What’s next for Animal Kingdom?

Last time I went I felt it could honestly use a few more animals. I felt like it had declined in that seemingly important aspect quite a bit since say 2013.

With them being dead set on IP integration, feels like turning Dinoland into Oceania would make the most sense, if they want to keep the Nemo musical around.

My question is, not if they will, but could they add another land where Rafiki's is and north of Kali?
The ultimate build out plan - post Tiger River - was to enable foot traffic to get to the Planet Watch area. With plenty to do on the way.

I assume they never had any plans of shutting down Rafiki's because of the veterinary facilities (even if it was closed to guests)? Seems like it would be a tremendous undertaking to move all of that while still keeping it close to where all the safari animals are kept.

Not that I’m aware of (which isn’t nearly everything)

Personally, I would love to see Animal Kingdom add another thrill ride to their line up. Growing up, MGM Studios (now DHS) was always known as Disney's thrill park, just like IOA was for Universal. After losing Dueling Dragons and opening up Hagrids in it's place, IOA was losing it's thrill factor but it seems like the new Jurassic Park coaster will rectify that. Disney hasn't really added anything "thrilling" for some time. It appears Epcot and Magic Kingdom will get their new thrill rides with Guardians and Tron... but as coasters go, Animal Kingdom still only has Everest.

I think Flight of Passage counts as a thrill ride. It seems like Disney has done a good job of putting thrills into every park so that they lose that reputation of being only for kids that was never really true. I do remember though when I was a CM working the wait time monitor at Epcot that we had a couple people a day ask where the rollercoaster was at and we're pretty upset when we told them that Epcot didn't have one. I should've sent them to Living with the Land.

Would anyone really care if they replaced Rafiki’s Planet Watch? I’ve never been over there myself because it seems like a waste of time.

I’d rather have something new altogether than a Pandora expansion personally, although I’d be happy with any major additions to this park. I do question how much hype there would be for a Pandora expansion given how a lot of people aren’t that impressed with what’s there now. And of course something needs to be done with DinoLand, though I couldn’t tell you how. I like Dinosaur, but the rest of the land is pretty disposable. Roadside attraction is just not a good theme.

Yeti fix?
Too soon. 🤣

I don't know why, but any what-if threads about AK always devolve into Dinoland bashing. A few things...
  • Dinoland in general is not a bad theme. It just wasn't executed very well.
  • There's too much space-filling crap there. It'd be great to rip out a couple of small attractions and add one nicer one. Another immersive dark ride would be GREAT, but I'd take a larger coaster. Instead of Primeval Whirl and the bone digging thing. Why not combined these areas for a single better dino-attraction!
  • Dinosaur is one of the better rides in AK. Why is it that this one is always suggested for the chopping block on these boards? I hate when they rip out or "minus" good attractions: Soarin was minus-ed, Test Track was minus-ed, Alien Encounter was minus-ed then ripped out, GMR... gone, Backlot Tour... gone. Can't we keep a few of these better attractions? Btw, I know not everyone likes all or any of these rides. JMO

I don’t really see people saying Dinosaur should go so much as people saying that it’s the only worthwhile thing in the land. That’s certainly how I feel about it.

Animal Kingdom has to be more than just a zoo, right? Including a land based on Dinosaurs and a (deleted) land based on mythic creatures are things that elevate it beyond a zoo no matter how you feel about the execution. Beyond IP integration, what else can this park do to make the experience much more than animal encounters? (and I do applaud a good narrative about conservancy, but most zoos i have been to spend a lot of time in this arena as well (and as well they should).

I like Rafiki's, especially now that they have the animation academy over there. There's also a petting zoo for kids. Beyond that, though, it's just a peaceful place to go and get away from the crowds. Relaxing little train ride there and back and it's not busy.

Regardless, they almost certainly won't replace it because it's where all the veterinary facilities are. I think it's more likely it would just be closed to visitors and be a backstage area for the vets/animal care than have it torn down and replaced with anything else.

Build more elaborately themed areas/rides like Expedition Everest.

Hopefully get rid of Dino-Rama....

Get rid of UP! A Great Big Bird Adventure starring Thematically Inappropriate Russell and his Dog, and change it back to the original Flights of Wonder.

I guess it might be a bit redundant for most of us, but I would love to see a land based on North America. I love the Rocky Mountain wilderness of the US and Canada. Probably not as diverse fauna as Africa or Asia, but you could have grizzly bears, wolves, moose, bald eagles...

Alas, I don’t see any of that happening anytime soon. Chances were slim BEFORE coronavirus. Now... 🤷‍♂️

All in all, it’s still the best theme park in Orlando. My complaints are rather minimal.
