What ever happened to Flamingo Crossing?

Yup - Flamingo Crossing still dead...film at 11 :).

Could the reason that it is dead be becasue it is on the opposite side of the WDW property that most people would like to be lodging in. I find that more people I know that dont stay on Disney property want to be between WDW and Universal Orlando. Flamingo Crossing would be way out of their way if they wanted to drive to Universal, right? Are there other reasons why it may be dead?

There are accommodations just south of Flamingo Crossing at US 192. I quite enjoy staying at Orlange Lake, whose property borders Walt Disney World immediate south of the area in question, and find getting around to other attractions be just fine.

I think, just like Pleasure Island, not many want to pay Disney's price.

Walgreens filed for permits in FC a year ago. "The project includes the development of 1.53 acres site to construct a Walgreens store and the associated parking lot. The existing site is a mass graded site as part of the overall development called Flamingo Crossing within the Reedy Creek Improvment District (Orange County)."

I sincerely hope this project stays dead.
A bad idea....just bad....
What was that thing about Walt not wanting unrelated clutter surrounding his Park...?
Well to be fair, while FC is technically "on property", it doesn't appear as on property, and it is very much out of the way of everything. Sure, its right off of a (toll road) 429 exit, but hardly anyone uses 429. Other than that, its a good couple mine drive on the Western Way road from Coronado Springs, or driving through many miles of nothing from Avalon road. I can't really figure out why they thought this would be prime retail location, but what do I know?

@Tom Morrow, now that you say it, I think being on a toll road might an even bigger negative to potential businesses. This is aimed at the offsite crowd but effectively traps them on Disney property. There is a toll between Flamingo Crossing and US 192.

I was under the impression that FC was to be aimed at resort guests and would have bus transportation like DTD. Still, The main access from WDW property to FC would be on Western Way, the road adjacent to Coronado Springs. Coronado Springs is already kind of in a corner of WDW, and its a 3.5 mile drive from Coronado to FC: http://goo.gl/maps/TSpF7. So even for being an "on property" shopping center, the location is far from ideal.

Everything official and from "insiders" suggested this would be like Crossroads was--legally on Disney property but "outside the Mickey gate." Therefore, very unlikely there would have been any bus transportation. Why would resort guests want a bus to visit a Walgreens and a Comfort Inn?

This was a misguided attempt to compete with 192 with some generic third party venues, I don't know why the online fan community wants it to be something more.

In the case of Walgreens, with bus service, it would further kill the need to ever have to leave property, like for if you needed your prescriptions, for example.

I for one am glad this project is apparently dead, I didn't think it was a good idea in the first place. But its both funny and sad to see the infrastructure in place, all for nothing.

My favorite thing about FC is that it is right beside WDW horticulture division. On a nice hot day the smell of "natural fertilizer" is overwhelming.

Here is the reality people, Flaming Crossings will be developed one day. The chases of a development in that prime of a location that already has the infrastructure (road, power, drainage, etc) installed sitting forever is pretty slim. It won't be tomorrow, it might not be for another decade, but who would you rater develop the property? Disney or some company that has zero concern about theme, sight lines, etc.

The distance from either property isn't that much of a drawback, people are usually on long shuttle rides anyway.

The main reason why nothing is being done at FC is because it was a poor plan in the beginning.
