What happened to pretty Spaceship Earth?

Nice dream, but untrue. It happened all the time in the 80's. It might or might not have gotten fixed quicker in the 80's, but amazingly things still went wrong. Shocking I know, but it even rained during parades. This all started as a conversation about something on the top of SSE. As far as I can tell, we only have speculation about what it was or where it came from. We have, however, had eye witness indications that it wasn't there before said date and wasn't there after (gone now). Key words...realistic expectations!

Not a dream a reality. Their maintenance was second to none to any other amusement or theme parks. There was little bad show. And I speak of the weeks to months long bad show that is common place today. Back then light bulbs did not remain burned out more than a day. The paint was always fresh. The attractions never had malfunctioning AAs.

I always hated the rain that cancelled the parades, made the lines longer at attractions;)

The question of what happened to Spaceship Earth.
Did something happen to Spaceship Earth? What? Did it get struck by lightning or were there bunches of birds or birds with diarrhea or was it a power wash epic fail? (this is fun isn't it) Did they fix the boo - boo or is it still hemorrhaging?

P.S. Sorry I must be on the verge of terminal boredom tonight.o_O

The third shift cuts are flat out stupid.

Third Shift custodial CMs work in very dangerous safety conditions. They have to perform their tasks using corrosive chemicals, work in very dark locations, work with very dangerous equipment and machines and even 200' up on high reaches and repelling from buildings. What is their wage premium for all of this? Nothing. Disney pays them the same wage as the day shift custodial CMs in the park that stand around and trade pins with guests all day (except for an extra $1/hr for working during the night). Disney simply refuses to pay more for these high safety risk workers and Disney will always get away with it and it's a shame. So the "care factor" in those CMs can easily be understood.

Exactly Raven. What I was trying to say is that cutting staff on the third shift is insane. They are the ones who maintain everything. And I agree with you about pay. I have been in that position before, and feel like it with my current job.

Disney doesn't appreciate those that work behind the scenes much at all and probably never will. All focus is in areas where guests are. They make a HUGE effort t show outward appreciation for the CPs (even though the CPs don't realize it until they are hired into the company beyond their program and expect it to be the same but it isn't).

Wow, I didn't realize this. Thanks for bringing this to light.

So a question -- how do people end up on third shift? Are they just put there? Do some people request it? Wouldn't most folks prefer day shifts? Just wondering how it all works, considering the very small differential.

The places I used to work, 3rd shift was voluntary. Other places hire people into it. It can be a rough shift unless you are an insomniac, and others just love it.

Can anyone take their time machine back to the 80's and show me valid proof Spaceship Earth was always operating in optimal performance everyday?

In fact while they are at it prove to me all of WDW was optimal as people soooooo like to pretend.

Jimmy Thick- Someone just has to have a time machine, how can people see these unproven facts so clearly?
People often forget one thing. Both the doom&gloom and the pixie dust brigades. That is that in 1983 EPCOT was brand new and everything else in WDW just over a decade old.

Through that fact alone, WDW was in a far better shape back then than it is now. Everything worked because it was new, and what didn't work could be quickly fixed.
