What Happened to Discovery Island?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has a clue what happened or if something is going to happen to Discovery Island? I use to go to that place all the time as a kid and wish Disney would do something with that land, preferably not another resort. Anyone know? As a bonus any news on what happened or will happen to River Country?

I know at one point there was a rumor that Discovery Island would become Myst Island, based on the classic PC game. I hated the game because I hate puzzles, but I do admit that would have been a cool concept.

I am watching 'Life After People' on the History Channel right now.

That kinda sums up both Discovery Island and River Country.

It'll never happen, but I thought it would be cool for them to turn it into the LOST island.

Wasnt there a thread or an article a while back where someone had taken pictures of the island... or am I thinking River Country...

/edit: sorry, yeah, I was thinking river country. http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=261052

I thought of that. That would be really cool, but the problem is if it were to be popular, they would have to get it done and opened before the show ends, which is only in 1 or 2 seasons I believe. Therefore they really wouldn't have time to get it done.

2 summers ago we went on a fireworks cruise, and our driver told us that they took all the animals on Discovery Island once AK opened because there are obviously animals there too. She also told us this creepy ghost story about the island. anyone ever heard it? She said all Discovery Island is now is a bird sanctuary

There was no need for it when DAK opened and its wasnt rethemed because its another example of wasted space in WDW like 20K, WOL, RC, half of DHS, abandoned pop wing...

When Discovery Island was open, it was a logistical and environmental nightmare. I forget the specifics, perhaps someone out there can provide greater detail, but I remember that they had HUGE problems with pest control on that island, from birds, insects, snakes ... they couldn't seem to keep the pests away from guests or cast members. This pest problem was an enormous factor in the island's demise.

Actually, Disney got itself into a whole lot of hot water as employees working the island were killing the native birds that they perceived as pests.

These days, those same native birds swarm AK such as the snowy ibis around the Oasis flamingo exhibit and the flame tree barbecue seating area as well as the vultures in and around the hippo exhibit on the safari. Disney smartly just looks the other way and works around the issue.

If I'm not mistaken, the electric fences got shut down, and the velociraptors and the two T-Rex ate some people or something...

It would be great to see them do something with river country. I went there as a kid and loved it. Obviously the lake water is an issue, so some changes would need to be made. Still it would be great to have it reopen

The deserted River Country pics were quite sad. The place seems to be still standing and probably usable with a little work done. They need to either bring it back or build something new there...

Unfortunately, the original design used water from Bay Lake, which has been found to have a deadly amoeba in it (all Florida fresh water does). They would need to rework the design quite a bit to make the park usable again.
