What I think...as of today...for now...

Are you serious? Dumbo is a timeless classic and one of Disney's most beloved films. Its been beloved by children for decades and even today.

And of course kids will watch a 70 year old cartoon. They'll watch any cartoons, especially good ones.

Yes, he's completely serious. Most kids today haven't seen Dumbo.

I remember the original Snow White ride scared the crap out of me when I was little. The wtich was constantly jumping out at you. And the ending was so bizarre, the witch basically kills you. What a feel good ending.

Sorry, but I refuse to believe this. Kids have always loved Dumbo. I did when I was little.

Where would today's kids see Dumbo, exactly? Unless the parents happen to have the DVD, which I doubt the average American family does, they wouldn't. Toon Disney is no more and the only animated films that Disney Channel or ABC Family play any more are Pixar films. They used to play the animated features when we were kids, but not any more. You are lucky to even see Aladdin any more. I don't remember the last time anything like The Lion King or The Little Mermaid was shown on tv. So I would guess most kids HAVEN'T seen Dumbo. I know we don't own it.

I'm sure kids know who dumbo is from the hard-cover Disney kids books we all know and love, but I doubt most kids have seen the film.

That is a very sad day if most kids today havn't seen any of the Walt era classics. Very sad indeed. :(

However, I didn't wait for Dumbo on TV. I had it on video which I watched hundreds of times. Dumbo's been released on DVD a few times.

My guess is that kids might have a vague idea who Dumbo is through his rides and short clips from the movie, but I don't think most kids have actually watched the movie from beginning to end.

No offense, but I think Disney fans tend to overrate the importance of some Disney releases to society at large. Phrases like "timeless classic," "one of Disney's most beloved films," and "beloved by children for decades and even today" to me read more like marketing copy intended to sell DVD's than real analysis of the film's significance. I'd be more persuaded by reading how many DVD's Dumbo's various releases have sold than by vague assertions of the film's timelessness.

And yes, I'm serious! :)

>>>tells a story>>>

Well David S. should be happy then... but probably not. :)

Only if it tells the same story that's in the existing ride, and does it as well, (or better) with the same story elements, including the Happily Ever After Scene.

If it doesn't tell the same story, and just focuses on the Dwarfs, IMO they should keep both rides.

But since Lee said there is a chance that Snow White's current ride will also stay, I'm not going to let myself get disapointed until if/when Disney OFFICIALLY announces SWSA is closing. Likewise, I won't let myself get a false sense of relief about the possibility of it staying, either. I'm in a neutral, "wait and see" mode right now, which is probably the best course of action.

Yeah I have to agree with this. I highly doubt most families have the DVD (I don't even think my family does, maybe the VHS) and you most likely won't find it on TV.

I'm only 22 and I saw it when I was very young and haven't since unfortunately. However if I do have children I will make sure they see the classics.

Maybe it's just the Disney Geeks in my wife and I, but our daughters have seen all the classics and we own the on VHS or DVD. In fact Dumbo is one of my eight-year-old daughter's personal favorite movies.

But the general population? Yeah I thinks films like Dumbo are known by name only...if that.

Well, lets see how the 2011 stunningly restored DVD and BD do in sales before making that assumption!

And earlier editions of the film on home video, including the first two DVDs, have sold well, so someone must be watching it!

Since everyone seems to be throwing in their own pieces of anecdotal evidence at this point...I'm not sure I've ever seen Dumbo in its entirety. I have a very vague memory of seeing "Baby Mine" and "Pink Elephants on Parade" at my grandparents' when I was a kid, so we might have been watching the movie on TV.

Also I want to be clear that I'm not saying kids today wouldn't like Dumbo. I just don't think they have much of a chance to see it, because I don't think the movie has penetrated as deeply into the popular consciousness as some people seem to. (Just saying it's released on DVD a lot doesn't tell us much without knowing how well those discs sell. I've never personally gotten the impression that it was a "hot" seller.)

Until someone can produce some sales numbers, it really comes down to opinion, but at least I'm not alone in mine.

Oh I'm sure it's being introduced to new audiences, however I think a lot of the sells can also be attributed to Disney film collector "completists" who simply want to have the entire library in its most current incarnation of media.

It has taken on a mythological status as a classic. To be revered, but without everyone completely understanding the phenomenon....

Well according to some sales numbers I just looked up it's sold in the range of 2,817,781 dvd units. Just to give a real number to things.

That's what I think. Almost everything Walt touched seems to be hallowed by fans today. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but I try to take off my "fan glasses" in discussions like this.

I don't believe the film was much of a success in its initial release. (Not necessarily its own fault, since the war in Europe really hurt the Disney releases in the late '30s and early '40s, but still...) Since then I know it has done better, but enough that it's now a rite of passage for most kids? I just don't see it.

That is helpful. Just by way of comparison, this chart says The Incredibles has sold 15.6 million DVD's. That makes me think if you want to know what today's kids associate with Disney, you're better off looking at Pixar than Dumbo.

By the way, none of this means I think it's a bad idea to build a theme park area around Dumbo. I've never liked the idea of trying to get the "hottest property" into the parks at the expense of everything else. Some of Disney's best attractions have come from films that didn't necessarily do that well...or from ideas that were never films at all!

Well, definitely more current releases from Pixar, plus isn't Dumbo one of the films that is only released from the vault on occassion? Or is it always on the shelves?

The Disney channel used to show movie song clips/montages in between shows instead of a lot of the filler you get today (ads for dvd sales, new cartoon shorts, edited mickey cartoons, etc.)

Now why would Prince Charming and Cinderella be some dumb as to build their chateau on such a terrible foundation?

It's a cool idea that would have both attractions but I can imagine the story behind that one would be awesomely hilarious! :p

It appears that they may share the same building as HoP and PPF does and be seperate attractions/places. But they would share the same FF folklore backstory. Could they possibly be considering 2 levels for this complex? One at utilidor level (dark ride) and one at the MK level (chateau). If so, it would explain going back to the drawing board. I think I would even settle for circus-land if this is what they are doing but only if circusville is only a temporary placeholder. A 2 story complex of the area seen in the artwork would be beyond amazing. We are talking potential potter swatter stuff here folks. :)

Revenge of the Mummy at Universal?

If you are asking if that is the level of intensity any new attraction in the FLE will have. Probably not. Perhaps the MI coaster's budget is now being given to the MK to create this new attraction and then DHS will get a mummyesque like ride in a few years. I'd be fine with that!

I know this will never happen but how cool would it be if the new SW mine cart ride also housed an updated version of SWSA?

If this rumor is true than it makes SWSA hopelessly redundent. And it makes the rumor of it closing make more sense. It will get a new attraction eventually. The temp princess m&g rumors make sense now. It all makes sense. But I'm staying in the rumors forum until it soft opens. Cause you never know
