fact is there are cancer causing ingredients in a lot of what we ingest.

I don't think anyone here would argue that ecigs are healthy or safe, BUT they are proving as of now to be a healthier option for smokers and those exposed.

The original topic was what should Disney do about vaping and all accounts happened outside not inside. No one is suggesting they allow vaping inside which would increase exposure to secondhand vapor or force someone to be around it.

Designated areas would be outside which reduces exposure to secondhand vapor and also allows guests where to avoid if necessary to them.

The issue has been addressed, there are designated areas for those who want to smoke or inhale vapor. If a patron doesnt want to folow the rules Disney has remedies available to them as posted in their terms of service.

Very true, they already have their parameters in place. It was just suggested that disney should consider there be seperate vaping and smoking areas because they are different issues and that there be more designated areas because right now the are 4 sections throughout the entire magic kingdom.

Vapers and smokers can share the four designated areas. If they don't like breathing each other fumes they have the option of abstaining. Personally I've never had a problem controlling my nicotine urges at Disney. I'm always to busy to notice the craving.

The general impression I get from pretty much every comment is that people agree with this sentiment.

I think this hits the nail on the head. Why cant smokers abstain from smoking while at WDW? I know its an addiction but seriously, if a person is addicted to something(cigarettes, soda, anything) and you cant go a few days, let alone a few hours without having it. Don't you think it is time to get help for you addiction? I feel bad for anyone who is addicted to cigarettes, especially. But when do you take control of your life and get help?

Telling someone to just stop (even for a day) is useless.

I didn't say to suddenly stop. I said if you have an addiction that bad that you cant go a day without something then its probably a good idea to get help for it.

I am 15 years out from the day I stopped smoking. I still want one each day. I know that this addiction is not one that will allow someone to stop for even a day. Do they need to stop? Yes. But using the idea of a vacation as a reason to stop is not viable. :)

Give it time and vaping will be just like how cigarettes turned out. For decades, even with good science, reports and findings were bought and sold for profit to the manufacturers and the lobbyist to the FDA did their work greasing palms. Then suddenly, the lid gets blown off and everyone is "surprised" smoking was bad for you and caused cancer. You're breathing fire! Where's the surprise part come in?

Same goes for second hand smoke and all the damage its caused from ignoramuses. I know because I lived in an house with parents that smoked 2 packs a day EACH. When they passed a law in my state that made it against the law to smoke if children are in your car, all the smokers were outraged. To quote one enlightened father I knew "It's my kid and if I want to give him emphysema, that's my business". I kid you not.

And vaping will probably turn out the same way. Doing it public, whether inside or outside, is rude and disrespectful. Blowing smoke or mist or whatever for other people to inhale with no ability to get away is beyond rude. If you want to vape, please have at it. Just go do it somewhere only YOU can enjoy it. But then, these are the same people who think its BS they did away with smoking sections in restaurants, so there's really no intelligent conversation to be had there on the topic.

If you feel the vapor from an e cigarette is dangerous and you feel those "toxins" shouldn't be allowed in the park where people are, what are your feelings about the parking lot and the deadly vehicle exhaust you're breathing in?
